Is My Dealer Lying?

Just dropped the Wrangler off at the dealer to have an axle leak taken care of. The parts guy asked me if there was anything else they could look at while they had the Jeep there.

I recently swapped out the stock tires for DuraTracs and had been getting the TPMS dash warning for the last month. So, I asked the guy if he could reset the TPMS threshold from 35PSI to 30PSI, so the error light would go away.

He told me that he was not allowed to do it. He told me that Chrysler set the PSI threshold to 35PSI - and that is where it needed to stay forever - regardless of whether or not the stock tires were on there.

I, of course, know I can buy an AEV ProCal module and change the setting myself, but I have also read multiple threads on this site that indicated that the dealer could and WOULD make this change if asked.

Does anyone know the straight story? Has anyone had their dealership make this TPMS change for them?

It's no different than certain dealers being "mod" friendly so it's a ymmv situation. Spend $150 for a Procal and diy. This way you can recal the speedo for larger tires as well.

There are even some tire shops that are reluctant to do it.

Buy a Procal.

He can, he just won't.

Usually the "middle of the line" answer I've always heard is that they're willing to recal within the limits of what's stock on Wranglers, meaning that they'd be willing to set your PSI for any of the numbers that could come stock depending on what stock tires/wheels you have.

I'd view this as a red-flag about "mod friendliness" and consider moving on.

For a Repair facility there are other factors. Tire pressures are now kinda regulated by the government. The green house gas bill HR 2454 includes a portion that says any time a vehicle is brought to a repair facility tire pressures must be set to factory specs, so there is liability issues if they change the tpms settings.

Yup. Except the retards who wrote the legislation don't know jack about cars, and don't realize tire specs are for the TIRE and its load, not the vehicle.

I haven't heard back from the dealer yet. They still have the Jeep. I half expect them to try to say the tires caused the axle leak.

Personally, I don't know if there's any merit to that. The leak did, in fact, start about two to three weeks after getting the DuraTracs mounted. However, in my research, I found multiple Jeep owners with the same problem - with stock tires.

I don't know, as a military retiree and someone who had lived a number of years in Europe and Asia, the U.S.is still a pretty awesome place to live. Perhaps the older one gets the more one's perspective changes. Well that and shrinking frontal lobes ;?)-)

How do you tell isf the dealer is lying? If his lips are moving he is lying. Although in this case the dealer is right. Liability wise it would be a bad move to lower the pressure below what they have determined to be the ideal.

I like this response!

From the dealer's point of view, lowering the pressure creates liability issues without much of a profit up front. It is simply easier to say "do it yourself," then risk litigation.

I agree Bob......I'm compairing it to what THIS Country was. I too have lived around the world and served in many places I would never want to live in.......but this country WAS a far far better one, once upon a time. Just venting my sadness that so many of our young (like my kids) never lived when you didn;t keep a gun and lock all your doors, or have people getting everything they need for not working.....sorry for the rant. I'll get another cup of coffee. (Thanks for your service too)

The dealer runs a business. Shouldn't the dealer get to run the business how he chooses, or would you prefer the government step in and tell him how to run it?

The "hippies" are the ones pissed at the dealer for running a business as he sees fit.

FWIW I got my Black Rocks and Duratracs from the dealer because they price matched and bought the old tires and rims back from me. While I was surfing WF and drinking coffee the service writer came by and said would 35psi be ok in the new tires so I wouldn't have to worry about the TPMS light coming on. I said "put 30 psi in them, I've got a Procal". So 30 psi it was.

No. A deposit is a contract. A deposit on an order is an even stronger contract. The dealer then sold the car that was supposed to go to the OP. Hell, with a decent lawyer, he can get the dealership to pay for the plane ticket, AND a rental car until the new truck arrives. What if the OP sold a car expecting the Jeep on its delivery date? The dealer can run his shop anyway he likes, but he cannot violate contracts, which a deposit is.

I dont believe the dealer was lying to be honest. The guys down here can not adjust the TPMS level, its just not an option on their screen. Likewise, they can adjust the speedo and auto tranny calibrations for different tyre sizes and diff ratios, but the only options available to them are all the factory options. ie, they can not select 35in tyres or 4.88 diff ratios, even though we know the procal is more than capable of doing this.

Allow me to bitch a moment...

Timeline with my local dealer....

Saturday, March 10th... I noticed my first leak under the Jeep. I came to this forum - where you guys correctly diagnosed my axle leak.

Monday, March 12th... I called my dealer at 8:30AM to report the axle leak. They were booked all week and told me to drop the vehicle off on Friday, 3/16.

Friday, March 16th... After keeping the vehicle for approximately four hours, the dealer calls to tell me that I have an axle leak, but they don't have the part in stock. I reminded the guy of how I called four days prior to report my axle leak. I never received a suitable answer for why they didn't have an axle seal in stock. The guy told me they would call me just as soon as the part came in.

Thursday, March 22nd... After not hearing back from the dealer all week, I called them this morning. I was told that the part arrived on Tuesday, March 20th, but they forgot to call me. Unfortunately, they're so busy in Service, the dealer won't be able to get me in until Friday, March 30th!!!!

So, to recap... I call my dealer on 3/12 to report a leaking axle seal. It will be repaired on 3/30. Do the math.

Meanwhile, I don't feel comfortable driving the vehicle more than five to ten miles at a time. I'm extremely lucky to work from home, because otherwise, I would be looking at three weeks of car rentals.

Why isn't anything easy? I could have this fixed today at another garage in town - but I would have to pay out of pocket. My JK has 8,500 miles on it, and a factory seal is leaking. I don't expect them to drop everything to fix it, but to have to wait from 3/12 to 3/30 to replace an axle seal? Come on!

Oh, I also forgot the dealer tells me they will need my vehicle ALL DAY on 3/30 to replace the seal. The guys in this thread tell me that it is a one hour repair. My dealer needs the vehicle from 7AM to 5PM to fix it. WTF?!

To rub salt in the wound, weather here in Indiana has been in the 70's and 80's for the last two weeks. Perfect topless weather - unless your Jeep is parked in your garage the whole time...

Remember too that ANY licensed Jeep dealer can do warranty work. Have you looked for others in your area? Doesn't sound like these guys are too keen on getting warranty stuff done.

Since it's still under warranty, I want the dealer to make it right. Plus, with my mechanical skills, I might do more harm than good .

I'm in Muncie - about 25 miles from other dealers in Anderson and New Castle. The logistics of getting to these locations - and waiting all day for my vehicle rule that option out. I'm less than 10 minutes from my local dealer - and at least they offer a shuttle service, so I can get some work done at home while I'm waiting on the Jeep.
