Is...The Top Comes Off...reason enough

I have to be honest,

I want an unltd! I also really like the FJs. But I wan't to take the Tops and the Doors off. And the more I read...the more I see that out of everything that this is one of the biggest factors for a lot of people. Just through reading this forum and even the FJ forum I see a lot of "What other 4x4 vehicle can you take the top off of...and THE Doors" comments.

So besides the ultimate off roading abilities(which who knows if I will ever use) of the wrangler...IS taking the tops and doors off reason enough to want one.

Hell even on the FJ forums people say they love the FJ...but the "Convertibleness" of the wrangler is a lot of fun and can't be beat

So is it reason enough...I am starting to think yes

" I am starting to think yes "

You Answered your own question....
Once you take the top off you'll never look back.
IMHO.

Yes! I used to have a 1974 Land Cruiser. It had the hard top, soft top and a bra! Jeeps are way better now.

Tons of reasons to get a Wrangler over an FJ.

I have driven an FJ and it sucks compared to the wrangler. Regardless of the top.

I had long admired Land Cruisers & Toyota pick ups as they have incredible virtues.

After looking long & hard at the pros & cons of each FJ/Wrangler tech sheet nuance.....I went & drove them.

Whatever else the FJ was....IMHO it was BORING in each and every test drive I took.

Now after 15 months and 21,000 miles on my Wrangler.....it makes me grin EVERY time I drive it.

And that's WITH the top & doors on. We still have hard frost, cold rain and even 4" of snow in the past week.

So I'll continue grinning with the various body panels in place for a while.....just WAITING to take the top off.....

I've told this story on another thread, but I will share it again since it seems appropriate here. I'm in sales so I drive my Wrangler all the time. All summer the top is down and the doors are off. Some from out HQ was in town and wanted to ride with one of the reps so I volunteered. I didn't warn him and showed up at his hotel in the morning. He kind of looked and gave an "oh well" shrug and got in. After 3 or 4 stops we had to drive a little to the next one. It was a beautiful day. He turned and said, "This doesn't really seem like work, does it?"

I did everything I could not to choose the Unlimited. Compared it to a number of the other vehicles. Always came back to the same thing, they cost more and you get less. There is only 1, 4 door convertible sold in the US, and it is the Wrangler Unlimited. Too much fun to every buy anything else.

On a similar note, back when I was still in Santa Barbara, I had to pick up my boss from a body shop where he'd left his relatively new $90k Jaguar XK8 after a minor fender bender. I felt some trepidation as he climbed into my shitty, topless, $5k, 150,000 mile YJ, for the five mile trip back down the 101 to the office. After a mile or so on the freeway (obviously we're having zero conversation without the top), I look over at him and with his hair flappin' all over the place he just yelled, "AWESOME!!"

I own a JKU and my hubby owns a FJ ( A.K.A. Fake Jeep) I don't like the FJ for more reasons than just the doors and roof. It's VERY VERY claustrophobic!
The back doors are a total pain to open needing to open the front doors first. This is a pain when you have people in the back.

Also not being able to roll the windows down on the back.

The back windows are like airplane windows. Myself, our son and others have become sick riding in the back. Not only are they tiny and not able to be rolled down they sit further up than your seat so you have no view.

I can BARELY find fun things to buy to mod for it like my Jeep.

I do however LIKE his rubber floors. .. HA!

I throw my top back almost everyday and I have never enjoyed a vehicle more. it's so great having the ability to do that and it convinced me I'll probably always own at least one vehicle with the ability to throw the top back

A sunroof can't even compare. You look back and up, and your entire roof is gone! I love it.

Well, I figured the responses would be pretty positive...but damn. I have to get one...every time one drives by me I break my neck to look at it. I even park next to them so It doesn't look too odd when I walk around them a couple of times(which is hard work for me...broke my leg 8 months ago in 8 different places during an accident in an 81 Vette) ....Gotta get one

I'll be hanging around...I've been using the search a lot...and already have plans...damnit I have even bought the thing yet!!!!!!

I know it is not the same.......about 30 years ago I was in 3 motorcycle wrecks in 2 years...none my fault. My mother comes to the hospital and extracts the promise, no more bikes until she is gone..she can't take "that call anymore". I agree. Missed the in the wind feeling. Got a Jeep in '94, got another in '04.

Mom died about 18 months ago, thought about a bike, bought another Wrangler '12 this time. Thanks mom always did like the Jeep.

I can't even imagine driving an FJ as my fun car! There's nothing fun about it! It's completely claustrophobic. The Wrangler is the opposite of that! Open air, freedom!
