Is this lift really crap?

So I'm planning to buy a lift for my 2015 JKU. So I was looking at lifts that are within my budget and had found the rough country 4" X series JK lift (especially considering the lifetime warranty). I started looking for some reviews and saw that some reviews for four years old they were concerning the TJ. I read the reviews that the shocks are crap and I'm already thinking I'll replace those with with some Bilsteins to give me a better ride. I wanted to know if anyone has had any experience with this lift or is it really crap like some of the older reviews have stated.

Are there any other areas that I should think about replacing the rough country lift or should I just avoid the rough country lift all together?

Thanks guys.

what she said above....I'm still shopping for a lift and yes I looked at RC and did my research. There are too many negative reviews on RC Lifts, yes some will chime in and say how good theirs is. I think you answered your last question.

Additional to what was stated above, be sure you're buying shocks for the intended use. Just because you spend big bucks on a set of shocks doesn't mean they are going to give you a smooth or comfortable ride. Research is your friend.

I am the ONE person on here that has a RC lift, the 3.5" Series II, that actually likes it. Are there better lifts out there? Sure, but better is a subjective term and the lift I have included everything needed for the install. The ride is very smooth, it tracks straight going down the road and the shocks are actually softer than the RE mono-tubes(re-branded 5100's) on my previous JK. Going on 8 months since I installed it and not one issue with the lift.

I hope WatchThis! doesn't read this thread! :hide:

On the forums people hate Rough Country. I believe it is due to an issue Rough Country had years ago and the negative opinion stuck.

I know many people that have RC lifts and they have no issues. Some of these people include the service manager at my dealership and a few techs that I know. If you like it and it is in your price range go for it.

You get what you pay for. My dream lift is an AEV Dual Sport. After wheeling one of those for a weekend, I am sold.

i have the 3.5" on mine and honestly have not had any issues. It was a dealer installed kit and they did a decent job, so it actually rides pretty well, and I have had no issues off-road to this point.

That said, knowing what I know now(total newb when I bought it and not much better yet) I would have done something different. I really hate to cheap out on anything.

I will continue to use it and will end up changing out parts as I go over time. I have other priorities at this point. It doesn't bug me so much that I feel I have to swap it out.

I get decent flex with it.... :)

Damn it, he read the thread...............Would the expensive equipment come with a guarantee that it wouldn't fail? I really hope so, because I would hate to have spent all that money for high end equipment and be free falling to my death. That was sarcasm.

I have the lift youre looking at and its been on for about 2.5 years and 30K miles. Ive seen trails, mud, water, mountains, sand and rocks and havent had a single issue. I know it gets a bad rap. I'll admit i did NOT do my research and went off one person in my club who said "hey, buy this lift and we can install together."

like i said, 2.5 years later and im still very, very pleased with everything its seen. Go with what makes you comfortable.

Honestly there is nothing wrong with RC, I had the 2.5 shocks and springs lift. I even added their front track bar, quick discos, and their steering stabilizer set up. Recently had the opportunity to switch out to RK and the RS9000XL adjustable Rancho shocks, huge difference in ride quality. Go within your means. If you want a budget lift, go with a Budged Boost while you make up your mind on a quality lift and give yourself time to rack up some dough.

This sums it up pretty nicely. Many say they are happy with their RC, and who is anyone else to tell someone they're not happy, when they say they are??

But...I think what happens most often is that the happy one hasn't yet tried the other stuff, and when they do they notice a considerable improvement like above.

Maybe the OP can go wheeling with someone who has the lift he's looking at, and then in a differently configured rig. It'd be worth the time to experience the differences first-hand.

It'd kind of be like me saying, hey Joe Blow...I have a RK lift, I like it a lot...therefore MC (or just insert whoever else) isn't any better. Now...if I've never had anything but that one RK lift, how the heck would I know if something else was better, or worse?

I've got the RC 2.5" Series II and am very happy with it. The kit comes complete with everything you need. For a budget boost, I would buy this again. As far as their spring lifts, maybe I would look at another brand when the time comes to upgrade. It comes down to what you want to do with your rig and how much you have in your wallet.

4" seems like overkill unless you're into some heavy duty off-roading. In that case you will need far more money than just for the lift. I would not skimp on the lift. The suspension is one of the critical items if not done right will just bring a lot of headaches down the line.

Same point I was trying to make. Rather than spending the money on a 4in lift and having to go with a lower cost/poor performing lift and 4in is really not justified other than for look reasons, then I feel he would be better off budgeting the same amount of money and putting it towards a higher quality 2-3in lift.

I'm currently budgeting about $1K for my lift with the intent to fit 35's. I've decided the Mopar 2in lift is a good value for what I'm looking for in a lift since it actually provides 2.5-3in of lift and will allow fitment of up to 35's. I can get the Mopar 2in lift for $760, which leaves me some room in my $1K budget for Wheel spacer adapters if needed and improved Geo correction parts.

The RC 4in lift is a $500 price range lift which is right around the same price range as the Rubicon Express 2.5in lift.
Where is this 760 MOPAR lift you are talking about?

Great choice for that "Look at me appeal.":D What are those 33's? Just think of the additional looks that could be have if you put some 37's under there instead of that 10 in's of unnecessary fender clearance!!! ;)
Rednroll, don't know why this was needed but what lift do you have on your Jeep?

Btw guys I wasn't going to go with the 500.00 lift, I was going with their 1200.00 lift (link below) that I thought looked pretty complete and 1200 isn't a cheap lift to me but when you compare it against 3K/4k kits, I guess it's about perspective when it comes to cheap lifts. The reason that I want to go with the 4" lift is because it also gives me the opportunity to go to 37's in the future (like a lot of people have done start with 35's and move on to 37's).

I was also planning to upgrade to an adjustable track bar & dual steering stabilizer kit.

rednroll,

They are 35x12.50R17 Fierce Attitudes, and I don't have any need for a 37" tire. The Jeep is my daily driver and only sees a few off-road trips per year. Did I miss the lift that you have on your Jeep? Next time I do a mod, I will make sure to consult you and get your opinion. You can "look at me" all you want, hope you enjoy the view of my :mooning:

I am not an RC fan... In fact, the RC 3.25 is possibly the worst lift kit in history for a Wrangler. Their 2.5 spring lift SUCKS and the 4" are crap. Tons of posts here on WF with craptastic results.

That said, they have 2 products that get a little better press. The 2.5 Series II budget boost is actually a decent little budget boost and with the right shocks, caster correction and bump stops, I would run it on a mild trail Jeep.

The other is the 3.5 Series II which is pretty complete. There is a little question of quality on the bushings in the control arms, but at least it addresses caster, etc. I would buy a drag link flip like the Yeti instead of installing the drop Pitman arm, but that lift has better riding shocks and at least a few here have some experience with it.

If you just have to buy RC, buy the 3.5 Series II.

Personally I'd recommend the 3.5" over the 4", but what are we talking about? If you put an RC lift on your jeep I heard it will instantly burst into flames, roll down a hill, and crash into the local orphanage rendering all of those poor children now homeless. Think about the children man!!

Sarcasm aside - I run the 3.5" RC and am fine with it. I know I'm evil for burning down orphanages, but...
