Hey all,

I'm looking into getting my first wrangler and came across this beauty at the local dealership. It's a new 14 that was taken to a local off road shop for a lift kit (can't remember the name), 35" tires and wheels, xrc front and rear bumpers, and side steps/armor. All in all the dealer said the package costs them 7800 so theres that. I talked them down to 38k for the car and all of the modifications are covered under the factory warranty. Am I getting ripped off here? I'm not looking to do any crazy off roading, just exploring trails, camping, hunting, etc. I was drawn to this one because I feel like the JK needs a lift, bigger tires, and different bumpers to look mean. I have the car ready for me to pick up tomorrow, but I just want to make sure I'm not making a huge mistake.

I cannot stress this enough, if this is what you want then get it. Don't skip out on a dream.

However

Its been a pretty well known fact, Dealer Lifts are installed and aimed at the mall crawler crowd. No one will pay the dealer to install, too expensive. Also, any work you have done at a professional well known reputable company, will be covered under warranty.

If it is of any consolation to you. I recently went to the dealer and did some sleuthing. They install a Teraflex 2.5 Coil lift Kit with the TF 9550 shocks (at least my dealer 99.9% of the time) That kit is around $800 and the throw on some 37" with Cooper shoes and spider traxx spacers. Figured installed with wheels and tires, $2500? seems decent considering the price they pay on parts. Wrong, $4700.

Im sure this is a TF lift with looks like BFG TA KO2 tires and some smittybilt bumpers and carrier.

$800 lift
~ $2000 in wheels/tires
and $1900 in labor? said it was a 6 hr job so essentialliy they are charging you $313 for labor. It has been a pretty common thought to not buy lifts from the dealer...I have also included the build sheet from the factory for that Jeep you are looking at.

So the dealer mark up of $4700 for lift and wheels and tires.

Those "rails" are about $250 on amazon
Bumper is $400
Rear Bumper and carrier is $900

Total is $6250

7900-6250= $1650 left unanswered.

I always recommend buying stock and building yourself so you know and appreciate your jeep more. But if thats what you want, then get what you want. I think thats a little high, but I am not up to snuff on Texas' economy right now.

Despite what the dealer and/or the salesman is telling you, most mods done by the dealer are not covered by a Chyrsler factory warranty. They maybe covered by a warranty from the maker of the particular mod or by the dealer, which means that if something breaks, you have to take it back to the dealer where you bought the jeep.

I wouldn't go that way from a dealership. One near me has a 14 sport jku on a rc 3.25 lift with smittybilt front and rear bumpers, winch, rock rails, bushwacker flares and some 35" mickey Tompkins wrapped around some 20s. The price for their "rock hard" package was over 12k brings their price to over 42k total. Talked to the guy that sold me my jeep and he chuckled when he talked about their price markup on the whole package. Found a brand new 3.25 rc lift on Craigs near me for $200. It's all about how you want to spend your money.

That "package" of Smittybilt parts must be a special sale to dealers. A local dealer has a JKU set-up almost exactly the same. It hasn't moved since June. And I will guarantee the dealer gets the parts cheaper then regular retail price with a commercial discount with a national retailer.

They also have a two-door that hasn't moved.

But Jeep dealers aren't the only ones marking up parts. A local Chevy dealer has had this 2-door Silverado on the lot all year due to the outrageous price.

Who would pay $52k for a 2-door shortbed truck when you can get a 4-door for the same/less price.

If you are only going to use it for camping, exploring and hunting it looks like an adequate package, especially since it does have the 3.73 gear ratios. There are higher quality parts available but they may not be necessary for what you want to do. Also, if you are not into installing lifts and such yourself this could be a good deal. Since it is a '14 and figuring 10% off sticker then adding back a decent price for the aftermarket items I would be offering $34k and go no higher than $35k. At $35k that is a nice rig.

1) "I was drawn to this one because I feel like the JK needs a lift, bigger tires, and different bumpers to look mean."

Looks ain't everything, nor hardly anything, when it come to functional performance.

2) "I have the car ready for me to pick up tomorrow" Jeep just AIN'T "a car".

Mere terminology aside, what you describe is very much within the stock OEM Wrangler capacity, which comes with the standard vehicle design.

What you want for cosmetics is entirely up to your own tastes.

Personally I believe the package is overpriced as well as unnecessary for the stated mission......yet so many of us are motivated by what we think we want something to look like.

Thanks for the follow up guys. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on the jeep. It has all of the things that I would do to it anyway but I don't have to explain buying each part to my fiancé. I got the car down to 32k so really it's 7k for the package. I talked to the shop that did the work and they said I'd be looking at about 2k for the bumpers and winch, 400 for the sides, 1500 tires, 1000 wheels, 1000 for the lift. Theres some other small pars like a tire size compensator, etc. Add in labor and to me that seems about right? I normally install mods myself on my cars but this time around I just want it to be done and not have to mess with it. Things that I will probably change are either LED headlamps or HIDs, replace speakers with the 77KICK10's, and a swaybar quick disconnect.

I know it seems like a little thing but really throws off the concentration when you use the word "car" and mean the "Jeep".
Anyway, Congrats it appears to be a nice rig and they DO cost a lot once you start modding and adding things so..... price doesn't seem bad at all.

One nice thing about a "Package" like this is that you can finance it all together at one shot. Not everyone can drop $25-$30K then max out the credit cards on the extras.

That's right in the ball park where I was looking. I understand doing the mods yourself at a much better price, but having to add it to the credit card didn't seem like that good of a deal anymore. Besides, if the dealer does the mods....it's financed and the dealer warrantees their work, then even though it's a little more money it probably all evens out after paying all that interest on the credit card. I say pull the trigger.

that built in receiver hitch isn't rated for towing just a heads up. Made for a recover shackle. Enjoy your Jeep tho. Be warned Procomp shocks are really meant for off road. Don't be surprised when you take it off road and blow a shock mostly made for mall crawling. Nice jeep tho buddy has a JKU in Anvil.
