Isle of Sicily

I am hanging out on the island of Sicily for a little while, and I am amazed at the number of Jeep Wranglers I see here, especially given the cost of fuel. Several of them have been diesel Wranglers, but where I am at there are several gas JKs. It is cool seeing Jeeps every day, but it really has me missing mine.

That must be so cool to see. Like a Jeep heaven. When my Jeep is dying I'll tell him that's where he gets to go to a beautiful Jeep Island where people with sexy accents get to drive him everyday.

Jealous! Dying to go there. My granparents came from there as immigrants decades ago. Would love to check it out. Why would they leave if they knew that someday they would have jeeps there?

Ha, my grandparents, too. I went once with my mom and dad, but I was only 10-11, and barely remember any of it.

There and Australia are the next two on the list.

My son and his family live in Sicily (10 miles S. of Catania) and he has his detonator yellow JKU there. He gets gas at the Naval Air Station, where he works, and it is heavily subsidized (and rationed.) Could be a lot of those Jeep drivers are with the US military and not paying local prices for gas.

good friend that used to work with me here in Germany was from near Catania, he is stationed at the other side of the island, was TDY there a couple times, it's a dump mostly, some neat old sites but mainly a dump.

A lot of the Jeeps I see are definitely military members, I am TDY to the NAS. There are however, a lot of CRD Wranglers and Cherokees that are definitely Italian. I see other (lesser) 4WD vehicles too, so I am guessing there must be some places to do some wheeling on the island. Can't wait to get back to mine in New Mexico, want to do some wheeling while I can still afford to. Some good food and wine here, but I am glad I am only TDY here, I did half of my AF career in Europe, and enjoyed every minute, but that was 2 decades ago, things were different then.
