It's a Jeep thing, but I don't understand

Hello,
I see many pictures of Jeeps with extra lights on modified bumpers and stuff.

I don't really understand that... What are they for?

Better viewing for nighttime wheeling but mostly for looks I'd say. Not sure I understand why it would look "good" to have more lights. I'm into function over form so under carriage light, rear lights etc make more sense for being used while wheeling.

I've got six lights pointing forward and two to the rear. It's all for seeing at night while wheeling. It helps keep the surprises down and the jeep right side up.

You mean like this.

explanation is simple. For those of us Jeepers who are serious about the sport, who drive where the lights of the city don't light the road, you need a little more than headlights. For those stormy hurricane nights when the local Police Dept. ask for help getting somewhere and you want to be able to see clearly what is not only in front of you but beyond it.

It is simply a matter of choice, for me it is a want/need. But I don't see buying 3k in lights for example Rigid light bars. They are nice best of the best, but I just do not use my lights often enough to justify the cost. I got about $40 bucks invested in my lights and they work just fine for what I need typically off road the only time I would use them is when winching at night or signal another Jeep.

Seeing how you are from Enterprise I am sure you know all about Hurricanes and black outs. I grew up in Kinston liven in Opp most of my life. I miss the South that is for sure.

Most people use them for hand warmers when it is really cold and you are working on the jeep. Those babies heat up quick. Perfect solution to prevent frostbite...

Cool thanks, and I JUST found the external lights section. I've only lived in Enterprise for 4 years so far, no hurricanes since I've been here.

I drop my keys sometimes at night.

Also, beach parties, camp fires, camping, etc. and yeah, some people don't understand how high beams work.

Chicks dig them.

(Seriously, they do. They also dig big side mirrors. My ex GF once told me, "Your wife must love these huge side mirrors." Later I asked my soon-to-be-ex wife if she liked the old truck's big tow mirrors and she said yeah. Go figure.)

Because street legal headlights are designed to be used in places where there are shiny things to show you where the road is.....and not to blind the crap outta everyone. sometimes offroad you just need some daylight.

Nor'Easters can pack the punch of a Category 1 or 2 hurricane plus the added benefit of 2 - 3 feet of snow.

Like ... the two Nor'Easters in five days in February 2010.

Way off topic, but it sounds like you've been busy.

Yeah it was a veiled attempt at humor to say that sometimes, off road lights, like any other off road mod, look cool / great / whatever.

I'm sure they are more than functional for anything after about 6 pm as Jeep headlights have always sucked. (My second wife won't let me out after dark, so I don't have any aftermarket lights.)

I've taken part in that battle one time in my driving life. Fortunately for me the other car wasn't a cop.

Well if they fail to or refuse to dim their lights, the trick is to turn on ALL your lights and then drive partly into their lane..*L* You have to be blowing the horn and yelling out the window at the same time.. Also giving a one finger hand signal. So when you hit head on or they crash into something, you can say there is no way they did not see and hear you, and you was even using hand signals..

By the way, Nice Rubicon you didn't happen to buy it at Tim Whitehead Jeep did you?

here in Texas where its 100+ during the day, we usually go on long 4 day trips and sleep till noon because night wheeling is where its at. the excitement factor doubles, and the next day when you come through the same spot you usually say "WHOA I drove up that???"

I have had the brights battle a few times, one was a lady in a minivan that came up behind us doing 100+ on the highway, she couldnt figure out why every bigrig and jeep was boxing her in and flashing their lights at her. I think I even had my rocklights on when I got behind her. took her 15 miles to realize her brights were on.
