Smile Its finally time to buy my JKU - NEED HELP

Howdy folks!

I am one of the guys who have envied wranglers all my life and its time I get my own I have been around friends with wranglers and I get amazed with all the cool stuff they do to it and make it look awesome cheers to you all

Here's my situation, I am 26, have been sharing a corolla with my fiance for 3yrs now. I have a 6mo old GSD and 7weeks old black lab, thats my little family. Graduated last year in may and landed a full time job and now waiting for my next paycheck to seal the deal... well actually I am building my own and yes I am willing to wait 6weeks (thats what my dealer told me)

I need help with building my wrangler. I am going for 2012 Sport 2 door (BLACK) with the following changes/additions:
MUST-HAVE> 3.73 rear axle ratio [$50]
MUST-HAVE> 3 piece hard top [$735]
MUST-HAVE> auto trans [$1,125]
MUST-HAVE> air condition [$895]
MUST-HAVE> engine block heater [$35]
NOT SURE> connectivity group w/ EVIC
NOT SURE> infinity speakers with sub

The dealer is trying to sell me the wranglers that he has on his lot, but I am not so sure about that... also i hate the fact that the wranglers on the lot must have been test driven by many rookie drivers, I want my own!

Please help with anything else I should consider adding onto my list. Here's my use for the wrangler.
70% ON Road = Mostly in City
30% OFF Road = Terrain Level 6/10 just to go up to my 40acre property to shoot some clay pigeons

What about the skid plates? Do I have to add that separately? I didnt see any option for that... What about Anti-Spin differential, is that something important to have? what kind of LSD do I get by default in 2012 JKU?

Sorry for the long post and thanks for helping. I love this forum!

Sounds like your on your way to a great start. If the dealer wants you to buy a JK on the lot, he needs to make it worth you not waiting for one you order.

The ones on the lot aren't bad. I bought mine off the lot.

You will want to add at least a front skid plate to cover/protect the exhaust cross over pipes. Other skid plates may be wanted depending on type of off roading that you do.

Congrats and have fun

First off, welcome and congrats on your, soon to be, purchase. If you aren't happy with anything off the lot, for any reason, you are better off ordering. It's your money, get what YOU want, NOT what the dealer wants you to get. From what I can see, what you have listed will be a nice setup for a DD on mostly city streets. Skid plates really aren't necessary, IMHO, unless you are planning on doing more offroading than what you are planning. If it's mainly flat terrain, no rocks or logs, you should be fine with stock. Looking forward to seeing pics when you get your rig!

Definitely get the LSD. It does not come standard. It's called Trac Lok.

Also definitely get the connectivity group. It includes a bluetooth hookup for your phone, which alone is well worth it. The EVIC adds trip computer which is pretty handy too. Along with that it give you some electronic options like how long to keep the lights on after you leave and one touch all door locks
If you are planning on getting a better sound system, forgo the connect group because youll end up getting BT hookup in the new stereo anyway. If keeping the stereo stock, get connex and the infinity sound. Its only a couple bucks more

Thanks but the ones on the dealer's lot are with 3.21 axle ratio and thats the only thing thats throwing me off. I think its worth upgrading it to 3.73 even if that means I have to build my own. It'll be worth the wait

If you haven't done so already, consider joining Tread Lightly for the automatic 1% under dealer invoice pricing

Yes, 3:73 gears are much better than 3:21. I got 3:21 because i knew i would be changing to 4:56 or 4:88 soon.

^ This is reason enough to order, IMHO (as someone with. 3:21 that had to buy off the lot in a hurry!)

Which dealer(s) are you looking at? I'm in Sacramento also and just took delivery of mine in January (ordered at the end of November and had to wait for the December build cycle). I would definitely get the trak-lock LSD. I used Matt Harrison from Autowest up in Roseville and he really did a good job of taking care of me. They also ordered my Jeep with no $$$ down and nothing signed. You might check their inventory online, they tend to have some 3.73 gear ratios in stock more than the other dealers in the area.

Expensive. In the $1000's from what I've seen mentioned. If you know the 3.73's will work for you (i.e. not putting on 37" tires and needing much bigger gearing than 3.73's) then it's totally worth it to spend the extra $50 to get it from the factory whether you have to order it to get that or search through dealer inventory and get the local dealer to make a trade/etc. to get it to their lot.

It's something that should be left to a professional shop that has done several gear swaps and provides a warranty. Gears will run you about $500-700 with overhaul kit and add another $600-$1000 for labour depending on shop rates.

The reason I ordered mine was I couldn't find one on the lot with 3.73 and Limited Slip, so I built mine got what I wanted and none of what I didn't need.

I bought my first 3 new vehicles (98 TJ, 01 RAM, 07 FJ) off the lot, but I ordered my 12 JKR exactly as I wanted it. This way I don't have any regrets.

If you can stand the wait (some days I can't - expected delivery is the end of March), order it the way you would like it.

Get your dealership to do a search on other dealer lots in your area. They maybe able to find your exact specs and if your dealership finds one on another lot and really want your business they will do a trade to get your JK and $$$ in their pockets sooner.

get the dual top or just the soft top, on second thought in Sacramento you can just remove the hard top for 70% of the year. I really miss that place.

I'm almost wishing I'd bought the soft top instead. I don't actually have a place right now of my own that I can store the rear of the hard top. The hard top just seemed to be a wise choice at the time though. Oh well. Might just have to rent a storage unit. If I owned my home I'd put something in the garage to hold it but I'm renting the house from a friend so that's a no go.

The locking lugs are cheap enough, they may throw them in, all you can do is ask.

Rubicon or Sahara an option? some of what you are looking to "build" on your sport are standard options on the upgraded packages. First job, congrats on that... exciting time of life! Back when I was in your same position, sans kids and dog, I had the same thoughts on the wrangler and pulled the trigger on a brand new 91 YJ, that wasn't even the Sport.... big mistake, after owning for a year, I had wished I would have went with 1 of the upgraded packages. Same thing happened with the next 1 in 97, the 4L was not available in CA, and I had to get a car because of insurance totaling.... big mistake, should have rented a car for a month and waited for the 4.0. this time, the quote of the day between my wife and I was "We are not going to sit around the camp fire and say to ourselves... man we should have gone with the Sahara" so, we ended up with the Rubicon.

If budget is an issue - you may be close to reaching the sahara package with all your add ons above.

Just a thought

I think the security might be nice, didn't look into it as I didn't want any of the power stuff for doors that I planned to have off as much as possible anyway.
