JC Whitney?

Has anyone ever found anything of use (and at a good price) from JC Whitney? I've ordered motorcycle tires from them, and they have a lot of Jeep stuff, but has anyone ever found something that was a solid buy?

Just know what you are looking for. Some things seem like a good deal others high. My question is quality of some of the items they seem to be knock offs sometimes or not have a brand listed.

Jake, I can out date you on J.C.Whitney. When I bought my first new Jeep 35 years ago I bought all of my accessories from J.C.!

About the same time you could build a Jeep from the Sears & Roebuck catalog and never use an original Jeep part. It was a separate catalog for Jeeps parts only.

Yeah, the new location is actually a really nice motorcycle ride from where I live. It sucks that I have to pay sales tax on stuff I order, but It also arrives pretty quickly. If need be, I could go pick it up.

I just bought a set of front and rear 2-piece soft doors from them about a week ago for less than I was able to find them for elsewhere...but the 10% off thing ended a week ago. I had been watching for a good price on them for several months. I hadn't bought anything from them for at least 10 years. They were shipped within 24 hours...the front drop-shipped from Bestop and the rears from someplace back east...of course, Denver (Bestop's location) is back east to me.

Awful, awful, awful customer service. Deplorable at best. Needless to say my last run in with them was not pleasant.

AND, back then... JC Whitney was only a catalog FRONT for a parts company in Chicago called Warshowskys....... there was NO JC Whitney.....

A buddy and I tried to visit JC Whitney in Chicago..... only to find out it DID NOT exist........

My dad took me to Warshawskys many decades ago....

When I was in high-school I used the love all the catalogs....and I would dream of the things I would do if I ever got a car.... A 1000 watt amp and two 12" subs for $99??!? What a steal!!!!

Back in the day JC was the Quadratec of the time. Now? Not so much. A motorcycle ride away? Really? How about a top down doors of Jeep ride away?

Well that too...but I rode there on my bike long before owned a Jeep. I'm sure a Jeep ride will happen in the future....there is even an off-road park not too far from there as well.

But you gotta understand, it is a really nice motorcycle ride there. It is not too far from a place called Starved Rock (state park)...big motorcycle destination because of the curves and scenery.

I spent a bit of time at Warshawski's in the 90s buying VW parts. Everything was opened, used, pre-installed, or just plain crap... but the price was right. They had a bunch of cool old cars in the windows. State and Archer looks a bit different now. The JC Whitney catalogs still look the same as the old Warshawski versions.

I bought a Bestop trektop for my JKU from them right around the holidays. 20% off and free shipping, hard to beat.

...so then, you were upgrading the "original Jeeps for $50" advertised in the back of other rags of the 50s-60s???

My first (shared) Jeep experience was a CJ2 during the JFK years....anything we could hang on it represented some kind of improvement in comfort and style.

It really was amazing where tall skinny tires could take you, and 'winch' was a financial concept simply beyond our collective imagination.

Do your research and shop around for the best prices. Only YOU know if you are getting the best price from the best location. Of course some of us have gotten a good "solid" buy from JC Whitney. It just depends on what you are buying and how much you are willing to pay for it. But you have to know what the other retailers are selling that particular item for.

When I was 17 (1964) I bought upholstry material and seat covers from JCW for my 1940 Chevy. They were fine. A year later someone backed into me while parked at the local Hot Shoppe - anyone from the DC area should remember them, and I ordered a replacement grille from JCW. The factory grille weighed at least 60 pinds. The JCW replacement came from Argentina and was made out of stamped aluminum cans! You could read the labels on the inside of the grille! You get what you pay for! Back then someone told me the Warshawski catalogs were sent to garages and gas stations.

There is NOTHING that you can get from JCW's that you can find from a vendor for less money and better customer service. They're worse than Q-tec and 4WP.
