Jeep Fire

Anyone know why a manual transmission would set the wiring harness to the battery on fire?

I have two sets of lights and the winch but very very well done. Never a problem. My 3rd gear went out on a 12'. They replaced it the whole transmission Tuesday. Yesterday I was driving in town. All the dash lights..engine, battery, others started going off. I stopped. Smoke under the hood, opened it and the harness, negative was on fire. No auxiliaries..lights, etc were engaged or on. Grabbed the extinguisher and put it out. I am so so glad I got the thing. But on the other side, driver behind the bumper I had red fluid. either transmission or pwr steering just poured out...at least 3 quarts. So could it have caused, shorted? I'm not sure. Dealer has it back so I have to wait.

The probably disconnected the battery when the changed the transmission, so perhaps that's a clue.

Glad you caught it in time.

Maybe a wire got pinched between the bell housing and the engine when then replaced the trans... Had this happen on an old K-5 blazer. Didn't result in the fire, but with the wrong wire pinched it could.

The only red fluid in a Wrangler with a manual trans would be the TC. It takes ATF4.

No mall crawlers here. Closest one is over two hours drive away. We have deer, elk, coyote and chipmunk crawlers though...
