Jeep Order - What To Expect?

I ordered a 2012 Rubicon JK on 12/12, or at least my dealership hit my credit card for the $500 order fee, and haven't received anything yet from the dealership or Jeep. My buddy said I should get a VON soon, then when they actually begin building my Jeep, they will send me a VIN.

I'm trying to see what I should be receiving from Jeep and my dealership to verify that my vehicle has actually been ordered. What should I be asking for?

production is apparently moving very quickly. I ordered my jeeps on 12/6. The dealer gave me the VON# a couple of days later and I started calling Jeep directly for an update. 2 weeks later I got an email from my sales guy that the jeeps were built, one was already shipped and the other was waiting for transport. If all goes smoothly I should have them both within the next 2 weeks.

From what I read, the Jeeps are built in batches and are very difficult to pinpoint when an individual order will be built. Some guys are lucky and wait 2-3 weeks. Others can wait over 8 weeks. The best thing to do is hound your dealer for the VON# and then call Jeep directly for updates. Good luck.

Give it time-follow up weekly, if you badger more often you'll find they share less just to get you off the phone.
Production typically slows a little these last two weeks-but all our orders have been picked up within 2 days in the system-and depending on options/dealer allotment-you'll get a VON/VIN within 2 weeks.
Congrats on the new rig-share what you got!

I ordered my Crush JKUS Dec. 5. I called my salesman yesterday to see if they had the VON, which is the tracking number Jeep assigns to the build. He said, "Huh? Say what now?"

So I called Jeep customer service this morning. She said, "Huh? Say what now? Of course they have the VON. Hang on the line while I call them." So she did. And within minutes, I had the VON and the VIN. Excellent start with customer service, Jeep!

Once you have the VON, you can log into the Jeep site. It keeps you informed about what stage of construction your Jeep is in. Mine's on the first rung, 'Scheduled for Production'. So we're off! No indication of delivery dates yet.

The dealer may have your VON already, but they may not know it. My salesman honestly had no idea about a VON, or that customers could track their vehicle's production status.

Suggest you call your dealer for the VON. If that doesn't work, call Jeep and they'll call the dealer and get it for you. At that point, you don't need to communicate with the dealer again, except regarding pickup and transaction date.

Let me know if you need the Jeep number and the tracking website, I'll dig them up and post them.

Interesting side note: The chick at Jeep said they are working on a system where customers could actually see pictures and videos of their exact car being built. It's not ready yet, but how neat is that?!

No offense to board members who sell-but most car sales guys have nothing to do with ordering-so they are not your best bet for info. Ask for the new car manager or new car ordering-

I always dealt with the dealership's sales manager, who is also the person that does the ordering. Needless to say he is very busy. What I found worked best is to call Jeep directly. You get a different person every time and you can call everyday if you want without "Bothering" anyone. Calling the dealership isn't going to get you anything more then you would get directly from Jeep.

One other thing, when I called the Jeep rep. she told me they have been working like crazy to fulfill demands before the end of the year but even she was surprised to my turn around.

Recieved the VON the day I ordered, The VIN a week later and I picked up my Rubi one month from the order date. Did I mention that I went through Pat at Fields Jeep Give him a call he's great to work with and gets things done quick and more importantly knows what he is doing.

There is absolutely no way to tell how long it will take to get a Jeep once it is ordered. Matador is correct in that they build in bunches, so it is the luck of the draw if you order something they are currently building you might get lucky and be 4 weeks or under. I order mine JK crush orange 11/8 and it just shipped last week.

Shipping in another complete crap shoot. You may get lucky and it ships out right away because there is a full order or a lot of Jeeps coming near you, or again you can be like me. Last email from Jeep was mine may not get to me in Omaha until after the first of the year, which will be over 3 weeks in shipping and 10 weeks total to get the Jeep from the order date. I am only a couple of states away on a major east to west rail line. A guy in Seattle had his shipped in 12 days. Dealerships can't get any more specific information from Jeep than you can through customer service, none of them have a clue. Every time I call it is a different expected delivery date to the dealer. My guess is they have absolutely no idea where my Jeep is and it is probably on the east coast somewhere lost on a rail car. Best to be patient and not have high expectations, this is the Chrysler Corporation we are talking about.

Ordered my Bright White Rubicon 10/7. Received on 11/28. Dealer told me Jeep was shooting for 45 day delivery on all "sold" wranglers. "Sold" is the coding your Sales Manager inputs when the vehicle is ordered for a customer rather than for the lot. A VON (vehicle order number) is assigned the moment the order is sent. It is not something your dealer has to wait for. A VIN is not assigned until the frame is built. Until around 11/20 we could see exactly what the dealers could see on build progress on a site called "insight". It has been removed and a new site called "dealerdirect" has replaced it and it is ID and password protected so that only dealerships have access. When I was on "insight" and speaking to my dealer while he was on "dealerdirect" we were seeing the exact same page. Your dealer or his/her sales manager can pull up, in seconds, the current info on your build.....24/7. The build itself takes a few to several hours. The time before and after the build can be agonizing to watch. The order can take days to be accepted. Another several days to a few weeks to get the frame built and all the parts collected for the build (parts are not warehoused at the plant, all the parts are separately ordered from the suppliers for each build and once collected a build date is assigned. After the build it may sit for days or a week in a yard waiting to be put on a train. Your dealer can watch the updates as the train travels and unloads at many locations on its way to you. Last I read Jeep is having a hard time keeping up with Wrangler demand due to engine/tranny upgrades for 2012. Everyone wants one. A night shift was considered but dropped as a full daily shift is needed for line maintanence to keep the assembly machinery working properly and prevent major breakdowns. Bottom line....your dealer CAN see exactly what is going on with your build ANY time....there is NO set timeline except a corp attempt for 45 day delivery on sold units....the Jeep site is all but worthless and the customer service folks at Jeep are very very nice but CANNOT see what is on the "dealerdirect" site. Hope this helps. Be patient.....it will all be worth it when you get your window sticker invoice with the statement "specially built for 'your name here' on it.

I received my VON today, but guess I'll just sit back and wait for a few weeks to see what happens. I've about exhausted the internet looking at potential mods...

Order fee? I've never heard of an order fee...is this like a $500 down payment?

I used the Insight website to track my vehicle once I got a VIN. Not sure if it is still working or not...

DiSH - Yes, I'm referencing a down payment. I've got my VON and called JEEP today (877-IAM-JEEP) only for the guy to tell me it's great that I have a VON, but that his system wasn't showing anything yet, that maybe it would show up in the pre-production system next week. Being the eternal pessimist I am, how do I even know an order has been placed?

i'm with you kerryva. i've ordered vehicles from other manufacturers and they can at least tell me, 'yep, your vehicle order is in the system, it's in order-accepted phase' or something generically similar.

i am also an eternal pessimist/worrier in this regard, so when i call/ask after 2 weeks what my status update is, i'm not expecting them to say "built and ready", i just want to know the order is at least somewhere out there in JeepLand and that they will presumably get to it when they can.

telling me I have a VON but no one apparently can (or will) track it on the jeep.com/vots sight or dealer makes me think something dumb like 'uhhh the order is lost, i'm gonna wait 8 weeks and they will finally tell me this and then i have to reorder and start the wait all over again'...

i can't help it, i want the Jeep now! so i want to see what it's status is, and knowing next to nothing since the VON isn't getting me any love is disturbing. hehe

Swami, I'm the same way. I didn't rest until I got confirmation that things were in motion. The good news for me is that its been a quick process. I ordered my Jeeps on 12/6, we had to revise my Rubicon order to include the 4:10 gear ratio on 12/11. The dealer gave me the VON # and I was content to wait the remaining 6-8 weeks without another peep. That changed on 12/18 when he sent me an email letting me that my wife's Sahara was built and mine was entering the build status.

With that I started contacting Jeep Customer service and learned a couple of things. First, its a hit/miss on the type of counselor you speak too. Sometimes they can only provide you with very basic information and other times they can give you a lot of details. I also learned that their information is delayed for some reason. Case in point, my modified order. One counselor told me that he didn't see the 4:10 ratio listed in my build sheet, which set off my paranoia and a flurry of calls to the dealer. Only for them to explain the delay to me. Sure enough, I called this morning and the 4:10 ratio is now listed.

My advice is to keep all the factors in mind when your calling for an update. Apparently things are always changing and estimated dates shift as the system catches up. Its not ideal, but as soon as you realize that, its easier to accept. Good luck.

thanks Matador! i will try (emphasis - TRY) to wait another week before I call back all worried again. I know Jeep is working this week on production for the first time in 28 years (i think that was what i read), so i'm hopeful/sure if i call just before 1/1 that they should have something in the system by then to at least indicate my status as "alive" since order date was 12/12.

Some people are lucky. We ordered our JKR Nov. 3. Got our VON two weeks later after I called requesting it. Jeep CS still didn't have it. Dec 6 I called the dealer about to cancel the order and go somewhere else and wha-la we have a VIN. But that's about it. I call Jeep CS and get a scheduled ship date of Dec 15. Dealer calls me on the 15th and asks if I could come in to sign some paperwork and tells me the Jeep shipped today (the 16th) and scheduled date to dealer is Jan. 2. but it could be here sooner.

So just sit back and enjoy the wait, once they put it in the system and you have a VON it is going to be built it just seems to take forever.
