jeep rear ended, damage to look for?

This afternoon, I was rear ended while sitting at a stop light. Thankfully no one was hurt. The other car took quite a beating and it looks like the jeep came out unharmed. It's reassuring that the jeep is built like a tank since my wife is 6 months pregnant.

It looks like the jeep took all of the impact on the spare and trailer hitch. To me, it looks like the spare is angled down more than normal now but I pulled the spare and do not see any damage to the carrier or tailgate. The only damage I have found is a small scuff on the hitch. I will take it to the dealer to have them inspect it but would like to know what damage I should look for. I have heard of welds popping on the tailgate which leads to annoying rattles but don't see or hear anything now.

I was rear ended in my 2009 JKUR by an idiot texting in his Toyota Prius. It was a much stronger impact than yours: his POS Toyota wedged itself under my Jeep; my trailer hitch cut the whole front of his Prius in half, right down the middle, like a can opener, and pushed everything in the engine compartment agaisnt the road and his firewall. His POS car was totaled; mine only needed a new rear steel bumper.

But months later I noticed a whine in 2nd, 4th and 6th gears --it was a stick shift. Turns out, one of the transmission mounts to the frame had broken. The insurer didn't want to accept responsibility at that point.

I would also inspect the inside of the tailgate around all of the spot welds. If you see any cracking of the paint around the welds you will most likely need a new tailgate. The tailgate is pretty flimsy and there are tons of threads about these spot welds breaking due to over sized tires. Any impact to the tire could cause the same damage.

Just do a google search for "broken spot welds jeep wrangler" for images and more details.

The way i understand it that is partly true - having a real frame under the jeep to me is a good thing, being more stout than say as in one example a prius, the prius is going to take the worst of it. Bigger, sturdier, heavier, good thing in my book. Hit an immovable object and its a different story.

Thier insurance has to pay. Have it checked out by a body shop not the dealer. The body shop deals with this all the time. Most dealers farm out body and frame work.
