Jeep stuck in 4wd....help plz

I'm a new Jeep owner so I do not know much about Jeep's. Recently got an 08 JK Wrangler Sport about 5 months back and put it into 4wd for the first time, now the 4wd lever moves freely and up and down, does not try to catch 2wd, 4wd H or L nor N. Seems as if the lever is disconnected somewhere, but where should I look or what should I do....?

You probably have a broken transfer case shift linkage bushing. $0.35 plastic part, and a little time under your Jeep, and you'll be fine. In the mean time, you can reconnect the linkage without the bushing and get back into 2WD. Use the search to learn about replacing the bushing, or just wait, you'll be deluged with info on it......

Edit: damn you UHB

You have a $.050 clip that is probably broke. Look underneath where the TC linkage is.

Buy a handful of them and keep in your glove box

Your Jeep dealer parts counter. The part number on the bushing is 68064273-AA.

Look underneath it while someone else moves around the lever inside. You will see it. Mines popped out a couple times and I don,t know how. I pop it back in and it's good to go. Stressd me out the first time too.

I had a mechanic install an e-clip around mine so that, even if the bushing disintegrates, the cable stays attached and operational.

You can grab the lever on the transfer case end with a pair of pliers and shift it manually. Pull the lever on the console to 2wd, then go under with the pliers and move the lever on the transfer case to where it lines up with the end of the cable.

This happened to me a few weeks ago on the trail. It was in 4wd L when it let go and became loose. A guy I was wheeling with was able to go under the jeep and put it into 4wd H. My wife took it to the dealer last week while I was at work (its still under warranty) and they had to order a part for it which will be here this week. Not sure what the part is but they told her it would take 2 to 3 hours to install.

It was actually the lower clip that broke by the TC and the arm the shifting lever connects to under my console lol

Unimpressive looking little white bushings, for something so important.
Parts department had three, so I bought 'em. I think they were $.84 each.

I'm necro-posting on this thread. Same happened to me, have the little bushings but where in the name of Hades is this "lever" or linkage? I've been digging under there for the better part of an hour and don't see anything loose, dangling or not connected. If someone has pics I would appreciate it. I am mechanically declined so keep this in mind.

Have you checked the linkage under your console? It may have become disconnected there and not at the t-case.

Would you by any chance know what size e-clips those are?

It was the linkage in the console. Thanks again Positrak. (looks like you migt have a GSD too judging by the hairs on the console. Mine looked similar.)
