Jeep Summer Top Advice Needed for a Newbie!

Hey guys,

First off I just want to say how excited I am for finally getting my first jeep, a 2011 Unlimited Sahara hard top. It has been my dream car since I was five-years-old!! I am also very grateful a resource such as this is available to jeep owners!

The issue I have now is picking out a summer top that is practical, easy/fast to install (including all the added bars since mine is a hard top), and not too expensive. I wouldn't mind being caught in the rain/direct sun all the time, but a large portion of my summer will be spend with my mother/6-year-old little brother who are not as weather tolerant as I am haha!

I would prefer something I can keep with me when the top is off in-case of rain, something could leave on if I do not want to put the hard top back on immediately, and something that someone who has ZERO jeep experience can install without any major modifications/screws/drilling.

Since I am still a college student, I can afford up to about $350 on my own but would be willing to save a little extra if it meant a big jump in quality.

Also, is there any advice for things to have/do when you get caught with the top off in the rain? I am not sure how the cloth seats/sound system/electronic components of my jeep will handle. I don't really have a reliable source of information regarding Jeeps at home so I feel a little "in the dark" about most things.

Thanks for the help!

Well if you get caught in the rain, there are drain plugs under the carpet, let the water out and move on. In my first Jeep I took the plugs out and left them out. Not sure that was a great idea, but it worked for my Tj with half doors that always leaked anyways.

As far as a top I am currently making the same choice so I have no experience to make a recommendation.

For your budget you could maybe get some type of safari style top or a spiderwebshade. The spider tops are not waterproof but they really cut down on the heat when the sun is beating down on you.

Your not alone, looking at getting a soft top too. Although I have a bit more to spend.
But so far the premium top OEM is around $1800 yikes! perhaps watching craigs list is order.

Now the trextop looks interesting to me as around $600 new. Not sure about frameless design though.

I have the spiderweb shade and love it. Stays on under the hard top. great for cutting down on the sun! Not water proof though.

Well I'll leave the top suggestions to other but I'll give you some other advice.

Invest in some microfiber towels. The inside WILL get dusty.
