Jeep windshields cracking

While headed to work one morning, I was the only vehicle on the road and I heard a loud pop from the passenger side windshield area of my 2013 JKU. There were no vehicles around and I assumed it was just a piece of ice coming off the windshield as I couldn't see any damage. Then 2 days later I discovered a small crack about 2" long developing that now has turned into this within 3 days. It was determined to be a stress fracture, not road hazard damage.

I called the dealer and was treated HORRIBLY, (thats another story though), so then called to see if my insurance covered it which they do with no deductible. I then brought the Jeep to Safelite and the claims lady that I spoke to over the phone from Plattsburgh NY, said that they've had 3 claims just like mine this week alone on 2013 Jeeps. She said that Jeep is looking in to some problems with stress fractures occurring suddenly without cause, and it may eventually be a recall or warranty issue. Whether or not this is factual, I don't know but just wanted to share it with the forum members. I must say I'm saddened it happened because I've only got 1,400 miles on it and I'm worried ill end up with a leaky install. I know these guys are good, but just never had a windshield replaced before. Anyone else have this happen or was this lady just making conversation with me.....? Thanks

That's exactly the spot where mine cracked too - in the garage, overnight. My dealer was a lot nicer than yours though, it's going in Friday as a warrantee fix. I could have had it done by insurance & it would have been easier since they'd come out to my work, now I have to leave it at the dealer all day, but I figured why claim it on my insurance if Jeep should be fixing it? The more they have to fix, the faster they'll come up with a solution because I do believe it's a problem.

Your dealer decided it was a stress crack and then wouldn't cover it? If that's the case I'd flip out. Mine had to submit pics to Chrysler & Chrysler then had to make the call. If it was determined to be a stress crack why make a claim on your insurance? Even with full glass it still goes on your CLUE report.

Hi Swamphunter,

you might want to report/research this at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchVehicles, they keep track of owner complaints. I haven't had the issue myself, but sometimes things come up they haven't seen in testing.

The Pontiac Firebird had a bad issue with this that wasn't found until it was in production, people would close the liftgate from one corner, torque the glass, and it would shatter. Happened especially in cold weather. Could be something similar if you hit a bump just right and torqued the frame. Or, with 1400 miles, it could have just been a weak piece of glass.

As far as windshield replacement, I've never had leaking issues - the thing to remember is to make sure the surface around the glass is warm for the sealant, i.e. have the vehicle in a garage or somewhere warm (or keep your defroster on beforehand) and don't slam the doors for a few days after it's installed, or keep a window cracked to alleviate some pressure.

The dealers can only cover windshields for the first 12/12 ... and even then have to take and submit pictures to Chryslers Digital Imaging program. It is quite a hassle.

That said, most of what people believe are stress cracks are actually stone chips. If you can feel the crack with your fingernail at all, particularly where it started then it is not a stress crack and was caused by an outside influence.

The dealer did not inspect the crack at all because they are an hour drive away and I originally called them from the Jeep when I discovered it. When I originally called them, they were not interested in even looking at it. Said it WAS NOT a warranty issue either way. Chuck the service manager at Parkway Chevrolet in Canton NY, said that's what my insurance was for. I argued the fact with him and stated that I wanted them to determine if in fact it was or was not a stress fracture as I was worried about my CLUE report and deductible and he got so upset I had to remind him my 12 year old son could hear him as we were on Bluetooth calling from inside the vehicle. I told him i was going to call Chrysler and he stated thats fine and hung up on me.
The following day I stopped by my insurance company (Nationwide) and inquired and they were more than helpful. They stated that they would just cover it either way as I had full glass coverage and that even though it does show on a CLUE report, it does not affect me negatively at all as it is declared on there as "glass claim", and that its through no fault of mine NOR a road hazard. Said its noted as stress fracture replacement glass only. I could force the issue with the dealer however even my salesman who was willing to push it through after he had heard that Safelite did determine it as stress fracture, he said that it can take a couple of weeks to get it repaired as they have to photo it and submit it, wait for Chryslers determination, then get a replacement shipped, schedule an appointment around my work schedule and then do the work. Safelite is doing it tomorrow (Thursday) at 8am and using a brand new OEM windshield. :-)

You can see the crack has grown 3" in two days... not too mention we are getting a bad storm here in northern NY today....

I was gonna say douche bag. I'm not usually one to make a stink but when people lie to get out of doing the job they're paid to do, and then are rude & disrespectful on top of it - I kinda can't help myself.

Mine has a crack at the same exact place. I also have another on the driver side that was caused by a small rock.

These windshields are too fragile.

This is interesting since I have a 2013 that makes kind of small rock hitting sound in the corner of the windshield when I put side loads on the Jeep, as you do in a turn. Stress relieving itself maybe? Don't know. Time will tell if my windshield cracks too.

Mine also cracked there while it was sitting in my driveway warming up on a cold day with the defrost on high. There was a small rock peck close to the edge so I knew not to even bother with the dealer.

Word of caution for those who don't have a 0 deductible on their insurance like me. If you want the Mopar windshield with the little jeep in the corner and grill outline at the top, it is a $700 windshield. Just a basic windshield is about $200.

My '13 had a stress crack as well. I was driving in some high wind/snow with defrost on high. My crack came from the bottom. I have full glass coverage on my insurance so a replacement windshield didn't cost me anything. I also got the MOPAR one with the little jeep. The safelite rep asked me if I had the windshield with a jeep symbol above the mirror.

I'm new to the wrangler, but not to windshield cracks. My previous Liberty had 4 windshield replacements while I had it.

OP if it were me I would make the dealer replace it just to stick it to them. I would wait the weeks or whatever it takes and demand they cover it on their dime - especially if it is a stress crack. Why have your insurance cover a manufacturer's defect?

Fortunately I have 100% coverage on windshields on my policy. Agreed that you should get the MOPAR one with the Jeep emblem on it. That's what it came with then that's what you should get.

I had thought of this but since my crack is growing an average of 1.5" a day, I just want it done. :-)

Your dealer sucks plain and simple. It seems pretty obvious that Jeep had an issue with a batch of defective windshield glass on '13 Wranglers. In every case I've seen so far the dealer called Chrysler and agreed to replace it with zero hassle. I'd imagine Jeep knows about this and is resolving it quietly with as little customer aggravation as possible.

The fact that this service manager wouldn't look at the windshild to clearly see that the crack is not related to an impact or make the call to Jeep regarding warranty work they'd be paid for illustrates his complete incompetence. I've walked into several dealers with the intention to buy and walked out just based on the bad vibe everyone emits. If it we're me I'd go nuts giving this place bad reviews.

Honestly, it's great your insurance covers glass because using a reputable glass company company makes the process super easy. Just make sure they're installing one with the same Jeep grill printing at the OEM one (If it's not OEM.)

Same thing happened to mine last week, crack just appeared while heating up before work...didn't even think to call the dealer though. Safelite replaced it the next day, although they managed to destroy the gasket between the dash and windshield in the process but that's another story

Mine cracked without a hit. I really didn't think too much about it because the replacement was no deductible.

Washing it this weekend noticed a 6" crack right behind the mirror. Small chip indicated a rock hit it. Only 3000 miles. Replaced by insurance.

Darn. I'm adding my "me, too" to this thread. I have a crack that I took three weeks ago on my two month old 2013 JK while wheeling. I have no idea how it happened. My thought was that running the defroster cracked it. My service manager was nice enough about it but said that if he could stick the writing end of a ball point pen into a divot that the crack was caused by a foreign object impact.

Mine cracked Saturday on the highway. Thought for sure that it was a rock, but when I looked at the crack it was only one inch from the bottom of the windshield. Found it odd to have cracked there and couldn't see a mark.

Mine could be either way.

I'm on my 6th windshield on my JKU. The seventh will be installed this spring. Cold nights and heavy use of my defroster caused my latest crack.
