I know this topic is pretty raw since the news came out just today about the JKs 07-12 having the takata airbag issue and I am starting this thread to see when you guys get your recall and what you will do till you get the chance to take your jeep in

This. It's not the actual air bags like with other vehicles that had problems and the air bags would activate when they'e not supposed to, propelling shrapnel into the driver. It's not that type of issue. What they will do is replace the "cover" and "shroud" to better protect the clockspring. There's actually no problem unless the air bag light activates. If I happen to get the recall notice, I'm still on the fence whether or not I want the dealer to take apart the dash/cover when I don't have an issue. I'm going to research it more and wait to see what type of dealer experience other JK owners that I know have and what exactly is involved, if and when they take their JK's in for the recall.

I believe that's the old recall for 07 RHD JK's. There have also been TSB's for 07 and 08 JK's with RHD involving clockspring replacement. The recent NHTSA info. seems to affect a greater number of JK's from 07-16 and they don't indicate clockspring replacement, only a shroud and steering cover replacement, unless there's an air bag light.

I had my clock spring replaced when I had my 09 JKR. The clock spring is in center hub of steering wheel below the airbag. I paid $500 at the time some years ago when airbag light stayed on to replace it. All dealer does is remove center hub to get at clock spring there are plenty YouTube videos around detailing install

My daughter had the clock spring "repair" done on her Grand Cherokee. After the repair, the air bag deployed while she was driving because they didn't do the proper repair. Thankfully she was in city traffic when it happened. If the dealer wasn't 500 miles away, I would probably be in jail now, but they made it right and my rage subsided

I could have missed it, but the only thing I see regarding Jeep Wrangler JK air bags is a possible issue regarding the clockspring which could affect air bag deployment. I haven't seen anything mentioning "Takata" air bags involving Wrangler JK's. If you have a link for something other than the clockspring issue please post it. I don't see that JK's are equipped with Takata air bags.

This blog is keeping an up-to-date list of the Takata air bag issues. It just updated 6/21 to show 2007-2012 Jeep Wrangler is now on the list. What's more interesting is that FCA admitted they are still using the Takata airbags in the 2013-2016 Jeep Wranglers as well, but will be stopping this week. Scary thoughts, they know, but they keep using them..

"UPDATE 6/21/2016, 2:00 p.m.: Fiat Chrysler said it would stop using non-desiccated Takata airbag inflators with ammonium nitrate by next week. This applies to all of its cars built for the North American market. FCA will end production globally by mid-September. As of now, FCA said that only the 2016 Jeep Wrangler’s passenger-side front airbag used such an inflator and that it would notify potential buyers of any of these unsold vehicles. Without describing its methods, FCA also said it tested “nearly 6300 older versions” of this inflator and found no problems. The non-desiccated inflators are considered dangerous since they do not have a chemical to absorb moisture."

I guess FCA isn't aware that some Wrangler might have their top down in an unexpected rain storm, or forge water up to 30" deep. :D

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler’s passenger-side inflator is the final FCA US air-bag component to migrate from a non-desiccated ammonium-nitrate design.
Wrangler is always the last for updates.

June 21st FCA announcement om this issue -

http://media.fcanorthamerica.com/newsrelease.do?id=17592&mid=1

"FCA US Eliminates Use of Non-desiccated Ammonium-nitrate Takata Air-bag Inflators
June 21, 2016 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC will cease NAFTA-market production of vehicles equipped with non-desiccated ammonium-nitrate Takata air-bag inflators, by next week. Global production is expected to end by mid-September.

Most inflators used in FCA US vehicles employ alternate propellants. Others use desiccant-enhanced ammonium nitrate. Neither is associated with any inflator ruptures of the kind attributed to certain non-desiccated ammonium-nitrate inflators.

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler’s passenger-side inflator is the final FCA US air-bag component to migrate from a non-desiccated ammonium-nitrate design. The Company is unaware of any failures involving this inflator.

In addition, tests were performed on nearly 6,300 older versions of this component, many of which were subject to potentially problematic environmental conditions. All performed as intended.

Unsold vehicles that are so-equipped will be identified for customers. These customers will also be advised that the vehicles will be recalled in the future. They are not currently subject to recall.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has specified a recall schedule for vehicles equipped with these inflators. The schedule, known as the Coordinated Remedy Program, adheres to the findings of an exhaustive investigation by industry, government and third-party experts.

The investigation determined non-desiccated ammonium nitrate may degrade after several years of exposure to high absolute humidity. Such degradation may cause inflators to deploy with excessive force.

The Coordinated Remedy Program, to which FCA US is committed, “ensures the inflators will be recalled and replaced before they become dangerous, giving vehicle owners sufficient time to have them replaced before they pose a danger to vehicle occupants.”

Customers with questions or concerns may call 1-800-853-1403."

^ That's exactly what I was thinking. As Jeepers we have been known to hose the Jeep out, it gets rained on sometimes, we mud, we leave it out in the sun, and I'm sure someone has had kids leave wet beach towels in the back with the windows up at some point - steaming the whole Jeep up inside (been there with my TJ, but not the JKU yet).

I got a notification email from the Dealer to call them about a possible recall yesterday. I called today and they said my vehicle does not have any outstanding recalls. According to NHSTA site it does. Wtf? I guess I should call some other dealers and take a poll?

It'll take a few weeks before the dealers have it in the system. I knew about, and even printed out my recall for the heated mirrors and gave it to my dealer. He looked it over and scheduled me out a month, they didn't get notified until right before, and I think I rescheduled again for the next month before they had stuff to do it.

There's a recall number on your notice, ask the dealer what recall they are at on the computer. I circled where it is from the online screen i get when using jeep.com to look it up.

Enter your VIN to see if your on the recall.

https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/
Yes.. however, from the site itself..

"What this VIN search tool does NOT cover:
Completed safety recall information
Manufacturer customer service or other non-safety recall campaigns
International vehicles
Very recently announced safety recalls for which not all VINs have been identified
Safety recalls that are more than 15 years old (except where a manufacturer offers more coverage)
Safety recalls conducted by small vehicle manufacturers, including some ultra-luxury brands and specialty applications"

I was at the stealership yesterday inquiring about my clock spring I ordered 3 weeks ago, when I ordered it they said it would only take 4 days to get it, then I mentioned it is still under warranty, shouldn't have done that. Yesterday I was told my order was cancelled and all the clock springs in stock are recalled and new ones are on the way, no time table, I have 4 open recalls on my 07 JK, none of which are the airbag. So Now I am driving around in a jeep that the airbag most likely doesn't work on, listening to the crunching sound the clock spring makes when I turn the wheel, with no horn because I had to disconnect it due to the clock spring messing up and me driving around with my horn going on and off randomly, disconnecting the horn disabled my cruise control as well. Dealerships cannot order the clock spring now that it's on recall, they will be given a set number and I will get this problem fixed eventually... F@#king Chrysler!

FCA and the Cerberus mess that preceded it have a habit of letting technician issues get out of hand, rather than nipping them in the bud. Clock spring failure is no exception.

If you have paid for clock doing replacement in the past Chrysler will reimburse the costs. Go to www.fcarecallreimbursement.com and enter your information. You're required to submit scanned copies of your repair order and receipt proving payment.

Now the fun begins for me. I bought one from my local dealer last March when mine failed. I installed it myself, so I can hear the corporate gears grinding.

I just looked up my '12 on the safercar.gov website and the recall for the passenger side airbag was just posted on July 1st.
SUMMARY:

THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG INFLATOR HOUSING MAY RUPTURE WHILE DEPLOYING DURING A CRASH. THE POTENTIAL FOR SUCH RUPTURES MAY OCCUR IN SOME OF THE SUBJECT AIRBAG INFLATORS AFTER SEVERAL YEARS OF EXPOSURE TO PERSISTENT CONDITIONS OF HIGH ABSOLUTE HUMIDITY AND/OR HEAT AGING.
SAFETY RISK:

IN THE EVENT OF A FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG INFLATOR RUPTURE, METAL FRAGMENT(S) COULD PASS THROUGH THE AIRBAG CUSHION MATERIAL, WHICH MAY RESULT IN ADDITIONAL INJURY OR DEATH TO VEHICLE OCCUPANTS.
REMEDY:

THE PASSENGER AIRBAG INFLATOR MUST BE REPLACED.
RECALL STATUS:

Recall INCOMPLETE. Remedy not yet available

MANUFACTURER NOTES:

Took mine in this morning for the clock spring recall thing and something about tow bar recall. When i got there they informed me about the passenger side airbag and then informed me there were no parts available. They also have no idea when said parts will be available.
