Jeep wrangler theft

Hi All,

I was just wondering what your opinions are on this subject.

I removed my doors for the first time (which is so awesome to drive like that)

and I drove downtown to work this morning. top is off as well.

Do you think it is more likely for it to get stolen ?

My thought is, better of leaving everything open including the glove box and center case, like that if a thief tried, nothing gets forced in or broken

as to where i have my soft top on, it might get sliced for breaking and entering

even in cold snowy canadian winter, is it better to leave the doors unlocked at all time to prevent thieves from breaking windoes or the hard top ?

any feedback would be greatly appreciated !

thanks !

If somebody wants to steal your rig, they are going to.

Def leave the doors unlocked, I always do.

Well I am not sure about the actual theft of the vehicle because I am not sure how it easy it would be to steal a Jeep. About anyone taking anything from inside your vehicle; I would guess it would depend on where you park. Is it highly populated? If it is I would lock my console and glove compartment. A theif doesn't want to attract attention and would rather take something quickly and leave. If they are prying on your console or glove box someone might be more likely to notice and call authorities, and they might not be able to gain entry into the compartments. I have had my doors off and top down and leave my glove and console locked. I have never had a problem. I do know that locked doors at night ect are deterrent. Even if it is cold out I would say locked doors are a good option because they might not want to spend time in the snow and cold trying to gain entry. If they really want to get in nothing will really stop them, but I would take my chances and keep my Jeep locked. Also I found this:
STEERING WHEEL LOCK WITH ALARM - JCWhitney
I don't have one but you might be interested! Hope this helps but do whatever you feel the most comfortable with.

When the soft top is on, I don't lock my doors. If they want in all they have to do is either unzip or slash my soft top windows, so I figure it's not worth it. When the hard tops on though, I do lock it up.

I also, don't keep anything of real value in it.

With a soft top.. what's the difference if the doors are off? I've been driving doors off all summer. That's what we have insurance for anyway.

There was a guy in california that was finally caught after stealing over 300 jeeps, one of them was my buddys, they watched him later on the camera, less than 3 minutes after my buddy got out of his jeep it was driving away. If someone wants the jeep they will get it. I got an proximity alarm on mine after his incident ( CODE alarm), and when it is triggered by movement outside of the jeep or if someone reaches in alarm will sound and fuel shut off automaticaly engages. i roll with half doors a lot no windows and a soft top or no top, and i just lock up my tuffy consol and glove box. i would say keep doors unlocked to save damage if someone does try. i always try to park in heavy populated areas and if at night under lights. its a shame that we have to worry about that kind of stuff all the time. i just like to play it save and get an alarm but thats just me.

thanks you all for those responses... what about having it engraved with sherlock ?

does it really help keep thieves away ? more than alarm systems??

The only problem with that is that unless you have receipts for EVERYTHING you put on your Jeep Insurance won't pay for any of it.

Say for example you have a Rig with $20,000 invested into and it gets stolen. Unless you have ALL the receipts for that stuff, your insurance company will only pay the base model value lets just say for example $5,000.

So that would mean you'd still be out $15,000... So keep your receipts, just sayin

But you can't totally prevent theft of any vehicle, and in the case it's stolen that's what your insurance is for. And like I said.. with a soft top.. you're one zip away from entry.. in which case, doors on or off isn't an issue.

I know I'm just warning peoples, I recently had a talk with my insurance company about if they would replace my lift, tires, ect... if I got into an accident, and they also provided me with that little insurance info

Yeah, it's definitely one of the drawbacks with modified vehicles. That's why I try and keep all the factory stuff I can find space for when I take it off so in case of an accident I can swap out whatever they won't pay for before it's scrapped.

Actually, this friday night, I stayed at my cousin's in Baltimore City w/ the doors off/top down. When I walked to my jeep in the morning, I saw that my center console was flipped open and half of the stuff that was in there was on my passenger seat. I looked through the stuff, and everything was still there. It was all little stuff that would barely have any value to anyone else (dental floss, gum, baseball cap, etc). When I went to put it all back in the console, I realized that the little tray insert wasn't there. I looked all around for it, and it was nowhere to be found. I put all my stuff back in and drove away. A couple minutes later, I realized that they took the tray because it had about $2 in change. They took the whole tray thing just to get the change, and dumped everything else out of it

Luckily, I took my ipod and put it in the little stowage compartment in the back and locked the gate. I found that to be the safest place to keep stuff. Most thieves don't know about it, and it's really tough to open when the gate is locked.

I would like to add that most insurance companies will up pay up to a grand
or two for un-endorsed customizations. It is a good idea to call your company to endorse any customizations you feel you would loose out on if you had to file a claim for damage or loss. These types of Endorsements are usually very cheap.

I have Geico. Whenever I add something, for instance when I added my cb, I drive to my local insurance rep's office, they add it to my Jeep's info, and it's all good. They told me when I first got the Jeep, that if I wanted it covered, bring it in for them.

I had mine in my small town open, top down doors off, left the council open but locked the glove box--THEY BROKE INTO IT!!! $300 to fix. Get an alarm, it doesn't stop anyone from breaking into it but it will maybe make them think twice and move onto he next car

While we're on this subject ... what are the chances somebody would steal the factory radio? I know it's supposedly coded to the truck and all that ... but do they know that?

I ask because I've got the REQ 6 disc MP3 factory radio and upgraded Infinity speaker system (and love it). I've had the doors and top off a couple weekends but always bolt it back up (hard top and all) before Monday morning when I got back to work in the city.

You don't mention where in Canada you live -- that might make a difference. I live in Ottawa and have not had doors on since April (09 JK Unlimited). I have never had a problem and I regularly park at night in some sketchy neigbourhoods (Vanier). I always lock the glovebox since I keep a big shiny f*** off knife in there and I lock the console because I usually have a couple extra packs of smokes in there and don't want either stolen. In my job, I work with criminals, who steal to support drug habits. MANY of them steal from cars, but MOST of them only enter cars that are not locked for the Tim Horton's money sitting in the ashtray. The only thing in my Jeep "exposed" is a pair of Jeans and a towel in case it gets too cold or too wet. So far they haven't gone anywhere.

On the other hand, a friend at work who is from England told me you could never do that there. He said in 5 mins. vandals would destroy the interior just for fun.

I bought a Jeep because the roof and doors come off. So far the Jeep gods have smiled on me, and I hope they keep smiling because I cant bear to put the doors back on. This week I'm having the floors sprayed with Line-X and throwing out the carpets once and for all. Your Canadian, so you can appreciate what it means when I tell you my goal is to make it to November 1st without doors!
