When driving on the beach with loose or hard packed sand, what do you use 4Hi or 4Lo? And in what gear 1st 2nd or Drive?

I just don't want to mess anything up with the trans or transfer case

Thanks in advance

I generally run 2wd on hardpack, and switch into 4-hi for deep soft patches. Back in April I did Padre Island to Mansfield (~120 mi) in my F-150 nearly entirely in 2WD with the tires deflated to 25 psi, only used 4-hi in a few spots. It really just comes down to preference, tire type, inflation pressure, etc.

For kicks, go play around. Use 2wd until you can't, then try 4-hi. If that won't pull you out, bring a shovel and dig away. Test the limits of your vehicle/setup and your driving, sand is pretty forgiving.

4Hi and tires at at 18psi makes for an easy and enjoyable ride on 15 miles of the OBX.
I stay that way all week (or two) and have no issues.
Lots of other people get stuck.

(BTW: Been going since 1985)
