Indeed- hard to gain MPG and not get lighter. I like the "feel" of metal- but the reality is that for al of the reasons mentioned above an increase in plastic is de rigeur for automotive development these days.

BTW- I think a mesh backer on the grill should be standard. I need to do that mod- I've already got one minor stone dent in the radiator fins, and me no likey.

How in the world did you get a speeding ticket in a TJ? Doing 40 in a 20 zone? heh... I have both a TJ (03) and a newb JKUR (13) and I fine myself driving waaaaaay to fast in the JK. Probably because I can't hear/feel the hum of the engine.

The JK has nice high-end torque/power to pass people on the highway, but it doesn't take off the line as well as the TJ.

I was a little disappointed that the JK grill is plastic.

Off topic but whatever...

Ballastic Kevlar is really heavy, really expensive, and does not stop rifle rounds. Check bulletproofme.com for prices to see.

Cops wear it because its easier to wear then steel or ceramic plate that does stop rifle rounds.

I'm not sure why you would want it on your Jeep though...

Current model military 'Jeeps' do have armor, but it's a combination of multiple types working together.

End of off-topic...

I'm coming from a 1997 Sahara and was looking at the 2013 Wranglers. Was also shocked to see plastic grill, and plastic (or at least plastic covered) bumpers. Quite a change from my metal grill and steel front/rear bumpers. I understand some of the luxury upgrades (electric locks, windows, cruise control, etc.) but plastic bumpers/grills seem to be a cheapening of the brand.

That said, I can see how the plastic grill might be more durable, but I still don't agree with the plastic bumpers.
