JK Navteq Update: Both Arms, Legs, Hold your Hat and Scarf

I just got done purchasing the NAVTEQ update for the super duper radio in my 08 Rubicon. I got a set of two DVDs in the mail today titled "It's now in your hands" question is, after paying the fee, I'm wondering what the hell is in my hands now!

Hold on to both your arms, legs, your hat and scarf(s): The price was ding ding ding....kachingggggggg

$199.00 + TAX

Plus they wanted to charge me shipping on top of that when I tried to purchase on line. So I called them on the phone. I voiced my disgust several times about the price being what new units cost these days and told her to send that complaint up the line. I said that unless she had some kind of significant discount I was going to squeal like a pig.....sing like a canary...all over the internet about what a ripoff the upgrade is. I understand that Jeep has now gone with a different vendor for their Nav system garmin? Well, I hope it is a little more easy on the pocket book when it comes time to upgrade. I feel like something big just went up where the sun doesn't shine (much).

I'm not normally one to complain but being part of the IT industry and knowing what prices are like for upgrades, this one seems a lot over the top.

OUCH!

I'm also not one to run around with three year old maps either. So I got it in spite of the price. Now, until the cows come home, I'm squealing like a pig.

I learned my lesson 4 years ago. The hand held GPS are a lot better than in-dash. Don't know why, but I compared them side my side and the hand held had better directions and more options. I compared it to a Tom Tom.

That is the reason I am just fine with my Droid X with dash mount with free goggles map with turn by turn. Worked perfect on my trip and no cost for updates

I've been contemplating updating my map too. I'm not doing $200 a year. but $50 a year is OK with me, which means I can only upate every 4 years. I did get the offer in the mail too. Did they make a lot of updates where you live?

^^They are in the process of changing some roads in the city that I live. They built a second bridge across the river. That bridge is now open. When I drive across it, it shows me driving across the water on no road. So, no they didn't get that one yet. But I'm sure there are a lot of corrections made since the jeep was new. Mine was manufactured in May of 08 which means that the radio was probably manufactured in approximately Nov. of 07 or before. Three years with the same maps. I'm not going to spring for an update for some time now that my wallet has been drained so significantly. I agree with you that $50.00 per year would have been reasonable.

Mine Jeep was manufactured Nov '07. My map database was created the first quarter of '06. I'm guessing yours was the same.

It would be nice if Navteq would publish a map you could look at ahead of time and see what changes they made.

I'll be buying this one, or the next one - haven't made up my mind yet...

The radio updates are "free" and are put out by Harman Becker. The "current" version is 2.302. The Gracenotes database is also "free" and is at version 2057.

Too bad the maps aren't free too.

To see what versions you have you hit Menu, System Setup, System Information. It will show you your software version, Gracenotes database version, and map version.

I am not that high tech just yet. Started out with the TomTom910 and I really needed it! Pre-loaded with USA, Canada, and Europe. It was a life saver in Germany! Not to mention the 910 model was able to identify static speed cameras. Saved me a few times. Now all I use is my Sprint EVO. It has every corner of seven continents and yes, updates automatically.

At the price that Jeep charges for that unit, they should update it for free for life!

If you have an IPhone (and I think a droid) look at the MotionX gps app. It let's you download maps for areas you are going to that may not have cell coverage.

I use it on my trail rides to record our trip as it let's you export to google maps and google earth.

I have Copilot which lets you DL maps for N. America and Europe (I think) which is handy in Michigan's UP where cell phones pretty much have 2 modes: Low Battery and No Signal.

Between it and Motion X, I like Copilot more (by a nose).

Co-pilot for Droid has loadable maps. That's the only complaint I have with my Droid and Google navigation. Doesn't make sense to require cell service to download where you are.

*disclaimer. - I have not tried it yet, but it was featured in the top 3 for best navigation apps.
