JK Purchasing Advice

I currently have a 2005 TJ that my wife and I both love. We are expecting our first child so I'm wondering if it isn't time to move up to a JK Unlimited for a little more room and ease of loading the little one.

I'd like to know if there are any years and/or issues that I should watch out for and stay away from. I would eventually like to have 2 1/2-3 inches of lift (if I don't find one already lifted). It would be my daily driver and would see light trail duty in occasion. Also, what are good prices for years with reasonable mileage?

Thanks in advance.

I was looking for a clean used Jeep when I purchased mine. Shopped all around. Couldn't find a clean used one. Bought a new Unlimited and we are very happy with it.

The best deal IMO is to buy new if you have it in your budget. The JK's hold there value really well. It's not impossible to find a fair deal on a JK, but the 2012 and up have the 3.6 and better auto transmission. Probably can find a good deal on the 2013 models that dealers will be clearing out soon for the 2014 models. Good luck

I hadn't really thought about buying new because we'll be replacing my wife's 16 year old Blazer with a new vehicle for sure. I seriously doubt ill get a deal that would make it work.

I paid a little more than 36K for my original 2008 JKUR. Then in 2012 got a 2008 JKR for 20K... it was clean. That probably went for about 33K new. So, I would say that the jeep had held its value pretty well. We got the second one used because we just couldn't afford to swing a new one at the time we got it and my wife's car was beginning to cost us too much. I do most of the service on her jeep now and have managed to keep costs down nicely. I've done a brake job on it and replaced a rear axle seal, bearing and retainer ring. Next up is a new set of sneakers for hers at about $1K. These are things that you have to be aware of buying used.

The JK vs the JKU since we have both, I have to say that I like the JKU hands down over my wife's JK. Yes, hers is more peppy than mine because of the weight factor and hers has a much better turning radius both reasons that she loves her Rubicon. We just came back from Maine almost up into Canada. An almost 8 hour drive with 3000 lbs in tow. All of our camping gear and lots of fun things that we take alone for weeks at a time when we go. That wouldn't be possible with a two door. When I got the 4 door, my son was 12. It was a great replacement for my soccer dad caravan and worked extremely well as a family vehicle. I still wouldn't trade it in for a two door. Whatever falls off of it, I will upgrade/fix/replace. It has taken a licking from me and is still ticking. I'm not real easy on my vehicles but then again I don't abuse them as much as some do offroading. So, as a family vehicle I highly rate the four door. It is hard to go wrong with it and I got my wife's endorsement from the getgo on it. I've had so much fun driving it that she eventually got one 5 years after I got mine. She loves hers.

Thanks for all the good words about the JKU. That's exactly what im looking at. The good thing is if the numbers worked I wouldn't have to do much wife convincing. She loves our TJ as much as I do. So I've got that going for me. It's all a numbers thing and finding one that's clean.
