JK Unlimited Fuel Tank Size

I recently bought a 2013 Sahara Unlimited and both times I've filled up the tank it only takes 18.5 gallons. I've ran it well after the light comes on and the needle is buried on E but it still only takes 18.5 - 18.75 gallons, the window sticker says it's suppose to have the 22.5 gallon tank. I took it to the dealer and he dropped the tank to check the part number and he said it comes back as the 22.5 gallon tank and the reason I can only get 18.5 gallons in it is because the newer Jeeps come with a 4 -5 gallon reserve so you never run out of gas.... Has anyone else ever heard this?

Thanks,
Brian

get a 1 gallon gas can and drive around until you run out keeping close to an area with a gas station. dump the gallon in and go fill up. It is very common for your ight and needle to be on e when you have 3 or 4 gallons left. I would not make a habit out of running it out of fuel but one time won't hurt anything. I have not done it on my wrangler yet but will at some point to see what the actually capacity is. Heck my daughter seems to make a habit of running her subaru out of gas lol.

I have the same experience I usually go about 40-50 miles once the light goes on and still have never filled more then 18ish gallons. I am ok with it, at this point I know that with average driving I have about 100 miles worse case once the light goes on.

most new cars still have 3-5 gallons of gas left after the gas light comes on. My wife pushes her cars to the brink all the time. She will drive around for a week with the gas light on.. Drives me crazy.
So yes- 22.5 gallon tank..

According to Chrysler you have approx. 2-3 gals. reserve in the tank when you hit empty. Approximate is the key word. Some seem to have less some have more when the light goes on. Try not to run it down that low, although there is gas in a reservoir built into the fuel pump so that if you "run out" of gas the fuel pump won't overheat. Fuel is first pumped into the reservoir then it is then pumped through the lines into the system. The reservoir keeps filling. If there's no gas in the tank the reservoir maintains fuel and gas is no longer moved through the system and you're technically out of gas.

If you watch the DTE it will read down to about 20 miles and then change to LOW FUEL. I pushed it once to the point that when I filled up it took 21.8 gal.:banghead: Too close for my likeing. Never did it again. When it hits the point that it says LOW FUEL, I fill up. I try not to let it get even that close. Rule of thumb: Fill at a 1/2 tank. That way it does not hurt so bad$$$$:eek:

I did something this week that I haven't done in quite a while....I read the owners manual. Good reading. I see in it that you have 2.8 gallons left in the tank when the light comes on and you get the chime. That's a JKU sport. Don't know if it's different for a 2 door model, or gear ratios.

Of course, I had to order the manual ahead of time to be able to read it. I even got to look at pictures....

JK = 18.6 gallons; JKU = 22.5 gallons

Some TJ's had a 19 gallon tank, both mine did.

Cut&Paste from my JKU Sport's build sheet:

NF5S 22.5 Gallon Fuel Tank

and yes the low fuel light comes on at about 18.5 gallons. The two reasons I have heard is that; one, they don't want you running out of gas in the middle of nowhere, and two, the fuel acts as coolant for the fuel pump...

I always make a mental note of the odometer when the light comes on. I know I have 45-50 more miles until I hit that mystery reserve but I don't want to count on it. I really should go out and fill up my gas can and see how far till it just stops. That would be good to know. I do know that there must me more gas in there as I too will only get 18.5 or so on a fill up when the light is on.

Hey, I just found another excuse to drive the Jeep. Wa-hoo!

I have a 2013 Wrangler Sport JK 2 Door and just took the time to look at the original window sticker. It says 18.6 gal tank. Owner's manual says the 4 door is 22.5 gal tank.
