2012 JKU Rubicon vs G550

As I was filling out the paperwork to pick up the JKUR I had ordered I picked up the September issue of Car & Driver. To my surprise there was a comparison article. 2012 JKUR vs 2012 G550.
Read the article. The G wagon is very cool but the Rubicon is beats it hands down.

I think I'll take a redone Defender instead...with AC. The G500 looks pretty cool though.

You can have it made still, i dont think it was ever really meant to be a main production item by ford. But you can still buy a gt500 and have them do it for extra

Nice article. Love this sentence :
The introduction of the Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen into the U.S. market as a 2002 model has created the only known link between American auto journalists, the Russian mafia, and society housewives.
( Comrade, I'll have one black on black - sportski )

I remember the first one and I think it had 540 hp, then I think the following year it was sort of "obsolete" because then the "standard" Shelby was making 540 hp or something...

Nice cars. I wouldn't mind having one of the new Boss 302s.

I almost bought a 2012 Dodge Charger R/T while I was at the stealership to order my Rubicon. There was a really sweet one sitting on the showroom floor; black, chrome wheels, leather, etc. It was pretty loaded up and STILL cheaper than the Rubicon!

I gotta be honest, if I'd lived in a climate where it didn't snow, I would've driven off in that Charger instead of ordering the Rubicon.

I had never seen the 2 dr version of a G wagon. interesting, reminds me of a Jimny. But yeah the $$$ involved in that kinda purchase is crazy. Get a JKUR and an SRT Grand Cherokee. Then you can stay in the jeep family

OK guys, so here's the deal. I can get a 2005 G500 84k miles for $32,000, warranty expired. OR I can stick with my 2011 JK Sahara with 8000 miles and still under full warranty. I think I'll stick with the JK and dream of the G, at least for now.

I had a 97 NAS D90 until my first son was born. I wish I was able to hold on to it. Great vehicle.

I have both a 2008 G500 and a 2012JKUR. I love them both for very different reasons. I refuse to drive a 'car' so the G serves as my luxury vehicle and family hauler and luxury pick up truck at times. The barn door in back makes it user friendly and it will carry a ton of cargo. The Rubi is my daily driver and my cabin vehicle. Once we unload the groceries the top and doors come off, and it's off-road time in the Sierras. Neither is cheap to maintain but life is short and I like them both.

It probably got lost among the piles of BMW checks on their desks

If you want a Jeep still just buy a older TJ or CJ for wheeling adventures and tow it with the G500.

neither is cheap to maintain ... I'm pretty certain that the G is many times more expensive to maintain.
Don't get me wrong I love the G and have thought about getting one for years.
As a matter of fact, funny enough last week my neighbor just bought a 2013 G550 while we bought our 2013JKUR 2 days ago.

If Mercedes offered lifetime warranty I'd be back buying their cars again. I've only been leasing up until this JK because new cars just have way too many problems once warranty expires and the fixes are getting ridiculously expensive nowadays.

You guys are great! I expected to get lots of negative comments about the G 500 since this is a Jeep Wrangler Forum. Instead, the replies have been extremely thoughtful, informative and helpful. I guess the two vehicles have much in common. If I didn't have a Mini Cooper convertible, I would probably buy the used G and keep the Wrangler as well....but I can't part with the sporty little mini convertible. I drove the Wrangler today and really enjoyed it. I'm going to stick with Wrangler for now. Maybe next year I'll buy the G. With the economy as it is, that is the safest thing to do, I suppose. Thanks again for all the comments!

I always wanted a NAS Defender. There so cool. I looked into it but its gonna have to wait for another time. Can't believe that 97 costs more now than it did back when it was new.

I was within inches of buying a NAS D90 about 3 weeks ago, and when I didn't I got nearly as close to buying an '86 import--diesel, right hand drive, oodles of awesome. Someday.

OMG I didn't know what a Defender was until your posts drove me to google it. It is cooler than the G. I saw one featured in the new James Bond movie, Skyfall. Love this car!

The earlier G's, especially the 2 doors, were far more similar to Jeeps. Low gearing, removable tops etc. They were also incredibly slow. You would not want to drive one on the freeway. They were also not sold in the US.

When the G's moved more into the high end luxury class, you still couldn't get them in the US for a time, except through a gray market importer and then you'd be paying six figures for one. When MB decided to finally bring them here from the factory at around 80k a pop at the time, they'd long since ceased to be a competitor to even the most expensive offerings from Jeep, which were and are less than half the price. More in line with the H1 at the time, or the Range Rover.

As for their capabilities? If I were a billionaire and had no qualms about dinging up a $100k truck, I'd take a G-wagen anywhere. I have no doubt that stock they are as capable a vehicle as exists off the showroom floor, right up with a Rubicon, most offerings from Land Rover, and some cool stuff from Japan that we don't get here (Nissan Patrol for example).

But I suspect few of us here have that kind of disposable income for a vehicle. If I ever decide to become an international arms dealer though, I'll have a fleet of them, complete with bullet proof glass.

Oh, and if I could afford a Defender 90, I'd have one right now.

The Defender and the Patrol and the old G 500s all look so much like a Wrangler. Did they all copy Wrangler, or did Wrangler copy them? Who was first with this design?
