JK Wrangler Unlimited Sport build ideas

Hi guys, I am new to the forum so I just wanted to get some input from the more established Jeep owners. First, I am completely new to the Jeep world. Came over from mustangs and F-150s so forgive me for being a newb...

Looking at picking up a 2013 Wrangler Unlimited Sport. Ideally I want the Rubi but budget and availability hinder that. I believe this truck has the 3.21 gears so it is as basic as you can get (anyone got a suggestion on how I can look the specifications up? Picking it up from a Ford dealer).

Ideally, I am going for look and functionality. I have my heart set on probably 17" or 18" rims with a 35" inch tires with a 2.5" TeraFlex lift. I have an ATX wheel picked out thats about 29 pounds for the wheel and will probably slap on some Mickey Thomsons if the price is right (open to suggestions). I saw a post from another user earlier about his 2014 Sahara and read all of the links. Great stuff; but my concern was will this set up break down frequently? More precisely, am I walking myself down a path where I have to put more back into the truck to fix parts that will break?

Driving will be mostly streets and highways here in AZ (think flat) with the occasional light-moderate off-roading on trails in the desert. I do not plan on doing any extreme rock climbing. Maybe one day with a Rubi, but not this rig.

Any input on the build? How would you tweek it? Looking to spend right around $2,000.00 with a firm max of $3,000.00 on initial mods if they're worth the extra dough.

Thanks for all of the help!!!

If it has the max tow package it will come with 3.73 gears.

Hi JeepersKreepers,

Any way I can search the internet with the VIN to see what it was built with? Thank you!

I come from F150s and Mustangs too. Go drive a lifted Wrangler before you do it. I did and hated them. I'm sure many love them but it's not my cup of tea. I'll be driving mine a lot so I'm only doing the springs and shocks from a JKRU to my 2 door for a very slight lift.

Call a Jeep dealer and ask them to run your vin for recalls and options to check gearing. It only takes the last 8 digits of the vin.

Like Cyclone said, I think you have to call a dealer with the last 8 of your VIN to get that info.

Cyclone, thanks for the post. I had the fortune of driving a lifted '12 Rubi with 35" tires (buddys truck) for a weekend and loved it. But thank you for the heads-up. You're right its always best to drive before you buy.

Jeeper, which leveling kit did you put on your Jeep? Its a really nice rig. I see you are running some 33" inch tires. Do you think you could fit 35s?

Thank you both for the info. I have an email into a Jeep dealer already.

Welcome from Scottsdale! You can conquer a good number of AZ trails on 33s. I would not put 35s on a Jeep if it has 3.21 - you will dislike life and freeway on ramps and never want to drive further north than Scottsdale lol.

I am running the Teraflex spacer leveling kit. I have the stock springs (17/59) on mine. The 33" tires fit before I lifted it and would only scrub on a full right turn. I'm sure the 35" tires would fit but the 33" tires fill up the fender well nicely with the small lift that I have. A 35" tire will not fit on the factory rear tire carrier without adjusting the 3rd brake light.

you will want 373 gears either way you go. I just bought my 2015 jku 4 days ago or so and it came with 373s... theres a huge difference in power to the wheels with the 373s vs the 321s... the 321s are junk.

With a 3k budget, it's doable. Try to stay at 2300 for wheels/tires and you'll have enough for the lift.

Thank you everyone for the responses.

Happy to report that it does the max tow package so it has the 3.73 gears.

So pretty much narrowed it down. From everything I have read, Teraflex is the way to go for the lift.

Teraflex Wrangler 2.5 in. Performance Budget Boost w/Shocks 1255200 (07-14 Wrangler JK) - Free Shipping

Thinking of that lift or is it worth the extra $200.00 to get the springs as well?

And one last question, with the 3.73 gears and 35" inch tires w/ 2.5 lift, will I have any issues with rubbing? Any power loss? If anyone has a similar set up, I'd love to see some pics.

I'll probably put the stock tires and rims on craigslist and hope to get a few dollars out of those. If anyone in Scottsdale is looking for some stock Sport wheels (~10k wear on tires, still great shape), send me a message and we can work out a price once the new wheels come in.

Thank you everyone again!

I would go with Rancho 9000 shocks if you were looking to replace them. Especially since they are on sale for September and October.
