It's made up on the forum. JKU (unlimited) JKR (rubicon) JKS (sahara) JKUR (unlimited rubicon), etc. As I mentioned it's not Chrysler designations. Even the JK was just a designation from Chrysler that doesn't have a specific meaning. Maybe the "J" is for Jeep, but Chrysler won't admit to it.

JK is the model nominclature not sure where it comes from but thats what this series 07-present are callled the U means unlimited meaning 4 door and R stands for Rubicon, so if you have a 4 door jeep that is a rubicon then you would say JKUR if you have a 2 door then it's JKR. sahara and sports are not really refered to in that manner

No, it is just a "JK".
Everything else is made up by us fine folks on the interwebz. Technically, there is no such think as a JKU, or a JKUR, etc....

From my build sheet..

Body Model JK J L 72

So JK is part of the body code.

It's kind of the same thing as calling a Skyline an R32/R33/R34, or a 240SX/Silvia an S-14/S-15, or an AE86, etc. Same general idea. It's part of the manufacturer's "code".

CJ (Civilian Jeep)
YJ (Yuppie Jeep)
TJ (True Jeep)
JK (Just Kidding)

Also, there is no such thing as an LJ (what many call the TJ Unlimited)...I can only assume it stands for Long Jeep?

True,

The letters in a Jeep's designation haven't meant anything to anyone other than the manufacturer since they stipped making the Jeep CJs and started calling them "Wranglers".

The CJ designation actually does mean "Civilian Jeep" since the first CJs were copies of WWII military Jeeps.

Sucks they wasted KJ on the liberty. I am used to JK now, but when they first came out it did throw me for awhile. I was so used to hearing and saying CJ YJ and TJ, that J...K... sounded weird.

LOL, obviously never owned a TJ. I LOVE my JK (and all the nice things it came with compared to my old TJ), but the JK lost some of it's "Jeepness". I still think that the TJ was the pentacle of Jeep design. Yes, I KNOW the JK is superior in all ways that truly count, but the mighty TJ reigns supreme. IMHO.
