Unhappy JKU 2012 Gas Mileage Help !

Worried First Jeep Wrangler owner here, I'd appreciate any advice......

I've owned it for 2.5 months now and it has 1200 miles. I drive mostly short city trips 99% and each tank gives me 260 miles so doing the math that means 11.5 miles per galon. Display usually reads 13.8miles per galon though.

I don't speed or go crazy but also don't drive like an old lady.

Is there maybe something wrong with the Jeep?

How are you calculating mpg? Are you starting at zero at fill up, then marking miles and dividing by the number of gallons pumped at next fill? Also, are you running the original factory tires?

Do not trust the computer to calculate MPG for you... even the one in my Subaru Impreza is way off. It says I averaged 21.5mpg on 300 miles... when I actually attained 26.4mpg.

Sounds about right, I have the same average mileage. What gears you have auto or manual transmission.

Oh and by the way that stupid fuel mile meter is useless. IMO. I get low 14ish in town just filled up today $59.38 going to check my mileage the old way. But a Jeep is not going to get good gas mileage.

If its stock that is way off. I was getting 20.6 stock. Maybe the computer is off. At your next fill up reset your trip gauge. Then at your next fill up after that divide the number of miles on your trip gauge by the amount of gallons you put in.

The computer is close. I look at my gallons on the pump after I fill up. It puts in about 15-16 so i have about 2-3 gallons in the tank When it says 40 miles DTE (drive to empty) (40 is also when the light comes on) so that's averaging about 14 mpg. I trust the DTE on the display down till it says "Lo" haha. But it says Lo at about 10-15 miles left. I try to fill up at that.

Just hand calculate it. Shouldnt be getting anything less than 16mpg I would think. Keep A/C low, shift early.

Sorry, should have specified:

JKU Sport, Auto trans, 3.21, stock 17" wheels, only mod is put on rubicon's tires, same size as stock 255/75R17.

I have a 2012 Rubi. All stock and MT. Getting around 19-20 mpg. So I think your 13 is pretty low but as many say, buy a Jeep don't expect great gas mileage.

Thank you all for your replies!

I always reset the trip gauge at fill up and check mileage against galons filled in, that's how I know I am getting less than 12 miles per galon. I was prepared to get 15-16mpg but gotta admit getting 12mpg is getting in the way of really enjoying my Jeep 100%. I guess it will just take me sometime to get over it.

I do mostly city driving and get around 17 mpg.

I'm not actually sure what I'd need to do to get my Rubicon down to 11 mpg. Between commuting over hills, urban driving and trail running I wouldn't say my driving is geared towards economy...I suppose if I revved it out from light to light I could manage it...I do know I'd need to work at it though.

You will get slightly less MPG with the mud terrain tires than the HWY tread you had stock...I can't remember what mag did a test on that a few years back and I think it was about 1-1.5 less per gallon. Around the city I get about 12.5 but I live in a slightly hilly area.. as soon as I am in the 'flat" part of the city I get about 14-15mpg. I am getting over 20 mpg when on the hwy...
I have a JKU with 255/75/17 tires, hard top, winch and after market bumpers.

Short city trips are the worst for gas mileage.

Wife's Forester would get as low as 11mpg when she'd drive 1 mile each way to work and never take it out anywhere else.

It's because your commutes are so short, I guarantee it. There's nothing wrong with your jeep.

Wow that is low. When you get a chance take it out for a long drive and see what you get. I just did a trip to the mountains this past weekend hiking and my trip meter is showing 22.4.

Its not the tires. I have 33x12.5 and Im getting 18 mpg. Especially if he has 3.21s. I would say there's an issue

Mine is still breaking in, and on a moderate 2 lane drive was getting almost 23, but dropped to 22.2 for the days travels. Mine has less than 1000 miles and I know it is still tight and breaking in.

I would have a mechanic look at it, or do a simple coast down test. Find a pretty good sized hill to drive down and let the Jeep COAST down the hill. If it gains speed, your brakes are not dragging and there is another issue. If it maintains the same speed or gains in speed, the brakes should not be your problem.

I have a hill I go down at least 3 times a week. In My VW TDI, I gain about 5 mph from what I started at. My Wrangler down the same hill gains little if any and some of that is due to wind resistance. I do this almost every time I go down this hill, partly to save a few ounces of fuel, and partly as a health check for my vehicles.

He takes short commutes everyday. There's nothing wrong with his jeep.

Things that will effect gas mileage:

Driving with windows down, but rear/side windows in
Driving with sunrider open, but rear/side windows in
Driving with freedom panels removed
Using cheap gas
Low tire air pressure (28psi seems to have best ride, but 35psi for MPG)

Exactly... short trips every day will KILL your gas mileage. Not only that, but not letting the engine reach operating temperature can also cause other problems internally with the engine. It's recommended to go out and take a longer trip from time to time and really warm that engine up.

Just picked up my 2012 wrangler unlimited, auto, 3.21 rear. 2700 miles on it. Avg. 22 highway mpg and 18 mpg on my 10 mile commute to work. You should be getting better mpg with the 3.21 rear. The 4.10 Rubicons are getting that plus. I'm not sure what you can do to have it evaluated.

Sir. With all due respect. I was trying to give the OP ideas and things to check out that could be wrong.

As an ASE Certified mechanic I figured it was sound advice from someone that has worked in the industry since the early 70's.

I'd rather help.

I get negligible to no change in MPG using AC on or off.

 
I have gotten the same mileage with the top down and no AC as I do with the top down and running AC.


Short commutes and driving style are the likely culprits for the OP’s bad MPG.

Is the jeep a hard top? Are you running with the freedom tops off? When I still had my hardtop on it made a huge difference when I took the freedom tops off. Like averaging 18.3 to 16 MPG with them off.
