I think the legal tint for front side windows in Texas is 25%.
I'm wondering if anyone has tinted just the front side windows to get an even look across all side windows and what percentage?
IMO, all the hardtop rear windows are dark enough as is.
I had my front side windows tinted the 2nd day of ownership. I simply told the shop to match the factory tint on the rears. Any decent shop should be able to do that. If they tell you they can't, look elsewhere.
Yeah I'm sure they can match no problem.
I just want to make sure it VISUALLY matches.
When you darken the front windows, it will block more light from getting to the rear, making the rears appear darker than before.
So I was just curious what percent others may have found works best.
Maybe the darkening effect isn't really that noticeable.
the rears are just privacy glass and have no tint "protection". you can do clears for that area but yes... a decent shop can match oem privacy glass if you just want to do the front.
By protection, do you mean from heat?
I figured that much. Around here, you're stepping into an oven regardless. LOL
I guess I could always add clear later if I felt I needed it.

The rear windows are 18% according to my departments tint meters. Ga law limits the tint on the front windows to 32% so that is what I went with on the front. It's a little lighter than the rear windows.
@d2mini yessir! the heat and uv protection. prior to my windows being tinted, my neoprene arm rest cover didn't last a year from its original color. I have medium tint over my privacy glass and it made it more difficult to see especially at night. I want to redo it to clear but ceramic tint is pretty expensive.
I have a 4 door and have only tinted the two front side windows, and the windshield. The side windows are 30% and the front is Air Blue 78%, which is amazing for cutting out the Florida heat.
I did notice the heat difference between the rear side windows and the front in that while the tinted windows are warm to the touch, the rear non-tinted windows get extremely hot. Once summer comes and I get around to putting the hard top back on I'll have the shop end up tinting the rear side windows and the hard top.
Had mine done the first week at 25%. You're right in that it seemed to even out the appearance of the tinted windows from front to back. After almost a year of having them tinted a DPS office pulled me over to tell me my front windows were to dark in North Houston. Has a local Houston Cop check and he told me they are fine.
Just got my '17 JKU done. 20% on both fronts looks very good to me. That is here in PA and I too have had no issues over the years. The old VW Sportwagen had 20% all the way around as well.
If you're reading this from New York state, I have good news and bad news:
The bad news is:
There is a new law going into affect that front side window tint is going to become part of the state inspection process. Since it's illegal to have any tint, your vehicle will not pass inspection.
The good news is:
We can just take our doors off and get it inspected, which is what I plan on doing this May when the time comes.
I don't worry about the law and never have. 25 years of driving with illegal tint in states that care and I never got a ticket. If you get pulled over, your front window gets rolled down right away and the fuzz doesn't notice it anyway. Nobody cares these days and if they do you just got extremely unlucky. Fortunately, I live in states that don't inspect at all, but I like the doors off idea. With all the nutjobs running around doing nefarious shiznit are we really worried about some dude that wants his ride to look cool and stay cooler with tint? A reputable tint shop can match your hard top windows almost perfectly. I truly can't tell the difference with mine.
Probably older than you RubiSS. Bringin it back because the way I type is far out man.
