Jeeps, made by Chrysler, are very expensive in China and are a huge status symbol.
The Jeep brand of clothing (liscenced there) is also high end.
To get a new, Toledo-made JKU over there is north of $100K.
Plus their market is growing fast, so that's why corporate is looking at how to make Jeeps there for sale there.
Buick also enjoys a high-end reputation there too.
Edit: adding a link about the $180K Jeep, lol. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-0...s-tariffs.html
Edit 2: I can't find the one with the rich boy Jeep parked in front of the designer clothing store (the JKU). Maybe it's on my phone.
Edit 3: Here it is in another context (trade and tarriffs) http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/09/bu...anted=all&_r=0
Anyway, my oldest works there, and thinks the knock-offs are funny.
