If you do a search you'll find a couple of long threads on the topic. My '13 looks the same. It seems that most '13's come through exactly like ours. Some better, some worse. After I discovered mine like this the dealership owner and I looked at every one on his lot... all the same.
The driveshaft is not painted/covered. That's normal. The steering knuckles, and usually part of the rear suspension also, are just not properly finished. But they won't actually rust through either.

You can paint the suspension parts, I'm going to use POR15 when the weather warms a bit more. Don't paint the drive shaft, you could potentially throw the balance off.

Welcome to the dirty side of JK ownership.

for those that don't know it is actually normal for those parts to be rusty. It does not hurt anything.

Well, for the front knuckles, ya just have to turn the wheel left or right and look past the fenders. You'll see it right away... Chances are that the dealer will know about it though. Mine did.

For the drive shaft, that's true, it's not prepped. For the other parts, it's just sloppy workmanship. Older JK's don't seem to show it on the steering parts as bad, and if you look at the 13's close up, you can see where parts of the knuckles were masked off... Old school, crap quality work...

It is normal. Do you think your axles are kept in a controlled environment until they are installed.

They aren't.

They are built, put on a rack, racks stack up, under a covered roof, shipped by rail car to factory, stored outside for a short time until brought in. This trip takes several months. How many times does it come in confact with moisture.

It has nothing to do with sloppy workmanshipt (not saying there is not plenty of that going around on a jeep) but the items that are rusted are cast iron and that is just what happens. I have been driving and owning vehicles since the early 70's and that is what happens to cast iron parts. Some cars have nice aluminum parts that don't rust underneath. Some schools of thought say that the oxide is actually acting as a protective barrier.

No this is not normal! I have a new 2013. Mine was built in March of this year. I have no rust under mine at all. It is also completely painted black in color and looks new. There is a thread in here showing some new jeeps in I believe New York at a show. They show the undercarriage on one and that is the way that mine looks no rust.
I would take it back, because you purchased a new Wrangler, not a used one that sat in water some place. If the Dealer gives you a bad time then call the factory, BBB and attorney Generals office for help!

Your under carriage looks terrible! It should not look that way. I had a new 2012 and now a new 2013 and neither had any rust under them. In fact they both looked professionally painted in Black.
I find it very hard to believe that a Repeatable Dealer would deliver one to you looking that way and describe it as being new.
There are some that will try to tell you that this is normal, because theirs looks this way, well they should have taken theirs back to there Dealer for another one.

The only rust that's normal is the drive shaft. The other areas are supposed to be coated.

Any exposed metal is going to have surface rust. Completely normal. Crawl under a few jeeps still on the dealer's lot to see there all the same.

/\ we have a real jeep superstar Here...watch out!! Instead of being a prick.. Why don't you simply repost a link to the previous thread?

Sorry about the rust issue man , yes jeepers claim that this is common. Although the 12 we have at the house almost has no rust build up like our 13's..
Just look at it like another mod.. If you are new to the jeep family you will get quite comfortable with that word.. Mod...

Like I posted before if you u want it done right simply fix it yourself. Get a rust remover and climb under that jeep and go to town. A little primer/paint & you'll be good as new.

Cheers,

So Fiat/Chrysler/Jeep shows you this then sells you one that doesn't look like it? It appears to be a 2013 quality issue. From the NY auto show thread.

Socal-troll continues his reign of unhelpful information..

Understand it's a show they want you to see the biggest and baddest. Commonly they will have a compete stock version of the vehicle and then 1 or 2 lifted monsters with thousands of dollars in aftermarket parts. I've worked with the sema guys for the past 7 years and its pretty entertaining watching them make these cars in show room condition.
If you want to know what your jeep was suppose to be Equip with the easiest & fastest way is the jeep website. Simply go online select wranglers and build one on the website.

The pictures from the auto show is of a new customized Jeep with Mopar/Jeep parts. They are selling you on Wrangler and Mopar parts.

I was pointing out that there is no rust on it except for the drive shaft. So Fiat/Chryser is setting a customer expectation that they are not meeting. Whether it hurts performance or not, customers like the original poster will be and should be upset their expectation was not met.

This never popped up on the 2012s and is for the 2013s. Even with the 2013s some look like the one from the auto show some look like the OPs which tells you Fiat/Chrysler has a finish quality issue or all of them would be rusty.

My 2012 a year old now, looks like the show picture (lack of rust wise) after I wash the sand, dirt or mud off the undercarriage.

Copy that jeeperz, I agree 100% that it is chrysler quality issue.. The real question is do I believe it will ever get resolved :-/... Sadly I feel it won't so I handled the issue myself

My 2012 is the same way. I know the rust won't hurt anything- but I still chalk this up as yet another reminder that Chrysler is just plain crap. And that they continue to leave Jeeps in the bottom of the quality pile. We're all so determined to live the "Its a Jeep mantra" that they can get away with crappy materials and quality control. We suckers are buying more now than ever. There is more rust on my 2012 California Jeep than there is on my 2002 Ford Ranger w/140K miles- and most of those miles were in Ohio. In rain and snow.
That said- I still love my Jeep. I get a little angry when I walk by my doors in the garage- the paint is chipping on the edges of both doors. Then I climb into my Jeep and hit the road in the sunshine with the top off; half doors on. Big grin on my face.
Yep; sucker.
