Just got my '12 Unlim. Several issues. Some help would be great.

Ordered my new Sahara Unlimited on Oct. 7, picked it up on Friday, 11/18 . First of all - I love it. Always wanted one. Excited to be part of the group.

However, there are a few issues that the dealer has not been able to assist with. Long story for another time, but for reasons I won't go into right now, the dealer I ended up going with is 3 hours from me. So I can't just "drop by." They have been sort-of responsive with trying to answer questions, but so far I have absolutely no confidence in any of the responses and I'm sure nobody at the dealership could answer the iPod question anyway.

1. When I got it home I found two black Torx bolts in the cup holder. They look just like the rear hard top bolts, but the Torx slot is larger. Not the door bolts either. Any ideas where I should start looking? Not sure if they're extra or if something isn't connected correctly. Dealer had no other idea.

2. Got the car home. Next day it rained. Came out the next morning and found these stains/marks on the bumper. Called the dealer and he said it was some "locktite" type lubricant, that was used on the spare tire bolts. The stains do not rub off easily. He suggested bug & tar remover. Any thoughts?

3. The dealer spent 15 minutes explaining the concept of "Electronic Stability Control" (yeah, 2004 called, they want their breakthrough idea back) then sent me on my way without explaining any other aspects of the vehicle. I had to fend for myself and I've never owned a 4x4, let alone a Jeep. Let alone an American or Chrysler made product. I got home and found a ton of bags stuffed in the glove compartment, some opened, some still sealed. Most of them are harnesses for handling the windows. I also found a box knife laying in the rear section along with the boxes that hold the storage bags. So what did the prep team not finish? Other than not telling me what anything is for, I mean? Anything here I have to deal with?

4. So I got the dual top group. And it comes with the soft top "installed" but as I'm sure you all know, there is a label indicating that this was only for delivery purposes, and to not operate the vehicle for long with both tops. Asked the dealer about this but he said "he didn't see any reason to remove the soft top until I felt like it." but some online info seems to indicate otherwise. What's the real answer here?

5. Ipod is not recognized using the USB port. I have to open another thread for this one. I searched it and my specific experience is not covered here.

6. The user guide is riddled with omissions, errors and duplicate pages. And it never autolaunched the "real" manual. I had to dig deep into the disc to find it. Not news to you, but holy crap, how many issues like this do you forgive the manufacturer for? I do LOVE the car and I know lots of cars have idiosyncratic issues, that then the owners end up defending and loving as part of the "experience" but I've owned many cars in 20 years that weren't this much of a challenge in the first 72 hours to figure out.

Any help would be welcomed.

Well let me try to help you out. Those bolts look like they belong for the doors. Maybe someone else will chime in, but they look like the door hinge bolts to me.

The stains on the bumper happened to me as well, but not near as bad as they got you. I used a clay bar kit to get them up "mostly" you can still see a slight trace of them where I left it on for a few days. I honestly have no clue what it is.

I don't have a soft top so can't help you there, but as far as the iPod thing goes I don't remember reading what radio you have, but on my 430N the iPod is only recognized from the USB port in the center console.

Hope this helps!

Bolts do look like their for the door. Check your door hinges. I don't know why they would be removed unless the doors were taking off for whatever reason just don't know what else they would be.

You dealer was wrong. The big orange tag specifically says only for transport. Remove it as soon a you can to risk damage.

Not sure about the stain. That looks like crap. Could remove it if you choose.

1). Those are door bolts. Make sure you have some on your doors. If you do then you have 2 extra. They are easy to lose so it's nice to have extra

2). X2 on the claybar you could also try degreaser or rubbing compound. Those could work. A lot of ppl take those silver covers off eventually and they make about $200 on Craigslist which could be nice

3). I can't see everything in that picture, but I'm sure we could help you identify them here on the forum if you post individual pictures of things. As far as the 4x4 goes, it is pretty straight forward and the manual will explain it but if you have more questions we would be happy to explain it

4). You should definitely take the top out. It's only in the back for delivery. If you leave it in for a week or something it'll be fine but don't do it all winter. Plus it'll give you better access to your trunk. You will need 1 or 2 more people to help take the hard top off tho. Unfortunately you can't take the soft top out without the hard top off. You need a T40 torx bit for the hard top and a T30 for the soft top bows

6). The manuals are hard but this forum is extremely helpful and if you have questions, they can be answered quickly here.

Enjoy the jeep! It's one of the most fun vehicles around!

The stains are from the rear tire my 2011 Sahara had them too as well as others I saw sitting on the lot.
Get a Clay Bar kit or some Mothers Cleaner wax, both will take the stains off.
Clean it ASAP, the longer it sits the harder it will be to remove.
I got all of mine off except for one faint spot.

You said that the dealer you went to was 3 hours away. Is that the closest dealer? If not, you could go to a closer dealer and address the issues with them. Especially the stains, no reason you should have to address that. Make them do it.

The answers you got were all correct.

As for the stain, take it to your nearest dealer, have them take pics to send to jeep warranty and jeep will pay(warranty) a new one. We had a bunch with stains due to the plastic being on the silver applique and dirt and water sitting in between the plastic and silver trim piece. We took pics and got new ones under warranty. We also found regular aersol glass cleaner got the stains out pretty well. Any dealer can take the pics and get the ok to warranty a new trim applique.

The straps in the packages are for your soft top to hold the folded arms whether it just be folded back on top, or all the way down.

Yes the USB is on the front of the stereo on the 430/730 N under the little pull tab. On my phone, I have a DroidX, it will actually transmit music to the stereo via bluetooth without using the usb cable so I use an adapter in the glove compartment so I don't get a mess of cables around the stick shift. I don't however know if it will run Pandora via bluetooth but it runs my rhapsody music though.

Guys, THANKS. This is all great info. And Happy Thanksgiving.

Yes there are closer dealers to me. I chose this dealer for dumb reasons and now wish I hadn't. The stains and the ipod thing are the things that are most problematic. Everything else so far are "quirks."

The stains are ridiculous. I just got the car 5 days ago. Unless I can get them all up and really gone easily, this should be a warranty issue. Which really sucks, but it is what it is.

I'll describe the iPod issue here: I have the 130 media center and the usb port in the center console box. I also have the Connectivity package.

First day, I plugged my ipod classic 120 gb into it and the jeep logo came up on the ipod and I think it tried to set up the device. But I had to disconnect prematurely. Came back and tried later and now upon connecting, the ipod shows a slightly different Jeep logo, reads only "connected. Ok to disconnect" and shows that it is charging.

But the controls on the ipod are frozen, and when I press the "aux/disc" button on the radio it goes into "UCI: Reading" mode for a long time, then displays "Device Empty" No audio plays, etc.

I suspected that I messed something up by yanking it early on the first hookup, but I've tried the hard ipod reset a couple times, once while connected with no luck.

Is there a reset function, or what else am I doing wrong? It seems like it's "half connected" but it's not working at all.

thanks for any help. This forum is awesome.

Plug the iPod into iTunes. Make sure it is running the latest firmware. Then reset the iPod to factory default. Then sync your songs again. You should be fine.

Also, and I'm not sure of this. I can play Pandora *not sure if it will hookup with bluetooth or usb*, but I can run a simple audio cord to the console and it works fine. So it could just be a incompatability issue. I don't and have never had an Ipod so I'm ignorant there.

Call 1 (877) 426-5337 it's the Jeep customer assistance # tell them you want all the paper manuals for your Jeep.. They will ask for your vin, and transfer you to the literature department. It's 100% free and they will ship them out right away! Make sure you get 3! One is a complete owners manual, one is just for your media center that you have, and the other is the warranty book! I find it nice to have these, when I'm trying to figure something out, I can take them out to the Jeep and check stuff out! Don't get me wrong the DVD is great, but sometimes it's easier to have the paperback on hand

Updates:

1. Stopped in Advance Auto parts today (I'm visiting in-laws for holiday) and the guy came out and looked at the bumper stains and said they probably were not Loctite or similar, that it looked to him like the tire rubber vulcanization had leeched out onto the bumper. He suggested that any cleaner with a petroleum distillate in it might help and suggested I try dish soap. Regardless, I bought the mildest bug & tar remover they had (turtle wax) and went home to try both. Dish soap did not work. Turtle Wax Bug & Tar remover worked like a charm. No evidence of stains remaining on bumper. One dealer trip averted.

2. Thanks to you guys, I think I've correctly identified the extra nuts as the ones in the bottoms of the door hinges. luckily, they ARE extra as all of the existing ones are in place.

Will tackle the remaining issues and iPod/USB fixes when I return back to my hometown Sunday. To answer above question, it's the classic 120 GB iPod.

I checks my rear bumper after reading this. Yep I had the stains too. I stopped by the dealership on the way home. Salesman said he had not heard of the problem before but the stains should wipe right off. I want home and grabbed a bottle of "Goo Gone" The Stains wiped right off. So there is at least one solution.

This happened again to mine after today's rain. It was easier to clean off the first time. Not so today.

My best guesses:
1) extra parts
2) take off those silver bumper covers and toss them
3) extra parts
4) one top at a time
5) maybe you didn't agree to the Apple terms and conditions
6) call jeep get hard copy manuals. in the mean time, turn key, step on gas pedal (it's the one on the right).

parts

3: Mine came with these in the glovebox. They are the grab handles(4) and a hanger hook(1 I think, haven't used this yet) that installs onto the rollbars. I believe only the Sahara and Rubi Unlimited comes with them. hth

Great info. Maybe this should be a sticky as both my new jeeps came without the owners manuals. I see them all over ebay so I suppose someone is taking them prior to delivery. Just called and ordered mine. Thanks for the heads up!!

Most manufacturers (including Chrysler) are not including them unless you request it to save the printing costs. Most people have a computer now and would rather view it electronically. Some Manufacturers are even providing an iPod app with the manual.

I think the people selling them on ebay are taking advantage of the fact that many people don't know you can request one for free.

Well, thanks... I get the whole "Jess DRIVE it!" thing, and it's not like I've not been driving it anyway since I got it (and loving it) but the dealer experience was SO much less acceptable than any others I've been through that I needed to call some of it out here and I've really appreciated the actual help this forum has given me.

1. Yes, thanks.
2. I may or may not remove them but it doesn't excuse the dealer or the Mfr. for setting this up to happen as it did. I can think of lots of ways to band-aid or move on from some of these issues but something about spending over $32K on a vehicle makes you want to impale someone when things are this idiotically handled, you know? This could have been avoided, pure and simple.
3. Yes, again thanks.
4. Got it, thanks.
5. No, I'm fairly iAdept. Everything is up to date and agreed on and locked down. Newest updates etc.
6. Again, that's great advice and I will get the hard copy manuals tomorrow morning. But it doesn't excuse stuff like having duplicate pages and missing sections in a published manual for a $32K+ vehicle. I'm all about JEEP cheerleading and hoping it gets Chrysler and the USA out of its decades-long run of being thought of as crappy autoworkers and sub-standard manufacturers - but it ain't happening anytime soon if this is the best they can manage on quality control of the little details. There's that whole school of thought in European car manufacturing, like with the SAAB experience, where they make as many of the "little things" as perfect as possible, hoping the halo effect will reflect back on the company as a whole. (Wow if their cupholders are this well-engineered, then the vehicle must be phenomenal! etc.) It works. Sadly, the reverse holds true: "Wow, if they can't get their printed manual correct, missing pages, duplicate pages, erroneous info - then what must the vehicle be like?"

Again, no I'm not comparing JEEP to SAAB. I love my JEEP. But my wife has a Mini Cooper which, while fun to drive - has got to be one of the most annoyingly idiosyncratic cars I've ever driven. Every little thing about it is infuriatingly designed, IMO. And she (and every other Mini owner I've ever met) will go to great lengths to defend the car's "quirks" because she loves it. Fair enough. But part of that started at the dealer experience. Which Mini has down cold over any American Mfr. It was like being in a spa for the day. You leave there forgiving any issues and loving the company. Let me summarize my Jeep experience by saying I love my Jeep DESPITE the dealer experience, not Because of it.

I would..

I would be satisfied for a few extra parts found in the Jeep, if I could only keep my 2012 JKU running and out of the shop for warrenty repairs (that do not seem to be fixing the problem)

Just picked up my 2012 sahara unlimited with dual top option on friday. I havent had a real chance yet to dig into some of the gear that was in the back with the soft top so I was wondering if anyone could tell me what comes in the 2 cardboard boxes? I assume its parts for the soft top but just hadnt had a chance to dive in yet. I also want to know because if they are parts for the soft top, I'll just keep it all boxed up until spring when I take the hard top off to run with the soft on so I dont lose any of the parts or misplace. thanks. PS...loving the Jeep!

It's the door surrounds and the windows in the boxes. Do not wait until spring. You need to remove the soft top right away and you need to remove the hard top in order to do so. Read your manual (DVD) and the warning labels. Keeping the soft top in there will risk damage to it.
