Key in ACC position?

the Sport Model is the Jeep and it's a 2 door, 2012 w/auto tranny. I have read the manual with regard to "flat towing" and it says to turn the key to the ACC position and to remove the negative battery cable. I understand the purpose of "unlocking the steering wheel" and thus with the key in ACC, "not draining the battery" but, try as I may, even with the key in my pocket, I can't get the steering wheel to lock,,, so I am wondering WHY? Has anyone else noticed or addressed this? Is my steering wheel supposed to lock? Help please.

Follow the owner's manual instructions for flat towing, to the letter. If you don't and you have some kind of problem while towing and damage your Jeep your insurance company will not help you if you did not follow the manufacturers instructions.

There are two flat tow sections in the manual. Are you sure you're not looking at the one that indicates a flat tow by a "commercial wrecker" for a disabled vehicle. I don't see in the flat tow section that there is a requirement to remove the battery cable or that the key needs to be in the run or acc position. If it's in there I guess I missed it and shouldn't be flat towing until I get better glasses.:) Your 2012 doesn't have a steering wheel "lock". That was discontinued around the end of 08.

Removing the battery cable is usually done to avoid a problem with some supplemental brake systems that override the turn signals the the brakes are activated. Some supp brake systems account for the brake lamp switch and some don't so pulling the battery cable (or brake lamp circuit fuse) will allow for proper turn and brake lamp operation when the brakes are activated.
