Keyed Gas Cap not a bad idea with gas headed north

Few people at my work had tanks siphoned, awesome.

Also, check your hood latches when you are about to drive, apparently some people playing pretty bad pranks around this damn city. Not me, but buddy told me he noticed his unhooked one night leaving work.

My policy is, when I see a locked gas cap, I just take the whole Jeep.

I just know more people will be driving around with siphoning kits these days. I honestly don't see relief at the pump in sight.

Anyone found Jeep keyed caps cheaper than $77?

And if there's any kind of primate in the trunk, I shoot it first, then take the Jeep.

Can you even siphon a Jeep? I just dropped the tank on an intrepid and it had a screen in the fill as it entered the tank, although the tank had a drain plug.

They are simply drilling/punching the gas tank from below now. They'll never even see your locking cap.

Didn't want this to be my first post, but...

1. Locking gas caps screw on. It wouldn't be hard or take long to bypass that lock.
2. Factory locking gas caps are not vault quality pieces. At hard tug opens the doors and usually brings along damage with it.

This sucks when it happens, but a locking gas cap is about the cost of a stolen tank of gas. Something to think about given how often this actually happens.

Now, the only reason I would think about a locking gas cap is to deter idiots from putting things IN my gas tank. These people typically wont go to extremes to "prank" someone.

even if the locking gas cap doesn't prevent them from taking gas, at least it looks pretty sweet! I'll end up getting one...if anything, they'll see it's easier to siphon the gas on the next car instead of going through the hassle of unscrewing my locked gas tank....makes sense to me. idk.

yep, crime of opportunity. easier to go to the next one that isnt protected. i will get one to prevent things being put in more than theft of my gas.
100% problem solved?? no but once again its a crime of opportunity.

i still undecided on the cap or the locking door though.....door may be the winner, who knows

I was thinking about the hood the other day and how it doesn't have to be opened from inside. Makes it really easy for someone to mess with the motor. Does anyone know of a way to lock the hood down?

A few weeks ago I called 4 or 5 local locksmiths in the DC area and none of them would touch my locking gas latch for a rekey to the ignition key. They just didn't want to do it or couldn't do it I'm not sure so rekeying to the ignition is not as easy as some make it sound.

man, is this why I've been getting only 14 mpg? glad I can blame it on petty criminals, and not the awesomeness that is my jeep!

Seems like a silly thing to worry about. I mean, some people have posted about buying $150 grill inserts, so spending 80 bucks on a locking gas cap is certainly an option. Really though, a determined thief will steal from anyone, and people looking to prank you won't care what type of locks you have. It's a jeep. It's assumed that it will be public domain. Really the best bet is to spring for one of those proxy-enabled car alarm kits, so that at least folks will be alerted to monkey time
