kids and 2 doors?

Hi everyone! I have been reading the forum for days trying to find some opinions on this subject but, have had no luck. Today i decided to join so I could ask...

I am planning on buying a new Islander in July. I have 2 kids 5 and 10. Does anyone here have a 2 door for a daily driver and kids? I am currently driving a 4 dr car which I bought in '07. I looked at Wranglers when I was vehicle shopping then but, thought more about the kids and getting them in and out. Now they are big enough to crawl over and get to the back (which they do in my car sometimes anyway) So, I guess my question is how having 2 doors and kids working out for people?

I have had Jeeps before my 1st was a yellow CJ5. I loved it but, pregnancy hormones got the better of me and I sold it. Kids grow- Jeeps can sit- hormones suck. My second was a Cherokee.

Thanks for any input.

get the jeep. if the kids complain about climbing in then tough luck for them. besides, if the top is down, they can just climb over the side. and from what i remember of when i was their ages, climbing over stuff was sweet

oh, and welcome to the forum

I have 2 kids, ages 5 and 10 also. I just bought a 4 door the beginning of May. I looked at the 2 doors, but with the kids and putting stuff in the back there just wasn't anywhere near enough room. It's my daily driver also. The 4 door is substantially larger and holds all our "stuff" perfectly.

My jeep is also my daily driver. I have 2 kids and got my 2 door jeep when they were 4 and 8. I had no trouble. My kids loved going for rides in the jeep and, after I boosted them up, would happily climb into the back. Get the jeep.

Thanks SCHNUTZY... my boys are little climbing monkeys! I love Wranglers and I love the Tiki Bob. Although if I can't get the blue one I may not get the Islander.

Thanks, my friend has a 4 dr and loves it. I just prefer the 2 dr. Congrats on your new Jeep, I can't wait to get mine!

My jeep has a 4" lift and 33" tires, so it's taller than stock. When the kids were small, I'd lift them up to the step and they'd get the rest of the way in, with no trouble. Now, they are 9 and 13 and they get in without any help. LOL

Thanks.

I have the 2 door JK.

I have two kids (12,16) and they are always fighting to
sit in the front seat. To be honest getting in the JK
backseat sucks, the seat doesn't move that much
forward . They should have kept the same seat the
TJ's had, that seat moved a lot more forward. Oh well
small price to pay to have a Jeep that is so much fun
to drive everyday and i wouldn't trade it for the world !

I didn't really like the 4 door unlimited because my 16
year old isn't with me and my 12 year old that much so that's why i got the two door but if my kids were
a lot younger then i probably would have gotten the
4 door. Test drive both and Good Luck !

3 kids here and they love the jeep....kind of. They are all girls..15,10 and 6...they bitch about thier hair blowing around!! I told them its the "Jeep look". With 3 kids I doubt I could swing a 2 door.....but we are loving the 4 door!!

Depending on your intentions, the 4-door may be a better option in the long-term. Being 5 and 10 now, in a few years they'll be 12 and 17 and climbing over stuff won't be as much fun as it will be a hassle. And as mentioned above, when it comes to carrying kids and stuff, the 2-door simply doesn't offer the space that the 4-door does.

As an aside to this, the other factor that sold me on a 4-door over a 2-door was the ride and handling. The added weight and length isn't significant by the numbers, but its enough to really 'tame' the vehicle's on-road characteristics without sacrificing it's off-road capabilities... and if you plan on using this as a daily driver you'll come to appreciate this little nicety!

Thanks everyone for the replies. This will be the first time since I got married - My tall man couldn't fit in my VW Golf - that i am getting a car thinking more of me than my family. That sounds horrible but, it's true. I'm the kinda girl who likes the wind in my hair and thinks that playing in the mud is fun! Although now I'm getting to be an old woman -just turned 39- I haven't played in the mud in eons and I want to have some fun before I forget what that is. Plus my big dog Abbie can't get into the Galant! My boys are looking forward to it but, my oldest never wants the windows down so he will have a rude awakening when the top is off! I have been making him ride with all the windows and the sunroof opening saying "this is what it will be like in a Jeep"!

If you want space, then go for the 4 door. It has a hell of a lot of space. As for capability, it doesn't loose that much when you take it offroading. Its considered more stable than the previous generations just because of it wider and longer wheelbase. Test both out and make the decision then..

Now lissen here youngster!! If you think 39 is old, then maybe you shouldn't be buying a Wrangler onaccounta Jeeps are for us folks what refuse to get old - or at least acknowledge that fact.

Seriously, just remember you don't stop doing the things you love because you get old - you get old because you stop doing the things you love.

I know i am trying to get over some of this bad thinking i have and move in reverse! That's why i'm gettin the Jeep. My dad waited til he was 68 to buy a motorcycle and I don't want to wait to enjoy life and look back on day saying dang I wish I had gotten that Jeep!

I know my boys will love it...they climb like monkeys anyway and I'll have this Jeep long after they are driving their own cars.

Thanks for the the reminder though! Some days I feel old and some days i look in the mirror and say WTH! where did the gray hairs come from! On those days i put on my iPod and dance around the house like a fool with my 80's music playing!

They will love the Jeep!
I say go for the 4 door for space, but if you prefer the 2-door, that works too!
Good luck!

Don't even think about it get the 4 door. I thought that I could get by with a two door 2 years ago. Needless to say I had to trade it In Last week for a 4 door. I wish I would have bought the 4 door in the first place. Way more storage, easier to get people and my daughter around, and you don't loose any of that jeep feel! Good luck!

My daughter just graduated from college. My son is a freshman in high school. I LIKE SPACE. I needed the tow capacity of 3500 lbs because I'm a towing maniac. I LIKE SPACE. The ride of the 4 door is well worth the price of admission compared to the 2 door. I LIKE SPACE. Wheeling the 4 door has been way too much fun. And did I mention i really like the added space that the 4 door offers? I go camping A LOT and I bring a lot of stuff. I got a covered utility trailer 6 foot X 10 foot and that fits a lot of camping stuff in it. I go kayaking. I put a rack up top (congo cage) so that my 4 yaks can go up top and my gear can go in the way back and four passengers still fit in there. My son is a boy scout and he is in an active troop. When we go on outings there is usually a bunch of kids with me on the trip. No complaints about space or climbing in or out. I'll probably own this jeep until it rots out from under me. I wouldn't trade it for a two door, I'm just too attached to the 4 door right now and don't see this changing any time soon. But good luck on your decision. The fact that your choice is to buy a jeep is already hard to argue with.

Well if you get the 4door then you get 2 extra doors an extra boost from 2000lbs towing to 3500 towing and and extra mile per gallon (20 over 19 according to jeep )

4 door, for ease of getting them in and out and the extra room. I have an old 95 model and two kids under 3, getting them in is not a big deal, but there is so little room for anything else. Thus, we usually take the grand cherokee for family events, unless it a nice top down day.

our problem was storage. The kids (2 and 13) love it. Our two year old is hooked and whenever he has a choice of who to ride with, he wants to ride in the jeep. He sits all big boy, strapped in his seat in the back. He's high enough to be able to see out the windows and hes always been an outdoor type, totally LOVES "daddy jeep".

for storage, I debated on either a roof mount or rear mount and this is what I came up with; it helps soooo much with the camping gear and such.

Thanks everybody! I thought asking the question would make it easier but...
Anyway, I like reading all the opinions. You all make good points. I have a month to decide. I may spend it at the dealerships getting in and out of Jeeps. I think those guys will be earning that commission with me...Oh Hell! Here she comes again!
