this might be a stupid question...andi have hade kn filters but the factory air filter had filters on both sides. does the kn air filter go in the box normal or filter(longer) side up kind of upside down?

Huh? Your going to have to be a little more clear with what you are trying to say. As for the K&N I wouldn't put one in a lawnmower let alone my jeep. Have you seen what those filters suck up? They will inject all the air along with all the dirt as well, put the stock filter back in and save yourself the expense of a ruined engine.

You won't find many here who would use or recommend K&N filters.

tell me more about the K&N and why it is bad. I believe my dealer here puts K&N in on their jeeps.. and my 2012 has one in it. What's wrong with them?

They let in a excessive amount of dirt and dust and crap thats in the air through them and in turn all that stuff that gets through them ends up in your engine.. That is bad news..

Long side down.

I drive on dusty desert roads all summer, if installed, cleaned and oiled properly K&N drop in panel works quite well.

My K&N air filter has kept my intake tube and throttle body clean for 5 years now.

Every second oil change I replace mine and vacuum it on the first change unless I've been roading or in dusty conditions etc. I just use the mopars I find the after markets especially k&n and air raid suck in too much of everything.

Been using K&N filters in high performance supermoto racing morotcycles for the last 10 years and I inspect carbs daily on those things.

Simple test to find out if your air filter is working properly.

Wipe a thin film of grease or oil around the inside of the intake tube behind your air filter.
Inspect it carefully after riding (or driving) 60 MPH down a gravel road and back.
IF ANY dust whatsover sticks to the film you have either a bad seal or a bad filter. Start over. Works with any engine and any filter.

I use the K&N brand cleaner, warm water and spray on oil on all of my filters, works great. Very simple. Soak, rinse from clean side out, dry, oil done.
Do not ever use high pressure water or compressed air to clean the element.

Mileage will always go down as miles rack up.
Even those smug hybrid owners lose a few MPG after break in.
I'd guess us 3.8L JK owners are all losing about 1 MPG per 10,000 miles.
have to wait and see how the Penstar crowd fairs after a good 20-30K break in of hard off road use. I beat the crap out of mine and it just keeps purring.

...used K&N pod filters on my 2000 ZRX1100 and they worked great! but ya gotta keep 'em cleaned and oiled.

Ummm.... NO!

1. Pull the POSITIVE terminal.
2. Hold it to the negative (ground) terminal for 30 seconds.
3. Reconnect positive terminal
4. Turn ignition to on (do not start)
5. Turn headlights on
6. Turn headlights off
7. Turn ignition off.
8. Computer is reset.

Won't you get a big spark putting the positive on the negative or do you disconnect both?

Spend a good amount of time over in the Tj area.

This procedure always caused a lot of debates.

Pretty much whether it worked or not.
Always came done to just disconnecting the battery for 8+ hours and done.

Some reputable folks too

You disconnect the positive terminal from the battery, THEN hold the loose terminal (no current) to the negative terminal. This drains all the capacitors that hold the computer memory.

Yes, if you short the positive and negative terminals, you're going to get a heck of a light show, maybe even a nice explosion.....

Edit: This isn't my original idea.... I learned it from..... Don't remember, I'll go look and post a link

Edit: Here ya' go. http://www.quadratec.com/jeep_knowle...article-89.htm

Good old Google! "reset jeep computer": second hit!

Yeap, that'll work. Capacitors discharge slowly overnight. But, why wait?

Also not real safe to disconnect the negative side. Current can still flow to ground. I learned always to disconnect the positive (hot) side first.
