Gosh I hope it's a newness thing... Pretty sure it is, tho they did redesign it for '10... We drove an '08 with it, and it was pretty easy to close, iirc.. But then, we drove the thing all day, and after opening the sunrider, we dropped the whole top, so that may have had something to do with it....

The instructions are atrocious... but after much trial and error, we did accomplish it. Not entirely sure it was worth it, but I'm sure, with time the top will stretch enough to make it remotely feasible to use the Sunrider option.... as it sits now, you almost have to take off everything to get the top closed if you open the Sunrider...
Make sure you keep the side bow latches clipped in above the door surrounds. You're also supposed to remove the back window at speeds over 40mph, I have found that just unzipping the sides of the window and leaving it in place works fine.

So you leave the little springy things attached and just fold it back one flip? Maybe that was the problem... When we put the top up again, I'll try to get some pics to ensure we're doing it right, heaven forbid I read the manual... And the instructions that came with the top did not make any mention of the sunrider other than securing the springs....

If you have the "springy things" then you have a 2010 top. Is there also a latch above the door surround? Prior to 2010 the sides had a plastic drip rail that clipped into the door surrounds. That was replaced with the "springy things". There is also a latch, however I don't know if that still exists. That latch held everything in place when you unlatch the header. With everything still it place it was very easy to close the sunrider and latch the header. If that no longer exists it could explain the difficulty of closing the sunrider and latching the header.

Yes, I have a '10 top and all it's parts. There is a latch on the door surround, no plastic drip rails attach to the surrounds now.

So you're saying you just unlatch the header, and fold the top back with the joint in the frame and that's where it sits? No undoing the latch and folding it back to the soundbar? Well that would make it easier to re latch.... I guess the latch just serves the same purpose the old drip rails served, but easier to undo when folding the top... Hmmmm.

GRATZ on your pending purchase.

I cannot overstate how much time, effort, and MONEY I have saved by taking a few minutes to read through this:
CarBuyingTips.com new car buying guide, avoiding dealer scams, new cars, used car buying

I've purchased dozens of cars, and I've had close friends and family who worked for dealerships AND were salespeople. I still learn A LOT from that website every time I go to it.

Dont expect something for nothing. Dont try to get them to give it to you. But dont let them stick their hands in your pockets.

The objective should be a fair deal for both sides. That website will help you figure out what "fair" is.

You'll see fairly quickly that MSRP is a joke that NOBODY actually expects to get. "Invoice Price" is what they hope to get. Hold-backs and other incentives offered by the manufacturer actually put the vehicles on the lot for several thousand dollars LESS than invoice.

Know what you want and what you can afford BEFORE you walk through the door. Dont get swayed from either position. If you find what you want (price AND options), be happy with it and dont worry about whether you coulda got it for a few hundered less.

Trying to get those "springy things" to clip back in place once the whole top had been down is what we were finding to be the hardest part of the process (when trying to reclose).. but LOL... Here's a link to the current video on the Jeep website that may help... My Jeep: 2008 Jeep Wrangler Soft Top Guide - (they make it look so easy )

I use my sunrider a lot because I work at night. At first it was extremely tight and I couldn't undo the driver's side bare handed. Had to keep a tool handy. 4 monthes later it has loosened up a lot and don't need the tool anymore. Hope that helps.

That may well be the case for vehicles on the lot (especially for the 2010's now), but ordering from the factory is a bit of a different story.

I had my own gauge to determine if the deal was a good one:

Take my latest, greatest out-the-door offer from dealership A and email it to dealerships B, C, D, and E. Tell B, C, D, & E that all they have to do is beat this price by even $20 and they will earn my business.

When my only responses are "We would love to have your business, but unfortunately the best we can do is match that number" or the like, then I'm pretty sure I got a good deal. Because if there was room to do so, I'm sure any dealership would be happy to give me a small amount off if it meant they could sell me the car.

LOL, he does make it look easy.. And is he like 8' tall, cause dang, I can't see the top of our Rubi without standing on something... But that does help some. They've redesigned the top, so mine's a bit different than that, but it helps me understand the principal... Silly newfangled stuff confuses my rotted brain...

Bingo! There should be a plastic sleeve on the side bow that covers the sunrider hinge. Slide that forward on both sides and the sunrider portion will fold back and that latch stays in place holding the entire soft top up. This is the same procedure to follow to actually lower the top only you would release those latches. With the latches in place the sunrider should latch back to the header without a problem. You should have 2 velcro straps to secure the sunrider to the sidebow when it's open.

Inferno I did that same thing the first day I got my jeep, just wanted the sunrider open and un-clipped the side latches and had no idea why I couldn't get it to close after riding around and had to take the whole top down to get it to lock back into the latches. Just make sure the little sleeve is off the joints and release the 2 hatches and she folds right back into position
