Last-Minute Dealer Pricing Question...

So it looks like today might be the day. After half a dozen dealership visits, I'm ordering my 2011 Sport with most of the factory options.

MSRP: $28,895
Invoice: $27,612
Tread Lightly Price: $27,336

The Tread Lightly discount also removes the Destination Fee (which for the nearby dealers here is between $400 and $700).

I've also gotten the local dealer to reduce the Documentation (CVR) Fee from $229 to $24 (I had to walk before they agreed to that one ).

I seem to be encountering pretty significant resistance at this point. As in, when I contact other dealerships to see if they'll beat the price, they never call me back, etc.

So here's the question, for those that might know. I've heard that it's harder to talk down the price on a vehicle that you're ordering, is that true? And do you think there's much more room to haggle here, or should I be happy with these numbers?

It's going to be tough to get any lower, that's why they're not returning calls. They might be more willing to deal with the 2010's but not the 11's.

Of course its harder to deal down on a Jeep you have to order than one sitting on thier lot they are paying interest on.

What your doing is right , by shopping multiple dealers.

The dealers didnt build the Jeep,, they are simply selling it. You really have no idea what profit they make , msrp, invoice, they are just numbers they work from, then discount trying to get you thinking,, hey Im getting $x,xxx off,, this MUST be good.

Try looking at Ebay for Wrangler pricing,,, that gives you a good idea where you should be right off the bat. Some offer free shipping.

If your in the midwest,, PM me and I can help.

Okay, thanks for everyone's input.

From the looks of it, this is about as good a price as I can expect, considering that I'm ordering it.

All the same, before I go over there this afternoon, I'll probably call a couple more dealerships just in case. No harm in overdoing it.

Okay, FYI for anyone that's interested in ordering a 2011 to their own specifications -- daggo66 had it exactly right.

I contacted three more dealerships, giving them the specs of my order and the cost breakdown of my current offer. I then said basically, "I'm planning on ordering the vehicle this afternoon. If you can make a better offer than you see above, please contact me and I'd be happy to order from your dealership."

First two dealerships: No response.
Third dealership:

Quote:
Jeff,

Thanks for your interest in the 2011 Jeep Wrangler. If you qualify for the affiliate pricing plan, there is no more room to negotiate. That is the rock bottom price and you don't pay the dealer fee. If you would consider a 2010 model, we can certainly try to make you a better deal or we can porcess your order with Chrysler.

You have been given the lowest price available. Please let us know if we can help you further.

Thanks,
I'm feeling pretty confident about the price now, considering no one even wants to take off an extra fifty bucks just to get my business. :P

And as soon as I said it, someone did just that. Dealer #2 called me back and said, "Well, we're really nickel-and-diming at this point, but we can take $25 off the tag/title fee and offer $0 Doc/CVR Fee instead of the $24 you are being offered currently. But that's all we can do, you're officially at rock bottom."

So I just saved an extra $49.

jeffk42... since you are currently going through the factory ordering process, I was wondering what is actually required by a Dealer to get the factory order process started. Do you have to leave a hefty deposit at the time you place your order?.. or, can you just finance the entire amount?.. if you do finance, does it begin when you place your order or two months later when you receive your Jeep? - I've never purchased a new vehicle this way and was just kind of curious how it all works.

I'm actually sitting at the dealer right now.

They want a $1000 deposit to order, which you can either get back or add to your down payment when the vehicle arrives. Financing is done then, when the Jeep is on the lot. So for me, I'm financing through my bank - I'll give the dealer any down payment and/or trade in when I pick up the Jeep and the bank will then cut a check to the dealer for the financed amount. The good thing about it is that it allows me another few weeks to save and add more to my down payment when the time comes.

Best of Luck and hopefully, you won't have too long of a wait for your new Jeep to arrive

Keep us posted on what exactly you end up ordering (model, color, options, etc)

Just ordered a 2011 Sport S package today. Added 4 speed auto, halfdoors ,sirius radio, trailer tow group cost total 26,335.00 got a discount of some sort and the final price is 25,390.00. The same as a 2010 I was quoted on. I asked what the discount was and the salesman said it's a dealer discount. I didn't ask any more. 1000.00 down and didn't have to sign anything . He said he would call me in 6 to 8 weeks. Gives me time to sell the TJ. Oh yeah got bright white. Wasn't on the color list for 2011 but they said no problem.

Really?? Never heard this - do you just ask or is it part of the deal? Do dealers have an option to honor this part?

I didn't even realize it until the dealer told me. He said it was part of the program. 1% under invoice and no dealer fee. Several other dealers verified without me even asking.

Sounds like a great deal. I'm about to get one spec'd out pretty similar. Do all dealers honor the tread lightly discount?

Also, I would like to get some custom black wheels but keep same tires. Any suggestions on that? I assume it's best to go through the dealer and just trade out the stock wheels?

Not sure about the wheels, but yes every dealer should honor the Tread Lightly discount. The discount is for all Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep vehicles anywhere regardless of dealership.

I'm not sure this is correct... The Destination Fee in our area was $750 and our Tread Lightly discount did not remove it from the Dealer's Invoice amount...

and based on the invoice amount that you are showing ($27612).. it does not seem as though it was really removed from yours either (at least not according to Edmunds... they show that the Dealers Invoice for a 2011 Jeep with your options would fall right around what you're showing, but the Edmunds Invoice does include the Destination Fee.

also.. if your Tread Lightly discount got you down to $27336.. while it's true that is 1% below the $27612 invoice amount.. somewhere along the way, there should have been a $75 processing fee for using the TL discount. If you didn't actually have to pay it (somewhere in your figures), you may have saved even a little more than you first realized.

Sorry, not Destination Fee, I meant Dealer Fee. At my dealership the Dealer Fee was $700, and all the others I checked were $400-$700. That fee is waived due to the TL discount.

Don't waste your time with Tread Lightly. I walked into a dealership today, test drove a 2011 and told them about Tread Lightly and that I wanted the same deal without having the hassle of signing up and presenting a letter and they said "ok".

Well, I'm not sure I agree that it's a waste of time. First, the dealer I went to was also willing to give me the price without the TL control number, but they wouldn't waive the Dealer Fee without it. Remember, if you can haggle you'll always get a better deal with the TL discount because the dealer gets the rebate from the factory. They don't get that rebate without the TL control number, so they won't budge as much on the various fees they charge.

Not to mention the $100 discount on your next set of tires that the TL membership gets you.

Tread Lightly is a worthy cause regardless of the pricing benefit you get when purchasing a new Jeep.

I noticed something that you might want to look into. I see that you got the dual top option. However, I see that it comes with the "easy-folding top" and the stock Sunrider top was deleted. If you are planning on getting ,uch use out of the soft top, the Sunrider is a very nice feature. If you plan on selling the soft top, as some people do, not many people want to buy a soft top unless it's the Sunrider.

I had no idea they were different! Thanks for the heads up. Is there any benefit to the Easy-Folding top over the Sunrider, or is it just cheaper for them to put on by default?

There was no option to get the Dual Top with Sunrider....

The sunrider lets you flip the front back like a sunroof. It's great for getting out of the office with the sun shining and wanting the open air feeling for the drive home without taking everything down. It's quick and easy. The one you're getting is all or nothing.

This may be a necessary change for the factory to make since they ship the Jeep with both tops pre-installed (says this in the owner's manual and that you should remove one or the other before you begin using the vehicle).

So guessing that the design of the Sunrider soft top does not allow the factory to stuff it inside the Freedom hard top for shipping?

No, this is the first I've ever noticed the Sunrider being deleted for the plain top. Usually it's the other way around. Could be a 2011 thing. I'm sure it's an adjustment that can be made by the dealer if it's too late to amend the order.

Just did this the other day..... We had the easy fold, had to have a bunch of hardware for it and windows, so the dealer ordered them, then mentioned that the entire thing was a few hundred $ more. We ended up paying the difference and buying the Sunrider, after realizing we didn't have it... Finally got all the parts in yesterday and installed it last night.... The instructions are atrocious... but after much trial and error, we did accomplish it. Not entirely sure it was worth it, but I'm sure, with time the top will stretch enough to make it remotely feasible to use the Sunrider option.... as it sits now, you almost have to take off everything to get the top closed if you open the Sunrider...

Maybe it is a newness thing.. because we have also noticed the same thing with our new Wrangler when trying to ride with either the front flipped or the whole top down... it is Very Hard to get the Sunrider relatched once it's been opened!
