Leaking axle seal

I just replaced my gears on the front of my JK unliminted sahara. Its now leaking out of the driver side tube. Can this be cause by hving to much fluide in the case?

Yes overfilling can cause it to leak at the seal. It will "find it's level" sooner or later or you can drain some out if it is making a mess.

Leaking or weeping? Leaking normally there is a drip = not good. Weeping you may get a little build up around the housing = that's ok.

Well why doesnt it leak on both side? And it is leaking. It slings oil all over the inside of my tire and the inner wheel well.

Good question. Almost everyone I have seen do this does it on the drivers side for some reason. Mine does the same thing. Of coures you can also have a bad seal and might have to replace it which would require tearing the diff down again. Its a lot cheaper and easer to see if it will level out first as long as you don't let it get to low.

Have you brought this up with whoever did the gear install?

Well I actually replace the seal saturday night. I hate to tear back in to it so thats why i figured i would ask first. so you think i need to run a day or so to see if it levels out? And yes, the guy helping me has never heard of overfilling it makeing it leak

How over full is it? I have personally seen 4 JKs that will do this and a little oil out of the tube sure does make a big mess don't it.

Well I filled it up to the plug but the front end was jacked up a little.

That shouldn't be enough to cause a leak then. All the ones I know that get overfilled are with aftermarket covers. You could try leting a little out and seeing if it helps before tearing into it. Just remember that oil that is in the tube will still come out for a while. Last time I checked mine I parked it down hill and sprayed B12 up in the tube to make sure I wasn't seeing oil that was already there.

No man actually I didn't. The post you quoted was talking about oil building up or driping from the housing and the OP said he had an oil leak from an axle tube. Apples and Oranges, and a simple misunderstanding.

^Whoops, re-read it and misunderstanding on my part, sorry!

I know about the diff cover leak, which I thought you were referring to, I know nothing about tubing leakage. I really haven't heard much about this, so sorry I'm of no help, hopefully you guys figure this out!

The seals sit right by where the tubes go in the housing and its not uncommon to nick one or have one get messed up a smidge when sliding the axles back in....I did it on my last next and this one I replaced the seals before axle install. They get damaged easier the older they are heat and the environment they are in hammers them...

If you dont have rcv axles you can get away with pulling an axle and slapping alloyusa end seals in...

The JKs have cups before the seals so the seals are less prone to damage but it does happen sometimes. Not very often in my experience with new seals at least. Good call on the end seals, assuming there are no sleeves eather. Of course if going this rought it wouldn't hurt to put just a little extra oil in the diff since the tube will be holding oil.

I wonder how much would collect in the short tube on a setup like this?

Don't know...

The rubber still protrudes past the recessed press spot and seal against the axle which splines are generally a smidge bigger and there's no way to center axle so a lot of times it drags through the seal...

But here's a concern for people who do them, (alloyusa outer axle seals) make sure that if you have a leak from the inner seal the pressure from turbulence will generally force oil past the seal which won't pass back into the diff housing...
Make sure to check the oil height regularly at first....

Just gave scott a set Saturday when we welded his truss on, he's been leaking for a couple months now and every time he goes through water he pukes milkshake on the ground...
(Oil and water milkshake, mmmmmmm.lol)

Actually you both are right. There can be a full drip leak and just seepage occurring at the axle seal tube too. The TJ had a seal seeping really slow for awhile, all you would see was a grease mark along the bottom of the inside tube at the end where the plastic dust cap was.

I finally had it torn down under warranty at 70k because it started to drip. It wasn't much, just a few drops an hour maybe, enough to see on the driveway after sitting all night.
