Does anyone do this, or des it have "bad idea" written all over it?

When going from naked to fully clothed, taking those out/putting them on seems to be the worst part.

Took them off every Jeep i've ever had the day I bought it and never put them back on until they were sold.

I take them off around April & put them back on around September. No problems so far.

Good news: Newer JKs have spaces for door bolts and hard top bolts in the rear covered storage area for safe keeping. :thumb:

This is really interesting news. I took the doors off for the first time last weekend. While I was putting them back on Sunday night, I thought about how the screws are probably the one step that makes the whole process cumbersome.

Knowing that it is safe to leave the screws out completely changes the time cost/benefit analysis. This forum rocks!

I removed mine last summer and had the doors on and off. I left the screws in the back and didn't bother with them again. This year, when I took the doors off for the first time, they were STUCK! Took me over an hour to work them all loose.

I don't know if it had anything to do with the bolts, but it sure got me thinking that it wasn't a great idea.

I worry about the same thing cornfed, I put mine back on in the winter to keep the crud and salt out of them. But all summer there out.

Ahh, I must be weird! I love running the big old No. 50 Torx bolts in and out. I keep the Torxbit, u-joint, and 3/8" socket head-to-screwdriver-bit all assembled. Just slip it into my little battery drill-driver and run em in and out in seconds. The U-joint allows me to keep everything away from the paint, and the drill/driver does all the heavy lifting.

Being associated with the legal industry, if something were to happen when I was driving around with the doors on but bolts out, I wouldn't want to be sitting in a deposition being asked, "And Mr. Defendant, just why is it that you left this critical component of the Jeep's safety system uninstalled when you took my client for a ride on that fateful day?" ;)

^ seriously?
Yes, in both of my paragraphs. I actually enjoy running the screws in and out (hey, nothing kinky), and I actually have 22 years experience seeing what people can and will be hung out to dry over in the case of a lawsuit.

It doesn't keep me from driving doorless all summer; that's a risk I'm willing to take because I get something great out of the risk. But if my doors are on anyway, I get no enjoyment out of the bolts being out; in fact, it deprives me of the fun of running them in and out. But even if it didn't, there's no real upside to me to leaving them out, so why incur that extra risk?

I'm not advising anybody at all that they should think likewise. Just sayin'...

Mr. Attorney, can you show me the legal document I signed or the video/audio recorded conversation that indicates my understanding that according the the Chrysler Corporation those two screws are a... what did you say... "critical component of the Jeep's safety system"?

...

Can you show me the part in the Owner's Manual provided with the vehicle by the Chrysler Corporation (that I am under no legal obligation to read before operating that vehicle) where it says that?
I'm all up for people doing whatever they want (screws or no screws), but what I can say is that I wouldn't want to be the one in court using the above statements to defend my actions, that's for sure.

I removed the screws, then the doors, then the top... Not to be reinstalled till October hopefully. I don't think I ever put the screws it nuts (YJ) back on any of my past Jeeps.
