Lesson Learned....

Well even after reading about it happening, and telling myself at the beginning of the day not to forget.... I forgot! Stupid retainer straps! I was plasti-dipping my front doors and sure enough when I reinstalled them I didn't immediately reconnect the wiring harness and retainer strap. Little puff of wind and now I have a dent in my side cowl piece that is about the same as one from a golf ball. I tore the front apart as much as I was comfortable to try and get to the dent but no go. So after putting it all back together what do I do??? Walk around and open the passenger side and BAM same thing. I was furious. Oh well at least both sides match now. Hate it when I learn lessons the hard way. Positive side, first dents on my new JKUS are from me doing things to it and not from some BS from the parking lot or crap thrown up from in front of me while driving.

Ok rant over, that is all...lol

Wow! That sucks. I've gotten in the habit of taping foam blocks I have to the cowl when I remove and install my front door.
I've had too many close calls myself.

I didn't even know I had done it. One day noticed the dent and was like, "that's a crazy dent, how in the world did that get there." Later I read about it on here and realized how it must have happened.

I think paint less dent repair quoted me about $50 to pop it out. But I just left it. Figured I'd probably forget again sometime in the future.

It is never a matter of "if"....it is "when"...

Been there, done that, got the dent to prove it....

Stay away from the wipers out and hood up club. Bad company over there.

Hey, I just joined the door swinging hood dent club a few days ago when putting my doors back on! Pretty minor damage. Looks mostly like the hood side logo got a little ding so it's not full bore like yours but lesson earned also. Door on, strap connected, no delay.

wasn't there some dry ice trick that worked good for popping them out?

I'm a member. I put an American flag decal on to cover the dent.

Crap. I have only had my Jeep for 4 months and have never had the retainer straps off. That exact dent appeared a while ago and I have always wondered where it came from.

The only time that the straps have come off was when it was at the dealership when they were trying to fix a leak.

That was about 3 months ago. I guess it is too late to try and call them on it.

Sorry it happened. I haven't had my doors off yet but you can bet I would've done the same thing. I put a big note on my tool chest to remind me not to do that. Only thing is, I'll probably get used to seeing the note and ignore it when time comes.

That's not a bad idea. The Rugged Ridge Black Cowl Armor will at least cover up the dents. You could look into a shop that does "no pain" dent repair and see if they can pull them out for you. But that'll cost you more than the covers! Let me know if you have any questions or would like a quote!

How well will those protect your cowl from being damaged by the door?

Here's what I was working on when it happened. Still not pleased that I dented the cowls but it was worth it to look this good!

I think I might look into the cowl covers or possibly just find some emblem/sticker that looks good in that spot.

I think you guys must live in places that don't have much wind... I live by the ocean and I never have my door open without a firm hand on it.

I don't think I've ever let a door go and have the wind take it retainer strap or no...

The plastic material should do a good job of absorbing the hit and keeping you dent free. Plus, they attach with 3M tape so you can always pull them off if you decided to. Let me know if you have other questions or would like a quote!

Im sure i'll do this soon, because i have a habit of letting my tj door swing open because the tire catches the door before it gets to the body.

I always park on a hill when I take the doors off/put them on, and I have my 17 year old daughter help put them back on, I hold the door up and she adroitly lines up and drops them in place and stands between the door and the cowl while I attach the strap and harness.

I almost had this issue, but thank god I caught the door before it could cause the dents. Sometimes we just have to kick ourselves in the butt and move on. Sorry to hear this happened to you.

Appreciate the condolences, but I'm pretty much like "eh its a JEEP its gonna get some ding" already. Just move on to the next mod and plans for getting some real trail rash if this WV weather ever breaks. I love snow in the winter, measured in feet is fine with me, but come on its almost April! I haven't even had the whole top off my new ride yet and I'm approaching 2000miles! Give me daytime temps in the low 60s please...

P.S. I'm unimpressed with the lack or response to the look of my Plasti-Dip door skins... Anyone other than me liking this look? Kinda reverse half door look I think.

Well if I'm gonna be honest, for practical purposes I understand the plasti dipped doors but personally not a fan of the look. My .02
