Exclamation Lets put the sand tire debate to rest

This has been debated time and time again and nobody ever seems to have a straight answer. Is it true regular aired down street tires offer the BEST possible (street legal) traction in sand?

uh....the sand paddles on my sand rail get much better traction than my deflated tires on my jeep. I have Cooper LT 265/70/R17 Discoverer SST tires and they are just OK in the sand.....there are many types of street tires out there, so you cant make a blanket statement either way. Too many variables........

OK, then if it has to be street legal, what are the other options? Aired down street legal tires vs ??? are the best in the sand. The question might be, which ones are best. I think all weather tires may be better than heavily lugged tires. Surface area is key, I would think any aired down tire works better in the sand than at street pressures. Also, all sand is not the same either............there may not be a straight answer.

All i can say is stay away from mud grips lol. I have em on mine and cruising the beach is fine. However if i try to pull someone out they just want to bury

Look into nitto dune grapplers. I have them on my truck (2500hd diesel) great traction on the street, in the dirt, not too bad in the rain though some claim they suck in the rain, but they aren't too good in the snow. But they are a DOT tire designed for sand and loose surfaces.

I think a A/T would work well not that a good all season doesn't work well in sand as long as it's has a wide tread. AT's can handle multiple surfaces for a 4X4 experience and their is a nice selection in wider tires and when running on sand the wider the better. Wide and aired down. You can even run into mud near the beach and a passenger tire may leave you stuck. But saying that even wide MT's suck in sand compared to passenger tires.

Those look cool, but they really need a rain channel in them, especially for here in the NW.........

Check out the Falken a/t's. I have no complaints with mine and haven't aired down yet. Haven't been to really deep soft sand yet but will find out in a month at Glamis. I'm told by a jeep duner that they will be great in 4hi. And they are more affordable.

I have run the Goodyear SRA's in sand and they were ok. Now I have BFG MT's and they are much better.

I'm not talking about aired down VS not aired down. I'm just talking about the BEST possible setup for street legal tires in sand. Many sources claim that a regular street tire is the best for sand, and I'm just trying to find some conformation on this. If that were the case, then an aired down street tire is the best tire for sand.

When I first got my Jeep and had the stock 225/75/16 Wrangler ST's they did fine on the Outter Banks of North Carolina without me airing down. I had made the same trip with the same tires in my wife's Liberty without airing down with no problem. Like mentioned above, speed and momentum are the key.
