Warm Camping season has just begun and rather then throwing everything in the back of the jeep I would like to make some organized shelfs that can be removed and such. Since I only have a 2 door I am limited on space. Let's see your setups!!!!
My trailer and Tepui RTT, also some cooking shots.. I love camping off the grid but that is hard to find. However there are some really nice campgrounds here that is basically off the grid.
Fresh corn bread

Different trip:
Fresh corn bread baked over the fire, chicken, onion, green pepper and other ingredients.

Chicken and dumplings, corn bread dressing all cooked over the hot coals...
I pack all my gear in two footlockers which fit perfectly in the driver and passenger seats. Then I fold the rear seat down and blow up a full sized air mattress. Sleeps two very comfortably especially in high desert winds or sub-freezing temps where a tent would be impractical.
cool ideas and pics, I love the teardrop campers too!
I need to get out more and go camping, for now I have a small utility trailer, not great ground clearance, but if I could find a place to camp, lock it up, and explore without, that would be the next best thing.
Interested in everyone's set-up ......opcorn:
Some nice rigs!
I am really liking the Trail Mule, but just a little pricey if you add a car top tent. I checked out their website and there is a dealer close to Fort Worth. I might go by and check one out in person.
Can you haul 4x8 sheets of plywood on the rack? I need to tell my wife how versatile it could be in case I ever have time to get to that honey-do list.
What you see in the picture is the high rack. Used for camping and carrying the canoe. I don't use a high tent. It also comes with a set of low racks that will handle plywood just fine. You can also take the top doors off and haul just about anything you need.
Here is a picture from a day trip we made last month. The doors are folded out and held flat by a couple of chains and it becomes a work place for prepping your food. When done put everything away, close the doors and lock it back up, bear proof.
That's what I want, but it'd be at the weight limit of my 2 door when full.
What options do you have? Is that the rear kitchen model? I looked at both, and like the rear kitchen for cooking outside, but don't like the smaller mattress.
My setup is fairly basic. I have a 4 man Cabelas West Wind tent. I keep 2 Rubbermaid totes packed with all my stuff year-round. That makes it less likely I'll forget something and keeps everything organized in my garage. I have one for cooking/eating gear and one for my sleeping stuff.
I'd love a trailer and an RTT, but the GF keeps saying something about "we have to own a house before you own a $2000 tent". I think her priorities are misplaced but I just smile and agree.
Here is everything all packed and secured on Black Bear pass:
The general set-up when we're out on the trail:
Not really applicable to the 2 door owners, but Coleman makes an SUV air mattress that fits perfectly in the JKU. My GF and I both sleep comfortably in there during the colder months:

I came to the car camping from backpacking world, so my setup tends to be compact and easy to pack (which is great for 2dr jeep):
For two persons trips it usually looks like this
- Marmot Limestone 4p tent
- Self-inflating sleeping pads
- Sleeping bags
- Coleman folding table + couple of simple folding chairs
- Stove (either Jetboil or the bigger one)
- Folding charcoal grill (optional)
- Cooler
- 24" duffle bag with kitchen stuff
- 24" duffle bag with clothes
- Extra bag for my wife's stuff
Like that set up. Haven't been camping in years. We live out in the middle of nowhere. It's quieter than most campground and if I want to sit by the fire and look at the stars, I go out in my back yard. That and the kids entered high school and were just too busy.
We had a travel trailer for a while. What a pain! I want to go camping again, just me and the wife but we looked at small trailers and such. Seems like work and a money pit. I'm kind of like, if I can't fit it in the Jeep, I don't need it. A tent, sleeping stuff, cooking stuff, chairs, food, beer, scotch, cigars and my fly rod. What else do I need...oh yeah, a camp toilet and privacy tent for the wife
I'm trying to maximize my space in my JKUR for a camping trip with 3 adults and 2 dogs. Should be a fun adventure! Lets just say thats quite a few things are bungeed to my roll bars.
I have been thinking about this for a few months. I really like a couple of the teardrop-style off road campers (~$15,000 for a loaded one with HD axles). Then again, I keep getting tempted to buy a full-size truck to either pull a camper or slide one in the bed. If slide-in, I probably can;t buy my favorite truck (Tundra) and would look at the heavy-duty Chevy and Dodge trucks with the bigger V8s. I like the idea of diesels but not sure I want to deal with the emissions complexity and cost of maintenance. So I'm still throwing everything around in my head. Nice to see all these setups...really nice.
Next time this show is in Denver check it out. They have slide in campers for Tacoma sized trucks only weigh 750#. Lots of camping/ hunting stuff. http://www.sportsexpos.com/
Keep in mind also if you go with a slide in, in a truck it's just a matter of time before you're trailering your rig too. I see a lot of guys towing w/ the Tundra and a steel trailer. I see no reason you couldn't have a slide in camper and tow with one, going with an Aluminum trailer could keep the weight down too.
I'm putting a reminder on my calendar now. Thanks Sinister6. A Tacoma would be nice, since it can go a lot of places that are just tough for full-size trucks. They are getting bigger and bigger but still smaller than the full-sizers.
