Let's talk winches.

I see these "good deal" winches like for $254.00 shipped and I know there's no way this thing can be any good. I've been to Harbor Freight and I learned my lesson. There is a reason it's cheap.

So, what are some realistic winches to consider for my JK? I'd like to hear from some of you who have owned and used a winch for a while now, like several years.

The super winches that were 50% off recently are considered among the best, only second to Warn in comparison tests.

Massive Multi-Winch Shootout - Four Wheeler Magazine

I don't think that discount code is a available, although some guys have argued that the fine print stated it was eligible through the month of Dec. so you might have some luck calling and arguing for the discount, that would let you get a very good $500 winch for $250.

The most respectable names in the US for winches are Warn, Superwinch, Ramsey, and Milemarker.

All of these companies are long established manufacturers who provide winches for the commercial market, e.g tow trucks or industrial equipment.

There are differences in quality as you move from the lower to higher priced offerings. Warn gets the most press, Milemarker used to provide the winches for the military HMMWV (H1 Hummer). But these are all reputable brands.

Some are manufactured in the US, some are made in China or other places. But I suspect they all use some parts from China.

Check out the Quadratec line. They have a lifetime mechanical warranty and are priced right.

I just ordered a Warn Zeon 8. I plan on making it fit in the AEV Premium bumper I just bought. Will post pics when complete.

I'd go with Warn. You don't want to think about price if your winch is the only thing between you and not making it home IMHO

Sadly, I don't know of a winch plate or bumper that allows you to run the best winch ever created on a JK. Hopefully someone will start making one someday so the JKs can stop running inferior winches.

Ageless stranger, I have a 8274 on my 12 jk. I bought the rough country bumper mount kit and cut it. Made my own mount for the winch and welded it to there mount. I kinda over built my mount, I used 1/2 inch steel and fitted it with gusset's. I agree best winch ever.

Anyone actually have a winch fail on them? I don't mean snapping a cable, but fry and burn? I haven't, and I've seen a lot of crappy, poorly looked after winches...

Wheeling in northern Michigan, a guy buried a f250 in some think mud. A TJ tied to a tree, and tried winching. After a half minute or so, smoke started poring out of the winch and it locked up. That is the only time I saw a winch fail.

That article bothers the hell out of me. they gave 60 points for ergonomics of the controller. WTF. subtract that column, and the results are very different.

Do the math on that and see where the engo and bulldog end up.

X2 on Superwinch. I have had mine for several years now and it gets a fair amount of use. It hasn't let me down. Love it!

I have had 12000 lb. MileMarker for a couple of years and use it regularly. No problems so far. My thought is to have one that is way over rated and if you know you are going to have a tough pull, use a snatchblock to double the capacity. My 12000 will pull with ease where an 8000 or 9000 will have to strain. And remember, the rating on any winch is the maximum for the first layer on the drum. So as the layers increase, the rating goes down; sometimes quite rapidly.
