Liberty - trail rated?

Passed a liberty on the way to work Friday and noticed a trail-rated badge on the side of it.

Are liberties really trail rated and if so, just how capable are they?!?

First of all, the Jeep trail rated badge is nothing more than a marketing term. That being said the KJ's and KK's are very capable. They don't have the ground clearance or wheel travel of a Wrangler, but the Liberty KK (08 - up) is comparable to a Xterra.

For what it's worth.
Here is jeeps criteria to meet the "Trail Rated" certification.
I feel that "operator ability" has the most impact on Traction and Maneuverability

TRAIL-RATED® CERTIFICATION
Overview
Traction
Ground Clearance
Maneuverability
Articulation
Water Fording

From the original Willys MB to the 2011 Grand Cherokee, the Jeep® brand has been the leader in 4x4 innovation and off-road capability for over 69 years. The proof is in our exclusive Trail Rated standard.

We test Jeep® 4x4s on the toughest trails in the world to prove one thing: They can take whatever you dish out. The Trail Rated® badge means that your Jeep 4x4 has been designed to perform in five categories of off-road conditions: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation, and water fording.

It was seeing a liberty badge that helped my decision to remove mine.

Thats per vehicle class. A compass or liberty's trail rating has lower qualifications than a wrangler does.

I enjoyed my liberty. I had a 2.5" lift and rubicon tj rims and tires. Very capable vehicle (no where near my wrangler though) Biggest limitation on the Libby was the IFS. You were limited to around 2.5" of lift before the angle was too great on the CV joints.

Touche sir! Hard to argue that as a previous owner of 3 CJ-5's. While not always easy to accept, sometimes change is good.

Seems the Trail Rated badge isn't the only similarity between the Liberty and the Wrangler.

Brand new Liberty.. up in smoke

Not knocking it. I actually traded in my 08 Patriot for my Wrangler. It wasn't a 4X though. I got it because I used to drive a lot for work and needed something with good gas mileage. I don't drive much at work anymore so traded it in.

Pretty much when the new car smell wore off on it I started staring at the Wranglers and thinking 'wish I would've gotten that instead...'

He was referring to the Liberty with the CRD. You'll do amything to get in a dig at a JK, even when you don't know what you are talking about, won't you?

Wow, I guess I need to pay more attention. I thought the badge on the liberty said, "MALL-RATED"...

I never understood why people need to make fun of someone else to feel better about themselves. The CJ people laugh at the TJ, who laugh at the JK, who laugh at the JKU, who laugh at the Liberty. It seems to me everyone is driving a "soccer mom" vehicle to someone else, so why all the hate? Seems like a lot of people are projecting their own personal inadequacies.

Most of the time when it comes to the jeep guys whether its a YJ, JK, TJ...etc...the "making fun" is nothing more than a friendly hazing. I knock on a few of guys that I wheel with, and they do the same back...all in good humor though. There is nothing to take seriously, its all fun.

To each their own- we all have different financial/personal situations (i.e. dogs, kids requiring baby seats, daily driver vs off road hobby, etc etc). To me, this is more about the standards associated with the "Trail Rated" designation.

If we could define what exactly "Trail Rated" should mean to Chrysler, what would be the bare minimum to recieve this type of designation?

Solid front axle conversion possibly ?

Compliments of Google:
