Lift and wheel/tire combo

well boys and girls, I am finally in the market for a lift and wheel and tires. I am leaning towards the MB 72 wheels (15x8) and Falken Rocky Mountain (33x12.50). I am seriously considering getting 35x12.50's but I am afraid because of people experiencing drive train problems with a tire that big. I am also leaning towards the TeraFlex 2.5" budget boost lift with shocks.

I am seeking advice from people who have had, have or know someone that's had the lift. what problems, if any you've experienced. I've heard the teraflex stuff is great. I am just shopping around as of now, but plan to make the purchase mid-late next month. Also, I would much rather have the 35" tires than the 33" but if the 35's will cause drivetrain issues I am not interested. I have a 2012 2-door JK. It is NOT my daily driver, but I would like it to still be as reliable as a daily driver. I plan to do minor off-roading. Absolutely love my 2.5" teraflex lift an VS shocks, much less body roll and no sagging yet. High quality stuff and their customer service is great. A lot of people prefer different shocks but I'm content with what I have - depends on if you want to drop a little extra coin.

I run 35" tires with this set-up (3.73 gears on an 11 JKU) and have not had drive train issues, knock on wood. I believe the general rule is you should be okay if you keep the lift below 3" but obviously there are outliers.

Is it absolutely necessary to upgrade diff gears with a 35" tire?

What are you geared at now? Keep in mind that actual tire height is not what is listed. My new 35'" Duratracs measured in at 33.5 actual height installed and aired properly. If not a DD, I would definetely grab the 35s if you are geared right. I like the look better, I like the ability more and the drivetrain should be able to handle it fine especially with only moderate wheeling.

I want to say I'm running 3.73's now but I'm not positive. I have a base JK with the 225 size tires. It already seems like the gearing is sort of low now

You can search, or someone that has it might link it for you, but there is a chart with recommended gearing for the new models and various tire sizes. I have 4.10s, auto, and the heavy 4 door. With the procal changing the shift points this setup is suitable. I think with a 2 door, if you aren't looking for a speedwagon, the 3.73 are within range.

The base jk with 16" wheels comes stock with 3.21 gears. 3.73's are an option.

I want to say that my sticker says I have the 3.73's as an option if I'm not mistaken. I'll have to check tomorrow....

No. I run trails with a buddy that has 35's with a 3.07 rear end on his TJ. He has no problems.

Couple months now with pro comp xtreme ats. I know 33s are the logical choice but going with the 35s was the right decision. It's not unbearable and I would rather do it "right" the first time.

You'll probably want to re-gear no matter which gears you have. The 3.21s will just make you want to do it much sooner.

If you have 3.73's and put on 35" tires, you'll be roughly where a stock JK would be with 3.21s and the smaller 225/75R16 tires. But the added weight and rolling resistance would make it pretty sluggish. If you're going to go to the trouble of regearing, there's no reason to go with anything less than 4.56 or 4.88.

Derf - re: your points concerning stock gearing:

A "true" 35" tire would give something like an effective gearing decrease of (35/32, assuming a true 32" stock tire) 9.4% - which is a bit like going from 4.10 to 3.73 in terms of what your engine will turn at a given speed.

The thing I wanted to point out for the OP is that if he goes to a 4.56 gear ratio from a 3.73 he is increasing his RPM at any given speed by about 22% (30% for the 4.88). So, in effect, he'll net a significant increase in effective gearing and thus his engine rpm at at given speed.

I mention that because some people find that running 2500 rpm plus on the highway to be objectionable. I know it's taboo to mention fuel economy - but that isn't going to do you any favors. Additionally, it means there's a good chance you'll be shifting a lot more around town, if that's a concern.

If you want 35's get 35's. You will not be satisfied with 33's. I have a 3.5" lift and 35's on a 2008 2 door JK. Had the lift for a few years, with 33's. Stepped up to 35's and ran them for about a year on 3.73 gearing. I tolerated it, but I am now with 5.13's. Anyway, your not going to experiance "drivetrain" problems, don't let people scare you, running 35's is totaly fine. I didn't, if you are a manual or not or what gearing you currently have? But the fact you are a 2012 is promising. If you are a manual with 3.73 or 3.21, you can probably tolerate it. An auto with 3.73 will probably be tolerable too. An auto with 3.21, might be pushing it and you might consider a regear or a Superchip Flahspaq, if they are even out for 2012 yet

So I'm curious.....with the 5.13 gearing, can u actually bring the front end off the ground when u smash it?? Lol. Anywho, I'll do the 35's and the teraflex lift. If I don't like how the 35's change the gearing, then ill go with another ratio.

I have squeeled my 35's with my 5.13's

On highway I do about 70 MPH and keeps a constant 2300RPM.
