Lift on Stock Shocks

I'm quite new to the forum but have been trolling quite a bit trying to soak up information.

I've been reading a lot about lift's and am curious what size lift you can do and keep the stock shocks (sport, not Rubicon). I ask because I see a lot of kits, most less than 3" but some up to 3.5", that don't include shocks. I ask because I would think you should replace the shocks at anything over 2" but maybe I'm way off. Thoughts from the pro's?

You've been "lurking" not "trolling". Trolling is when you post something controversial just to cause trouble.

Personally I recommend changing the stock shocks even if you don't put in a lift. I would consider it a necessity if you do. Many kits don't have shocks included because they are trying to stay within a price point. These are often referred to as BB or budget boost.

If you put in a 2/2½" lift (spacers)--

If you don't go off-roading--stock shocks are ok

If you go off-road and do even minor "flexing" and EASY, the stock shocks will "top out" and limit you tires downward travel, it won't hurt them--for a while

Since your jeep is now HIGHER and you COG is higher, you really need some stronger shocks than the stock ones-SO

If you're going to lift your jeep---you really should get some new shocks--DESIGNED for the additional lift, travel

RS/Bilstein/MX--do some "search" for good shocks !!

Kapish ??

I agree completely.

Some BBs use shock extensions. Extra stress on an already inadequate set of dampers.

Think of yourself going down a steep hill. You're smart, in 4-low, going slowly. But there's a little divot and a front tire goes in it, hits a small rock; the nose dives and the rear springs unload ---- with nothing to dampen the effect.
Congrats; you've just started an endo and you're about to roll down the hill on your roof...

Yup, x3. Drop the extra coin on some good, appropriate length shocks to match your lift. You'll be a much, much happier Jeeper.

If dollars are super tight, take-off rubi shocks & extensions are better than the junk the X JK comes with.
