Lifts and welding

I'm still very green at this lift stuff, but I'm learning. Is there a rule of thumb as to when welding will be necessary, ie do all long arm kits require welding? Anything over 3". I don't know how to weld.

are you looking at a specific lift? I have a 4" BDS Short Arm lift that required some welding... Had my local shop install the lift so it wasn't much of an issue.

To be honest, I haven't even found out whether I HAVE a local shop, I thought I might need to do this myself (small town). I've been looking at the 3" Rubi express long arm, and the MetalCloak, which is very interesting.
