I have had a 50" light bar on for over a year now with two pods but got pulled over for the first time today because they were not covered. Apparently they are cracking down on this since they are more popular now. Any suggestions on covers for these that will stay on?
leave it up to a few, to screw it up for most.
I hate to see everyone get lumped in to one category, but it's bound to happen, here I see more and more pickups (honestly no Jeeps) driving on road with their light bars on. I'd rather them pull those guys over, but some of the newer LED's are downright blinding, so something is going to be done in certain areas.
Here in Chantilly VA, I had to put the covers on all my lights that include 50" light bar, dully windshield lights, 10" bumper light and the rear work light in order to pass the state inspection. However, I removed them after the inspection.
The law (varies of course but..) usually is above the hood-line need covers, below don't.
That was the case even before LEDs, just rarely enforced. Now that everyone has LED clusters, and even LED/HID headlight kits, authorities are cracking down because everyone is driving around like they need a 10 million candella helicopter spotlight to navigate in town or on the highway without regard for anyone else out there.
The covers are to ensure they are were never even capable of being on, even before you spotted a cop and may have turned them off (not that you did, just the reasoning).
Hey, I'm leery of all the Suicidal Deer, Moose, and Big Horn Sheep in the Rockies, but when tools are running mis-aligned over-bright (non-DOT) headlights, or their off-road light on the 2-lane highways, it ruins night vision completely (tend to use the corner of my eye when passing to preserve some of it).
I literally just took this pic. People like this will ruin it for everyone. There is no need to drive down the highway with 9876926 lumens to blind other people.

I have seen some people driving around with them turned on and it is ridiculous. Last year no one had them but now I see a lot of Jeeps with them and even more trucks. It is only a fix it ticket so I just have to prove that I covered them for a day so I'll try to rig something to pass that initial inspection
I'm truly not trying to be a smartA here, but I wonder if you can just cover with Painter's tape? So it can be easily peeled off without residue. I guess what I am asking is: have they really defined what a "cover" is?
EDIT: hahaha, it took me a couple seconds. DON'T use painter's tape, then they will surely give you a real ticket for "blue lights" (reserved for emergency vehicles)!
The police out around Anza Borrego (SoCal) routinely hunt for light violations and mirrors.
Lights above the driver's head have to be covered on road and when towing you have to have mirrors capable of seeing around the towed camper. Easy pickings for the cops who bring in hundreds and hundreds of dollars a weekend enforcing these laws.
Found a company on Facebook called light bar covers unlimited that makes covers for lightbars, I sent them a Facebook pm inquiring about the products and they said that their covers that come in many colors go over your lenses using magnets, the pics they had look nice.
Also rigid makes covers but not sure if they fit non rigid led bars and cubes.
I'm unsure if we need covers here in as but am looking for a decent looking covers for my lights also as don't want to give police any reason to stop me.
if so a separate question does anyone know if they are sort of Convex? if they are it might help with the aerodynamics of a 50 or 52" light bar and cut down on the wind noise sort of like the front rounded edge on an airplane wing making the air flow more smoothly around it.
Definitely an insightful thread. I just bought a new to me jku and went to get its first inspection today and got rejected due to the 50"er on top of the windshield. It was already on when I bought the rig but learned my first lesson on off-road vehicle laws. At first I though the laws were just another pita but after reading the thread and seeing the pic of the d-bag with the lights on during the day I'm thinking I'm owing a few of you guys a thanks from saving me from being a d-bag as well.
Gonna look into sourcing a cover for this puppy and only lighting it up when it's appropriate. Besides the cover may be a 2 for 1 solution for my inspection woes as well as that darned whistling.
I bought these in BLACK to cover all my offroad LED's. They come in 6" or 8" so you can find a combination that will cover your light. Be sure to measure the "light area length" a 50" light might only be 48" of LED's.
