I have a buddy who has a stock 2014 4-door Wrangler Sahara Edition.
He's going to Moab with me in June... he's worried his Jeep is going to have problems on some of the trails... the hardest thing we plan on hitting would be Hells Revenge (and we have no problems taking the by-passes when we need to)
Does he have limited slip or electric lockers in his JK?.... Does he need lockers?
I have no idea and really haven't done any research on JK's as I don't own one yet.
Any help would be great...
A Sahara wouldn't have lockers from the factory but it may have a lsd as an option all he would need to do is look at his build sheet.
All Jk's have BLD's (brake lock differentials) as part of the traction control system and make the jeep very capable right off the showroom floor, but for serious rock crawling mechanical lockers would be the best bet but many of the trails can be run as his Jeep is.
He can click on the link below which will take him to Chryslers website then under Your Vehicle click on equipment listing. Simply put the vin# in then click search this will bring up his specific build sheet.
You will need to verify on the purchase printout for that VIN, but generally the Sport/Sahara should come with a LS traction device although my Sport S didnot have one.
The brake lock differential which comes standard should be enough for most of Hells Revenge. I have been doing Moab since the late 90s and that trail can be done with a stock vehicle with proper tire placement.
Does his Sahara have rock rails? If not... that should be something to consider installing before the trip.
Nope, no lockers from the factory in the Sahara.
He needs to check his build sheet to see if he has LSD, or call his Dealer and they can look it up under his Vin Number.
Yeah the Trac-Loc is a LSD not a locker. The electronic lockers are only available on the Rubi's and some rear lockers were available on specialty models such as the Moab, etc.
He is going to add the rock guards before we go. He was pretty worried he'd need Lockers... I was pretty sure he had LSD's but didn't know for sure... he has one of those "Trail Rated" badges but I wanted to check for him...
This will be a first for both of us... I've owned 4x4's forever but this is my first trip to Moab and first time in a jeep so neither one of us know how well our rigs will do.. I have a 95 with ARB Lockers in F/R...
The toughest trail we'll even consider will be Hells Revenge... and with the by-passes, I think we should be ok... neither one of us need to tear up our jeeps first time out and with the wives to boot!
I'll have him pull his VIN to check it out!
Are there tricks to making it climb with LSD's? I mean if the power gets kicked to the wheel with the least traction does he have to ride the brake a bit to get it to trick itself into transferring power to all 4 wheels?
Yeah, well...Jeep will slap those badges on Patriot and Compass too, but I wouldn't take one to Moab. It is there to mainly impress CR-V and RAV4 owners.
But looks like he already has what he needs on his Sahara.
Very nice... sounds like he is set...
I did check and he has running boards... not the same as rock sliders... he'll likely find that out before we get back to Salem Oregon.
When I entered in his vin #... it says he has a Next Gen Dana 30 Solid Front Axel and a Next Gen Dana 44 HD Rear Axel..
also says both axels are "conventional"... I have no idea what that means...
He took it "mudding" yesterday.... says it is an amazing vehicle in the mud... then he spent about $40 at the car wash...
When you live in Oregon...AKA "The Swamp"... it gets wet!
Conventional simply means solid axles and not ifs (independent front suspension) or irs (independent rear suspension).
With the advanced traction control the JK's come with mechanical lockers are seldom needed. I personally would never encounter a situation with my style of off roading where I would need mechanical lockers as the BLD function would be more then adequate. The type of offroading that usually needs a mechanical locker/s is rock crawling and that can beat up a Jeep pretty good so that's not for me.
It is listed under optional equipment on my 2014 Sahara build sheet and called anti-spin differential rear axle.
