Today I received a Mopar Locking Gas Cap. Very nice but it is "tetherless". What do I do about the plastic tether that is attached to the original gas cap (the other end to who knows what)? It came with no instructions.
Yeah, I was a bit disappointed/annoyed when I noticed this as well.
Every time I fill up now, I have to find a place (usually the left side rear bumper) to store the gas cap when filling up. The lockable gas cap doesn't dangle in place anymore.
just to chime in, my 07 had a Mopar locking gas cap, after a couple of years, it was a nightmare unlocking it, to avoid embarrassment at the pump, I would unlock it before I drove into the gas station, nothing like a line of people waiting behind you at Costco and you cannot open your gas cap.
Put the key on a lanyard and put the cap and lanyard where the gas nozzle goes on the pump. So you can't hang up the nozzle without taking your cap, and lanyard stays in your center consul...
I've had a Mopar one on mine for several months now and I still have a hard time trying to jam the key into the slot. This is not the version where you can program the tumbler to match your ignition key, it comes with a pair of small keys. The key hole flap seems to be constructed very shoddily...
I ordered one from Delearship and told i need the one with ignition key to lock/unlock. It was more expensive($100). When it arrived the worker dialed my ignition key to the gas cap cover. It's very solid and works great. I took off the plastic ring holder off and when its off i place it on the tire.
Use some graphite lubricant on your locking gas cap. It makes it work great and won't freeze up in winter. I buy the Stant brand at WalMart for about $15.00
Same here and I just pulled off the tether (It pulls out easily) and stowed it at rear with the original cap.
I just purchased the $24+ one with the extra key as no way was I wasting a $100 on a ignition keyed gas cap. Would rather save the dough and put towards more interesting mods.
I've had my Mopar locking gas cap, the less expensive one with separate keys, on over 5 yrs. with no problems. It works perfect. Once a year I lubricate the lock with powdered graphite.
I installed a fuel door onto the Tank Sahara,I also purchased a Mopar locking fuel cap.
I put the key for the locking cap on a lanyard, when I'm fueling, the lanyard is around my neck and the locking fuel cap hangs from the lanyard off of the key.
The fuel door will go a long way in keeping out crud and water from the locking cap. Though to thoroughly protect the locking cap lock mechanism, from internal condensation build up(and, consequently, freeze up in the winter)I use a high quality hydrophobic oil(an oil that displaces water, and won't let it in or on metal parts).
The oil I use is the same oil I use to lubricate the roller bearings and pivot points on my high end fly fishing reels. Works like a charm only a couple drops needed and the lock is smooth as silk year 'round even in winter thaw and freeze. I have "0" problems with my locking gas caps.

The tether was the first thing to go on our Jeep. Cut it off and used a black plug in the hole. I am not five I don't need strings on my mittens either. I have had our locking Mopar cap on for a couple of years with no problems. Just lube the lock with graphite spray a few times a year.
grizzstang, Some of us have so many fires to put out in our day we don't always think "gas cap, must put back" . Yes some of us have our senior moments, and no I never had strings on my mittens , even when we lived in Michigan...but the lanyard helps find the key and keeps things together. No senior moment at Costco....
Im just curious here, but why do you all feel the need for a locking gas cap? I've been driving Wranglers for over a decade and have never had any issues with just the plain old gas cap that they were born with.
It's a choice. It has nothing to do with someone trying to siphon gas, because that can't be done with a JK anyway because of the check valve. What it might do is prevent a kid, for example, from either stealing the cap and then the dash light goes on, or, putting something down the fill tube which can cause another headache. One less thing to deal with. I never had one on my TJ and I don't have one on my YJ, but on the YJ it's more difficult to mess with. The JK, I decided to add it when it was new along with a Mopar fuel door cover.
