Just chiming in about this bumper. I'm Jesse, this is my Rubicon in the pics. I've gotten so many compliments on the bumper and its really growing on me. I really like the mid width pics posted earlier in the thread and I initially debated on mid versus shorty and went with the shorty.

I chose the shorty bumper for a few reasons: (1) the incredibly light weight (2) the sick good looks (subjective...yes, but this looks great in person as well) and (3) I eventually plan on making my Rubicon more and more capable as the jeep gets older and as funding allows. I think the shorty bumper will look even better when it leaves a clear view of some nasty 37s tucked into the flat fenders!

I'm super happy I did this as the first major mod as I think it will prove to be a solid investment. This bumper is super well built and feels sturdy. I can't wait to take it up to Rausch Creek and do some winching to see how it fares. Weather has been nasty as of late but hopefully in March.

So you can see in the video

the stock bumper stood at 32"

we gained 1/8" by installing the armor lite shorty,

lost 1/2" when we stacked the winch and steel cable on,

with the winch and steel cable, the ride suffers considerably. its not at all like 80 lbs in the truck, when you put it on the bumper, the springs do not compensate well.

We pulled out the steel line and replaced it with synthetic line, and gained back 1/4" of ride height and the ride was FAR better. If you are planning to do a winch with factory springs, and I mean ANY factory springs, you need synthetic line.

I have "14" front springs. If I understand correctly, they will offer a lower front ride height due to a slightly different spring rate than say an "18" or "19" from say a JKU with a tow package.

It would be really interesting to see how different springs up front would affect the changes in ride height. What i"m getting at is that I already have this LOD Armor Lite bumper and a winch with synthetic cable and I've only lost 1/4 inch in ride height. We determined that the bumper, bull bar, and shackle mounts were about the same weight as the stock bumper based on limited ride height change.

It would seem to make sense that with a 18 or 19 spring that is stiffer, that the weight difference (which is minimized) would have even LESS effect on a stiffer front spring? Thoughts? it would be cool to get away with this great looking bumper and have little-to-no change in ride. Stock takeoff springs can be had cheaply....hmmmmm

I have 17's on front and today I pulled the stock front bumper and installed a stubby and I measured my height before removing the stock bumper and then after and it did not change one iota. mine is a 13 jku.

Was it an Armor Lite shorty or another? I guess that supports my thought that a stiffer springed Jeep (I think th e4 doors generally have the stiffer springs) won't show as much front end loss in ride height, especially with a lighter than stock bumper.

my measurement was with the stock bumper in place and then with no bumper at all.

PieFace,

Thanks for the great write up and video. It will help me with the install of my LoD ArmorLite bumper that I am going order with tow tabs so I can pull my Jeep with a Sprinter Motor home. The various parts for the project are starting to arrive.

I am wondering about how the skid plate bolts on. I can imagine how the front side bolts on but where does the lower side connect? Does the skid plate cover the entire area of the plastic air dam or larger? I prefer figuring stuff out in advance as I work better when I have a good idea of what to expect.

What do you think about ordering their fairlead plate? It doesn't appear that you did?

Thanks for your assistance.

we did use their fairlead plate. you can see it in the video. i would buy the winch plate from the people who make the bumper

the skid plate bolts to the bumper and to the cross member in the front of the frame.

there are holes in the skid that should match up with holes in your cross member.

Based on discussion in another thread, I placed 205 pounds on my stock front bumper between the tow hooks. I have 17s in front and the front end dropped 1". Yeah, a whole 1". With an 80 pound winch and wire rope I would be in the 3/8" - 1/2" range. Nothing unusual about that.

I'm sure there are plenty of JKs with the higher springs that will handle an 80 pound combo with minimal sag and little effect on ride.

I had 19s in front, (different truck, the black JKUR in the background in the video). On that truck I installed the engo hidden winch in the factory bumper. (same winch steel cable)

When i drove that truck after the install, with the stronger springs, and no steel bumper, the handling suffered noticably.

if your not changing springs, you need the synthetic line.

"the handling suffered noticeably" is a subjective comment based on your perception, not scientific data. To say all jeep owners will experience the same from the 25 pound difference in weight between steel and synthetic rope is not accurate. Shocks factor into the handling equation too.

While I respect your opinion, others may read your comments as being an unquestionable truth.

watching the video I am thinking the springs are really settled. it looks like the leading edge of the front flare is about 30.5 and mine with 17 springs is over 33" measuring in the same place with 32" tires. I wonder if some of the handling issues were due to this. Like I posted above my ride height did not change one iota with the stock bumper on or off. Still a nice looking set up and I think lighter is better but I think there are other factors at play as well.

My perception of the handling of my JKUR, not the one in the video, with the stiffest or second stiffest level rubion springs(19s or 18s) and jsut the winch with steel cable on the stock bumper made MY truck unfun to drive.

no need to go back and forth on it, people can buy their winch with steel cable, and see how they feel, always can change to synthetic later.

Ya I am looking into a winch next. Just talked to LOD, they said to be on the lookout for Armor Light rear also. Now, time to tackle this LOD rock slider install.

Did they give any hints for an ETA?

No hints. He said just be on the lookout. If that isn't a confirmation I don't know what is. He did say sometime this summer though.

Yup, really like mine too. Rock sliders came out great too Now just need this rear bumper to release so I can get started on the lift. Does this ever end? Might as well ask. ANy recommendations on a 2 to 3 inch lift?
