LOD offroad Armor Lite Bumper Winch Combo

Hey everyone,

we were in the garage again this weekend. And no I didnt paint the truck. This cherry belongs to Jessie, my wranglerforum friend who saved my neck at rausch creek in september. He was looking for the lightest bumper and winch combo, this is what we came up with.

First, Jess didnt want to do a lift yet. His 12 is a rubi and he had 14 springs up front. The moment he told me that, I thought the nose was going to suffer the moment we put weight on it. I had 18 springs in the front, and the factory bumper and as soon as we added the winch weight, I hated the ride. The nose was dragging on the ground, the front springs were always pre-loaded. Handling really suffered.

Jess selected the LOD armor lite bumper advertized to be lighter than the stock bumper without the overrider, and it was.

Here are 2 pics, first is the before picture, obviously. Then the second is the Rubi with the LOD off road armor lite stubby model. The winch is an engo 9000. We changed the cable from steel to synthetic to try to save some weight. (an attempt to save the handling)

The blue tape on the fenders is where we took the measurements of how much the suspension sagged with the extra weight, and then how much lift we got back when we changed to synthetic line. (saved 25 lbs of winch weight)

the bumper

First, the bumper and over rider are very well packed. The plastic is thick, and they sprayed foam into the boxes. They are a production to get out of the packaging, but i wouldnt worry about the powder coat on anything you get from LOD, they definatly pack stuff well.

We did inspect the powder coat job, and it looked good, when you lift the bumper, you think, its steel and its going to be very heavy. But somehow its not. It dosent feel cheap at all. Its very sturdy, there is a system of inner bracing that gives it very good rigidity, but it is lighter than the stock bumper.

Also, there are a number of configurations available. So there are options if you wanted this light bumper but a different set up than the one we used.

We measured the level of the suspension when we made any changes to the weight.

Measurement 1 - Stock

Measurement 2 - with base LOD bumper

Measurement 3 - LOD bumper - Overrider - Engo Winch - Steel Cable

Measurement 4 - LOD Bumper - Overrider - Engo Winch - Synthetic Line

Ofcourse the goal here is a set up that makes the stock suspension suffer as little as possible. The measurements we took were to show how much nose height was lost when we packed the weight on the stock springs.

The first measurement was 32 inches exactly. It was the stock jeep, untouched.

We removed the stock bumper, and replaced it with the LOD armor lite stubby, and measured again. Sure enough...32 inches.

We werent expecting to gain much since the armor lite is not noticably "lighter" than the stock bumper, the goal was just that it wouldnt be heavier. Done.

Here is a picture of the LOD components sitting on the frame rails mocked up. This is not installed, we just sat it there for the weight with without the winch installed.

the stock suspension is good, but once you add weight to it, it folds.

Factory Fog Lights

You can re-use the factory fog lights, but we had to modify them a little. The factory lights on Jessie's jeep have small plastic nubs on the bottoms. We had to razor them off to make them sit flush, once we trimmed them, they sat perfectly in their positions.

Subscribed. I am looking at the LoD Armor Lite mid width non winch with stock suspension. Based on what I read, I don't think I will have an issue with sag. Nice write up!

Thanks for the write-up and looking forward to the stunning conclusion. Already talked with LoD about the Armor Lite mid-width. I need Blue Ox tow tabs welded on which they do for no additional charge. Just waiting for the 2013 to disembark the rail car that is headed to Portland before placing my order.

Does anyone have any pictures of a LoD with the welded on tow tabs?

You will not. The stubby and the overrider together caused zero sag. The marks we had on the fenders were at 32 inches stock, and then we changed to the the LOD bumper and overrider, and there was no change. 32 inches.

There would be no change in the handling of your Jeep, regardless of the number on your springs. You can pick really any configuration of the LOD bumper (theres a bunch of options) and have no negative effects with your suspension or handling.

When you add the winch, (80lbs) you will notice it, to counter this we took out the steel cable and fairlead, and replaced it with synthetic cable and the hause fair lead from engo. It saved us 25 lbs. BIG DIFFERENCE.

The LOD base bumper is 35 lbs. Its under 40lbs with the bar and I think the stock bumper is right at 40llbs

Actual Numbers

Im editing the video right now, with out the overrider, just the LOD bumper replacing the Jeep stock bumper, we GAINED 1/8 inch ride height.

I didnt get a good weight on the stock bumper, but the weight difference is significant enough that truck rides higher with the LOD base bumper.

You guys will see us measure each step when I get the vid done, it should be in the next day or two.

Here's mine... LoD Armor Lite mid-width with bull bar and skid plate. Just added an Engo E10000S-EFP last weekend.

Weights:
Bumper: 34
Bull bar: 12
Skid plate: 11
Winch: 60
Total weight: 117 pounds.

EDIT: Hey Pie, are you sure about the weight on your shorty? Their site has it listed at 31, and it doesn't really make sense that it's heavier than my mid.

(Sorry for the lousy phone pictures)

I didn't have to. I eventually did move it anyway just to make some of the bolts and the fog lights easier to get to, but it wasn't required for the install.

The LOD base shorty is 31 lbs. With the over rider ours was still ligher than stock. (judging by the suspension level)

The JK stock bumper is 40 lbs

we lost about 1/2 inch when we put the winch with steel cable on the stock bumper, then gained back 1/4 when we changed to synthetic line.

The Cherry 2dr belongs to my friend Jessee,

He wrote this for me when he got home after driving the truck for a few hours.


The LOD Armor Lite Shorty Bumper is a base stubby winch bumper for the 2007-2012 Wrangler JK. The bumper is pitched as lighter than the stock unit while offering better style, functionality, and ability to mount any winch with a standard bolt pattern, including the Warn Powerplant and Zeon. We went with the Engo E9000. The bumper is a modular design and made from 1/8 steel plate. We chose to add the Bull Bar vice the stinger, to make the addition of lighting in the future, a breeze. We added the fairlead mount, necessary when mounting a winch. Shackle mounts were a must. Lastly, this bumper offers the ability to utilize the factory fog lamps, which was a nice feature that saves some dough.

The 32 Pound Base Shorty Bumper with factory fog lamp mounts with black powder coat: $499
Bull Bar with Light tabs: $99
Bolt On Skid Plate: $79

Shipping and Packaging

The LOD Bumper, Bull Bar, and Skid Plate were shipped by a reliable major carrier in three separate packages. All packages arrived without notable damage. The first package contained the base bumper, clevis mounts, fair lead mount and hardware. The second box held the bull bar and the third and thinnest package was the bolt on skid plate.
Anyone who has been on jeep forums will have read some story or thread about receiving bumpers with scratches, dents, paint damage, or some other physical atrocity resulting from poor package or shipping. NOT THESE. Our bumpers arrived first wrapped in heavy plastic (my guess…4-6mil) zip tied at both ends, boxed, and surrounded by what appeared to be expanding foam. These things were TIGHT in the boxes. We actually turned the boxes upside down and shook them in attempt to break them free from their bonds, but no luck. The bull bar was packaged in the same manner without a scratch, as was the skid plate. So absolutely no concerns with the shipping, LOD did a top-notch job here.

Bumper and Hardware

We inspected the bumper top to bottom and left to right; back and front and took a few pictures to evidence what we found. The Shorty bumper’s powder coating is flawless; again, zero damage before, or during shipment. Components were straight, well put together, welded well and visually flawless.

The info you have for your mid is correct at 34 pounds and 31 pounds for the shorty. Looks great!

Just an addendum for this. You can purchase an optional light bar with the stinger for $29. The light tabs are built into the bull bar, thus not needed, but for those that want to mount lights without the bull bar there is that option.
